This is a long shot

This is a long shot but since you can find more plants in Ca than here in Arizona, have any of you heard of this tree or seen it in a local nursery? Myself and one other Arizonian would be eternally grateful .

Brongniartia alamosana also known as Vara Prieta also known as Palo Piojo , Here is a link to it:

I haven't seen it, but I'll keep an eye out.

Marie-
looks like it is on a campus there in your state? Could you just "visit" the campus in the fall, and collect a few seeds?

hiya marie,

I know you're looking for bigger specimens, but with a little sanding of the seed hull or a soaking in hot water for a few hours, you'll get germination very quickly. The great thing about beans/peas (Fabaceae/Leguminoaceae) is that once the hard seed coat is softened germination and emergence happen very quickly and you'll often end up with a plant that grows faster than one that you'll find in a pot since the primary or tap root isn't disturbed. Members of this family are frequently slowed down during and after transplanting. A seed-grown plant that is germinated in a deep pot will soon outperform any larger specimens grown in relatively shallow commercial nursery cans. It is also good to remember that often plants of this family will just send out a tap root and end up finding their way out of the drainage holes in commercial nursery cans and root into the surrounding soil. This often results in mortal injury to the plant when the pot is disturbed or moved as the primary root is cut or exposed.

If you've got any spare seed I'll gladly germinated them for you or if you bring some to the roundup I can help you speed up your germination with a couple of tricks I've learned as Pam is a big fan of this plant family and we have many specimens in our collection.

best to you

Marie-
send me some seeds, and I'll grow some for ya (*wink)

Marie - any luck getting the seeds to germinate? I have two Grong's in the ground and they are doing pretty good, even in this heat.
I placed the seeds in a tupperware container wrapped in a moist paper towel and once a root emerged I stuck the seeds in the ground.
Good luck with the seeds. And if you dont have any luck with them I just might have an extra sitting in a kegger cup.
