Theyre here!!!!!!!
And they're armed.
What is anyone doing for this pest?
I'm about to say to H--- with Green and use chemicals. I don't want to touch the things.
What to do about the beetle
Is that insect porn?
LOL! Never saw that beetle before.
It's the dreaded Red Lily Beetle who will decimate your asiatics. orientals, trumpets ect...like it was a 7 course meal!
Not only true lilies (except daylilies)
Hosta and etc

I left 'green' behind 2 years ago when it comes to those little devils!!
Thank you for that information. Does anyone know whether this beetle will attack a Clivia miniata? I like to set mine outside during the summer. I'll be on the lookout in my region, and make sure my gardening neighbor know about the pest, too.
Try contacting your local extension office, Jo Ann, and see if they can recommend something that actually works but is easier on the good bugs, etc.
Good idea,I am using SEVAN powder as an interrum remidy.
Might have to go to Bonide.
Neem oil works...
That was recomended in the Mass.U. article, I'll try to get some at nursery here.
(wiping coffee off the screen)
I cant help noticing the irony.
We are "growers" we encourage small plants to become big ones, and make special soil to insure the plants have everything they need.
We also kill things in a most savage way.
I would microwave them too except I couldn't stand it to touch them.
No no no...you don't want to have to clean the micro, grabbing and crushing on a rock is very satisfying. They make a lovely crunch sound under foot. :)
oh, I love the idea of microwaving them.... lol.... if we add japanese beatles it would be great.... red and green... just like xtmas....
lol.... I killed 2 already...
Two JB's, Kassia? I haven't seen any yet and don't expect any until early July.
been killing red beetles since mid-April. I have to grab and squish, they are very fast.
Kassia, hopefully not JB's?! Because if they are in your yard, they are probably in mine!
EEK!
2 words!! Beneficial Nematodes!!!! Started several years ago with awesome sucess including no fleas on my cats!!!! Which reminds me, I need to order this years supply......................
bseddon - off topic (sorry everyone):
I was born in Pittsfield.
What nematodes?
My daughter is a nut on the subject.
Later on, be sure to scrape off the black blobs on the under side of leaves too. Use a knife-the larvae hide under their own poop.
Does anyone know how they overwinter? Should we be burning the stalks at the end of the season?
Thanks put it in "my favorits"
Get a little scent from the female on a Q-Tip. Place in front of male. When male mounts drop the sucker into a cup of oil. When all the males are caught the horny females will fight each other to death. ]:o)
Dwaine, you are too funny! I can almost envision all those females biting each others' antennae off!
I'm trying not to think about what else they could do! If they're like junior high students, it could be really ugly.
Might show up on YouTube.
Oh my you guys are so freaking funny. I swear DH thought I was nuts when I told him that you guys were plotting ways to get rid of those buggers.
You know my dad told me to use SEVAN last year when they first came out. I must have a crazy strain of them because the dust didnt stop them from feasting on my lilies. They just now coming up and I am dreading their apperance.
The news of them liking hostas too has me concerned since I have a ton of them in my yard.
Luckily they are not a problem here yet. I have enough others.
You mean they weren't just tail gaiting?
No it was a much slower gaiting according to my notes. There was no stale beer odor or cans under the shrubs, no sandwiches and no football boast slickers.
Hee, hee, hee! Their loss!
Dwain the female fights sounds suspitiously like you've "been there"
Nature's wonders are sometimes amazingly similar to wonders found higher on the food chain.
Hmmmm.... who knew we had so much in common with beetles! at least we weren't liked to stink bugs!
or the dung beetle.
Ha, ha! Now we're getting silly!
PLEASE consider using and recommending Neem instead of Sevin at all times !!!!!!!!
"The insecticides carbaryl (Sevin) and malathion are effective on adults and larvae. However, carbaryl is highly toxic to bees and malathion is also toxic to many non-target insects. "
The bees are having a hard enough time as it is. I have been able to control the lily beetles this year by being very diligent hand picking them as soon as I see them...must have squished a hundred easy. I take a mason jar and fill it with soapy water and drop the larva in as soon as I see those slimey punks! Yuck, hopefully will not see too many of them this year.
