Hi Laurel. Welcome. The orchid holder sounds neat too.
Cottage Garden Trellis designs
Laurel, love your arbor and it looks like the birds do too! it is so creative and seems like it could be in a magazine! I would send your photo with a little write up about it to Birds and Blooms they may publish it :) What do you have growing on it this year?
http://www.birdsandblooms.com/
ROFL, Laurel, maybe I shouldn't have used those terms in an election year!
Can we see a pic of the orchid holders?
Nannie, thanks for the welcome
Wind, that is so flattering! Thanks. Cardinal flowers have reseeded at the entry and I planted black eyed Susan vine on the fence line. The yellow rose should bloom for a lot of the summer. The rose was going and blowing last summer until the canine power auger/aka Goober dug it up and danced it around the yard.
Pagancat, we have left the Age of Aquarius and are in the Age of PCness, fo' sure.
So at the risk of de-railing your thread Wind, here is a picture of the pot holders. They spent the Winter inside.
Laurel
Laurel, that is TOO cute =) I'll be sure and give you credit when I copy you, k?
Since we're a bit off the track, let me jump in and show you something some of the "Mixed Seeds and Nuts" where I hang out alot have been doing. This was found in the Garden Gate magazine, which there are free instructions. You can also view this magazine online. (Another PC benefit)
this is the herb version:

4 graduated pots, one piece of rebar and your plants of choice. the possibilities are endless
nannie, and anyone who likes that look of the whimsical staggered pots in the links above, there is a co-op (interest) going on now for those type of plant stands :) I noticed them the other night, I'm tempted too. I got introduced to the DG co-op thread recently from Shirley1md on the Longwood Garden trip. I ordered some tulip bulbs and other bulbs for the fall and I couldn't believe how great the prices were.

also, I do think I'm going to order those hooks that hook into the house siding :)
. . . and they all grew happily ever after!
Wind-I am glad you found the co-op forum-you will really like my next one!!;)
Nan-And I love the tippy pot thingines-think I will try it with the rebar-that is like $1 per peice and that is WAY cheaper than the pther things-I have a TON of coleus that I would love to put in them!!
Laurel-can you come over to my house and bring your DH too!!! I love the planters and the fence and the arbor-I love it all!! WoW!!! I really want one of it all now!!LOL Welcome to DG!! It is one of the most wonderful places on earth(right next to disneyland!!)
Pagan-yeh-that is the goal-in a couple of years to have the netting dsappear and have it covered in clematis-DH refused to attach anything to the house, so I had to get creative!!
I'll admit, it makes me nervous as well. But not as nervous as it makes me to have some of the vines on the brick... I know some are damaging and have seen them lift fascia off of houses and get into attics and stuff.... don't mention that part to your DH!
fairy, I can see it because I was looking for it since you mentioned it :)
...what kind of netting is it? and how did you attach it at the top?
today here is HOT HOT HOT, our first heat wave has arrived, just when my ws violas are finally blooming!!!!!!
It is deer netting-it was like $12 for a gimongo roll of which we only used about 1/8 of!!LOL I thought it would take more!! We attched it in the ground using garden staples and we took it just up over the gutters-there are like rods in the gutters I guess attaching them to the house-so we zip tied it to those rods...alll together w/ staples, zip ties and the netting we actually used about $3 worth of stuff-the netting isn't super noticable and once all the clematis get to height, you won't even be able to see it!!
You guys have such great ideas and thanks for posting all the nice pics. I love the Faux Bois work at the Huntington Gardens. I wish I had more room and a strong helper, I'd for sure have something like that on my property!
I usually hang out on the Florida Gardening forum, I hope you all don't mind my jumping in here with a couple of pics of a project my DS just finished for me.
First is west side gate pergola. It is 16 feet long on top of a 6 foot high fence. That fence hides my work area and shed from the main part of the yard.
