I'd like to post this pic. in Bug Files but need a positive ID first. It's just a common Black fly as far as I'm concerned but needs a proper name to be entered.
These things cause us so much grief up here they need some recognition!!
CLOSED: Black Fly
It looks like a biting midge (no-see-um) from the family Ceratopogonidae. Probably a Culicoides sp.
Close - it's in the Simuliidae:

If we can figure out which of the two common genera this belongs to (Simulium and Prosimulium), threegardeners can put this all-too-common critter's mug shot in bugfiles.
