Just about the best time of year for michigan wildflowers.
The yellow lady slippers are blooming. Bear with me, we don't see these too often and are a treat here.
Early Michigan Wildflowers
Just a comment.
We had lots of company this weekend. One of our guests is my little great nephew who is 3 1/2. He is around adults all the time and speaks very grown up.
Last year he enjoyed walking in the woods, eating wintergreen berries, picking ferns and looking at the jack in the pulpits. He would gently lift the top and say "hi" to jack.
Well, this year we were at our cook out and I asked him if he remembered coming to our woods before (last memorial day, at age 2 1/2) he said he did. Then he asked if he could see the "puppets"
I wasn't sure what he was talking about. Then he said "the puppets in the swamp".
He meant the jack in the pulpits! I thought it was very cute and wanted to share his love for the flower. (he did get to see some "jack is the puppet"!
Out of kids' mouths come the cutist things.
It's ground pine. Here's a link to the USDA page, http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=LYDE

Gay Lynn,
I had the same stuff and and didn't know if it was a fern or moss so I put it on the fern forum. Mine are called club moss. There are different types and they are all protected and signs of a good undisturbed woods.
There are types that are little clumps like yours, and ones that are singles. I have at least 3 different types. The first picture on this link is the single type. But there is a picture like yours if you scroll down.

Thanks Kathleen and cpartschick. These are growing all over the place at our cabin in the Northwoods. I knew I would find an answer on DG.
