Holy Cow!! Have you mailed a box today?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

The gas savings was short lived. Hubby paid $3.90 yesterday. LOL

I drive a Suburban (have 6 kids) and just under a quarter tank is $30.

mailed 4 off today at 4.05 each, glad they were bulbs and smaller plants! I mailed one Saturday in a shoebox size, ( I can fit in more than the 9.80 box) that was 6.??, forget the cents, sorry ! Yes these all went priority.

on the topic of gas, I saw on the news that some gas station owners are having to replace parts of the pumps that display the price................. they only go up to 3.999, now they will go up to 9.999. They have to stand by the pumps and figure the difference up and tell the customers how much to pay if it's 4.00 or over.

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

I noticed a station locally that had a sign up to "double" the price displayed on the pump when purchasing diesel because of the same thing - diesel was 4.35 a gallon and their pumps couldn't go that high.

I drive a used suburban - and I recently let it get almost empty (not a smart idea) and it cost 105 for a fill up.............. now I try to fill up at least by half a tank!! Doesn't lower my cost any but it makes me "feel better" when I write the check...... ^_^

But I am sure prices will continue to rise for the summer traveling season..........

I have a 4 cyl S-10 pickemup and pay around $40 to fill up from near empty. Fortunately I only do local driving so it goes 2 weeks. A co-worker has an old suburban and went and bought an old 4 cyl sedan because he refused to gas up every few days.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Yeah, the bicycles are looking better and better these days. Haven't had one in a long time, but geeze... give me a break. I don't know how anyone affords to gas up every week.

Donna

I was next to a guy with a big pickup full of green stuff at the pump the other day; he sighed, as he filled up. I said 'it must really hurt you when you're in business for yourself'. He said - yes, this one costs me $ 400 each week and I have four more.
Two thousand dollars a week just for gas to run a landscaping company... no wonder so many places are going out of business.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Yup, the ripple effect.

Donna

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

It sure is scarey. Everytime I go to the grocery things have gone up. One thing I buy (table spread) has gone from 98 cents a year ago to 1.90 today. I feel so bad for the people that have to drive to work. One of my children had to move to a job closer to home.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Sadly yes...the domino effect...very scary...gas pricing are killing everyone...

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hey I noticed something. If I send a box priority that should be cheaper than the flat rate box i try my best to get a non flat rate box. I got hit by that one monday. Never again.

Dave

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Dave, it all depends on what you are mailing. One pound will go anywhere in the US for the minimum price of $4.95 or whatever it is now. Once you go over a pound, the price changes per mailing zone. If you mail something heavy (like lots those metal plant tags or several plants), it's often cheaper to use a flat rate box. There are three sizes of those now.

I mailed a box of 11 pounds of daylilies last week. Thank goodness they were going to Northern Ohio and only cost $9.75 priority mail. I checked FedEx and UPS and both would have been higher.

You can go online to the USPS website and "order" whatever boxes you want. I keep a variety on hand as I ship a lot of plants. They will deliver them to your house free of charge.

I paid $3.76 for gas yesterday...

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Badseed,
Your gas prices sure seem to be fluctuately back and forth ...... ours only seem to be headed in ONE direction (and it isn't DOWN!)

Genna

Gold Hill, OR(Zone 7a)

Badseed,
I wouldn't mind the price of $3.76 ..... day before yesterday the price here was $3.85, yesterday it went up again to $3.88.
The price here has been changing every 5-7 days .... Whatever happened to changing prices once a month, or when the station gets a delivery? I'm just glad that I don't live in Northern California (close to the Oregon border) ... they are paying over $4.

I haven't been doing as much mailing plants this year .... have to put the extra cash into gas. It sucks when you are on a fixed income!!

DebiV

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I guess gas here is like the weather. Wait ten minutes and it will change. LOL

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

LOL - Sure sounds like it.... the key is to fill up on the drops!! ^_^

Genna

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Whoops Debi. You posted when I did. ;)

We live just outside of a one stoplight town. Down in town, there are only two places to get gas-a Marathon and a First Stop. They run out sometimes more than once a day to check each other's prices and change their own.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Gen:
what are you paying for gas? I am headed to little rock this weekend and I am curious. We are paying 3.59. I said its like the stock market, up and down and from what the news said this am oil toped $130 a barrel its gonna jump again. We have a convienent store chain that controlls the rate as everyone follows their leed.

Well, living in a large city, one of the regular news items is where to get the cheapest gas now days. It's like 3.9? here. Unbelievable. I'll be glad when they actually start producing standard oil independent vehicles.

I remember when I lived in Buffalo, they had a few "green" buses as public transportation. They actually were painted green and they ran off natural gas. This was 10+ years ago. I'm not saying natural gas is the way to go, but at least some cities were thinking of alternative sources. I know that it's been looked at and such since the 70's crunch. Anybody remember the 70's oil gas problem? Same as now... but worse I think. I remember lines and lines of cars for a good while lined up at gas stations.

