Cardiocrinum giganteum

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

I have 2 pacific dogwoods right now, one is showing varigated leaves, which I did not know it had.

I think I am going to need more than a rootable cutting of the plant for where I would put it. I am trying to get a plant which will keep the dogs out of one corner of my yard.

What I have aren't cuttings - they have roots and have been growing for a couple of months now. They were just bare root when I got them.

Congrats on the pacific dogwoods - I haven't seen anything with variegation.

FYI, I also have the red elderberry, which is quite pretty. I don't know how it transplants, though.

A few more species, huh? Would this do?

OMG, Sue. Is that in your yard? What a great (if not a little scary) picture. Although I wouldn't want it to become a habit for him or her . . .

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Yep, He (she?) showed up this weekend. I think I may have seen her/him once before in the general area, but I haven't seen him this close since. I think it's a juvenile Cooper's Hawk-the Sharp-shinned don't like perching on poles, whereas the Cooper's will do so comfortably. I don't know how long he'd been perched there when I looked out the window and spotted him, but he was there easily another 5-10 more minutes before he left.

Yeah, my usual assortment of regular feeder visitors were nowhere to be found-or heard-for a while after this. No chirping to be heard anywhere.

We had a merlin which broke its wing in our yard. I assume it was out hunting the starlings or chickadees in our yard. We took it very quickly to the PAWS Wildlife Center, but it ended up dying from the fracture. :-(

The picture of the hawk was quite weird on my eyes, I could not get oriented with it, and did not see the bird until it was brought to light in another post.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I took it through the window at a bit of an angle. Some of the other shots were very pixilated-I think they also had the window screen in them. We need to get a newer camera, but that's on hold for a while.

That's very sad about the Merlin.

Sue - did you post in the bird-watching forum? I haven't been over there laterly, but I imagine that this would provoke some interesting conversation about hawk behavior . . .

Just checked on this thread and saw Analog's post about the merlin. So sad! They are such beautiful birds. My mom recently had a Peregrine falcon at her bird feeder!! The birds scattered, of course, but how thrilling is that??

So my Cardiocrinum finally bloomed. It turned out much smaller than I wanted/anticipated. I'm not sure if I'm more frustrated that it didn't turn out to be bigger or that I look fat in this pic.

AW! you both look okay to me.

You look great! Wonder why the lily didn't get larger? That's strange. It's pretty anyway, though.

The C. g. that I picked up back in May with 2 leaves, has not appeared to have grown since I got it. I am wondering if I should do to spur its growth, or does it take a while for a transplanted Cardiocrinum take awhile to get going?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

well, I don't know about others, but mine don't get all that large the years that they don't bloom. When they decide to bloom..... the leap!

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

growin, I had 3 bloom this year. 2 were about my height 6ft, and the other is 7ft. they are in light shade. one dropped it's flowers a few days after they opened up. the others are fine. so I don't know what was lacking for the one. I did let the area get dry. and watered after it happened. Analog Dog your C should be putting on new growth. so it can get enough energy to bloom in the next year or two. I add a lot of organic matter to them early on. and not much fertilizer. I lost one last year do to lack of water. it was in a spot that the sprinklers did hit. so I have to hand water it. I've had that happen to some bulbs, and some ferns. in general. that I bought at garden shows. thay seem to never break dormancy. and just sit there with a few leaves and finally die. Arisaema, Trillium, Pyrrosia, are some. Jim

Hey Growin' ~ You don't look fat at all. As a matter of fact, there's an entire segment of your body missing from your waist to your knees!!! ^_^

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I guess I'm a bit disappointed I got a shortie. I watered it regularly, fertilized it, had it in black organic soil under the Viburnum. It only got early morning sun. The neighbours gave me a bag of seed so I'll spread that everywhere and see what happens. I do know this plant, before I got it, was neglected. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Baggie pants can make a difference. It's the bulge above that I didn't think was so obvious. If I wasn't so busy and pre-occupied with plants, I'd be worried about my looks like the rest of my neighbourhood.

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

I planted it in a spot at the NE corner of my house that gets part-sun, and its also on the dry side of the house, so I am guessing that I want to water more. The plant was dug into mineral soil, but I have composted over and around the plant, both before and after planting it.

So is my only job watering it more? Or should I dig it up and get it more orgainic soil around it?

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I mentioned the size of my plant to a neighbour who has had the same thing happen to his. Last year they were much taller. Maybe it had something to do with the lousy spring weather.

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

growin, we had an awful cold spring and summer was late, I can imagine yours was as bad or worse. I wouldn't worry about it. about my experience with Cardio. seeds, I finally got some cardiocrinum seeds to germinate after 2 years of trying this spring, they were in a spot that gets pretty dry, and I forgot to water them. so now I have to start over. this time I'll sow them in a better spot. very frustrating, considering it takes about 7 years to flower from seed. and at my age I'm not buying green bananas. good luck too you, Jim

The cardiocrinum I got this year isn't looking like it's doing anything, either. I think the soil is really good, plenty of maple leaves that are composted in, plus dairy compost. And I keep it watered. It's right by some plants that wilt at the slightest hint of dryness. But I'm wondering the same as analogdog. Do they take awhile to get settled?

I put in some tall white trumpet lilies this year and they are getting ready to bloom. They are all of 2 1/2 feet tall. I do not get it! Some of my other lilies are really small this year, too.

Growin', can we not refer to that part of the body that is between the legs and the neck? I like to completely ignore than whenever possible. Thanks: )

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

My cardiocrinum didn't do much for the past few years. It just grew a few leaves every year and sat there. Jim - too funny. I have a large bag of seed and I'll distribute the seeds around the yard and just see what happens. Maybe they'll like one spot more than another. I'll see.

Pixy - "stomach/spare tire/tummy"? lol.

Yikes! LOL!