Donna

Gold Hill, OR(Zone 7a)

I remember the 70's crunch ... you could only get gas on certain days ... if your license plate ended in an even number you could only get gas on even numbered days, odd number on odd number days ... and very, very long lines. If a station ran out, they were closed until the next delivery ... and the oil companies were not making record profits month after month either.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

That is what is bad when they drive around and check prices then adjust accordingly.

Speaking of fixed incomes, we are all on fixed incomes. Our incomes stay pretty much the same whether we are working or retired.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I paid $3.69 yesterday for gas... 13 days ago the same station was $3.56. The 7-11 down the road is up to $3.78... it is going up faster every day.. I saw one station I drive by several times a day go up 3 times in less that 24 hours. It is rediculous! Ok, I will pay it if it really is necessary.. it is those record profits the companies are making that bothers me.

Solsberry, IN(Zone 6a)

Gas was $3.99 here today!

Gold Hill, OR(Zone 7a)

Gas price increases daily again .... Monday $3.85, Tuesday $3.88, Wednesday $3.92 Won't be long and I will catch up to janie1leigh ..... Seems to me that things are getting out of control when you have daily price increases. Can't wait to see what it is going to be today.... ^_^

DebiV

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

There was something that I read ... was interesting. At the rate of increase that we are seeing... it won't be too long before we're paying $10 a gallon.... who is willing to do that? I personally don't think the price will get that high, but it's something to think about... where do you draw the line?

Donna

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Can I get a bike that seats 8? Maybe the Amish will let me rent a horse and school wagon. ;)

Gold Hill, OR(Zone 7a)

They might ^_^

Today gas went up to $3.99 .... ouch!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I lived in Okinawa Japan for a little over a year back in 1988 - 89. They are crammed for space. Driving was horrible. But any how, their cars were small... very small. Some were "micros".... only had 3 cylinders and weren't allowed on the road during typhoon conditions (they had a special license plate). The price for gas for them then is what it is here now. No, I didn't have to pay their price, I went on a US military base and got gas. Which actually was and probably still is much cheaper than it was for most folks back in the states.

Most local people in Okinawa didn't even own a car, much less drive one. There were a lot of scooters around. And most folks wouldn't want to drive there. We're talking major traffic. Crazy driving maneuvers. So my DH asks me where the heck did I learn to drive, I say, Okinawa! The driving is kammakozi. And it's survival of the fittest! My husband at the time (not my DH now) was in the military and stationed there. I worked as an English Conversation teacher. Some of my jobs were like 5 miles away... which is a long way on such a small island. Thing is, it would take me 2 hours to get there. Yes, I could have walked, but at least I had A/C in the car. It was terrible.

I'm just saying it could be a lot worse and is worse in a lot of places.

Donna

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Pughbear 7 - the current gas prices in my area are 3.69 for "regular" but I know that it ranges anywhere from there to 3.89. You might look as you pass thru the Russellville area, sometimes they are a lot cheaper, but the last time I was up that way they were not. In the past couple of years, when I had traveled that way, sometimes they were 20 - 25 cents cheaper. Which is a LOT of difference to me! I was in LR last Saturday and got gas at Sam's for 3.61 with my membership discount, but most other places that I saw in LR ranged from 3.70 to 3.89 per gallon.....of course, the way prices are changing currently, it could be 30 cents more now because prices yesterday aren't relevant, much less last week....... I know oil went up, and with the holiday, I would almost guarantee they raised prices.

Are you headed to Riverfest downtown??

Genna

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Yesterday on my way to work, gas was $4.01. On the way home, it was $4.20. Diesel over $5.

I've stopped shipping/trading unless with a heavy, full flat rate box. Ebay's offering vendors a deal for 15% off final valuation fees if you offer free shipping, but shipping is often more than that on smaller, heavy items that don't cost a lot. More ripple to people who make a little "extra" cash selling things on ebay (as if there is such a think as extra cash these days.)

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

In the fall, after all my kids are back in school, I'm getting a scooter to get around.

Also, I have shipping first class down to the science. Use a lighter box. Those post office boxes are heavy. Use the pasta boxes. You can still put newspaper or popcorn in there to cushion the plants. They usually ship fine for me. Also, if you use the post office box, cut some of the flaps off, that will help with the weight if you are able to ship first class, under 13 oz. Someone sent me their plants in one of those shirt gift box. The box was squished when I got it but the plants were still fine.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

gas is 3.86, and deisel 4.65 at the station next door

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

I have a station down the hill from me. For the past week gas has been $4.09 for regular unleaded and diesel is $4.98 a gallon.
I guess there are places in the states even higher.

Joy

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I think ours is "just" under the $4 mark...give it a day or two...*sniffle, sniffle*

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

The best deal going is to do a large trade and use the $12.00 priority box. No weight limit. You can get a lot in this box.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Better go out and water your money tree...