Not planted yet, it was just finished. I have a Podranea ricasoliana vine I am going to plant there this week.
Next is the east gate. This is a 12 foot area that shows from the street. I have Rangoon Creeper there already. It is just now growing to reach the top. It is also about to bloom.
You can't see it, but on the right side I have a little Snail vine...the fragrant one...a Vigna that will take care of the right side fence and reach a bit of the Pergola.
On the North west side of the house there is a small section of fence and another gate ...only 8 feet wide there. He will get that one done sometime this year...I have alot to do over there first.
All in all the materials were $120.00 for both gate pergolas. That's 28 feet at just a little over $4.50 a running foot. There's a bit of wood left over for the 8 foot section.
The labor was cheap with my Mom discount...lol! I have no idea how much it would be to hire it out.
Not as pretty as the pics you guys showed, but it is tropical city here and hard to get that real cottage look. I envy you guys!
That looks great Shellabella. Lucky you with a handy DS and a Mom discount :)! I have to rely on the whims of Mother Nature to bring down the trees or put up saplings in the wrong place. Here is a photo of the veggie garden stick fences and loops made with lashed saplings. Christmas beans are starting to run. We dry them in late Fall as they hang from the loops. I have moonflowers growing on other loops that I'll photo later in the season.
Fairy, I'd love to come visit but DH's "Honey Do" list is ever so long :). Regarding the netting, I grow Carolina Jesamine covering a garage wall on three fanned airplane wires that are eye bolted to the soffit rafters at the top and wired around rebar driven into the ground at the bottom. Keeps it off the wall and makes a completely invisible trellis.
Mmm - just googled/ Plant Filed the Podranea ricasoliana - looks like it does fabulously in your area (but not in mine....*sigh*).
Do you offer gift certificates for your Mom discount? No? I wouldn't blame you, sounds like you have a terrific DS and you'll have a lovely fence in no time!
My mom just ordered me 4 more clematis to finish the wall, so it should be covered in no time!!
These pictures are so inspiring! Can roses and/or clematis be grown on a wall that faces due north?
Depends on how much sun it gets-it is all about the light requirements and providing it something to grab onto...
It is very bright, but the sun doesn't shine directly on the front until afternoon and evening, probably the least desirable conditions. There are other places I can put roses and clematis, but they would look so lovely there against the stone. I just got two clematis from Bluestone Perennials--Guernsey Cream and Josephine, that I transplanted into larger pots, to plant in the ground in the fall. This is my first clematis in many a year, since they positively pooped in Orlando. Roses, I'll take anyone of those climbers. They are just exquisite.
I like to think in %-does it get sun at least 75% of the day-that is what ya need...
Hello everyone, I alway's come into the cottage garden area to look at all of your wonderful postings and get ideas. I can't say that I will ever have that cottage feel to my gardens but I keep trying to just do what I can to get it as close as I can. Here is a picture that I thought I would share. This was the kid's trampoline they are grown now and we were going to just pitch it. We had actually torn it down and it was just laying in a heap waiting to move the trailer around to load it. I got to looking and moving pieces around and the waa laa.... !! Hubby and I kinda put it back together and then had to find a place to put it... I just love it now!! I don't really know if has enough of a cottage look that some of you have, but anyway. It's an idea!
That is such a good idea and it looks great!
That is very lovely!
Wait until it is cover by climbers!! What did you plant by it?
There is a climber rose called New Dawn that is very popular amongst english cottage gardeners. It would look great climbing through your new arch, mixed with some clematis.
You can hang little crystal mobiles to shine in the sun.
You can have a little bird's nest on the side.
Polyacre -
That's great. I have a friend over the PNW Forum who did exactly the same thing.
Wishing now that I had an old trampoline . . .
That's wonderful - it takes a imaginative eye to see an object in a totally different use. Good job!
I love the different interpretations of "trellis". One person's trash is another ones trellis?lol
Laurel
What a great idea!
You are going to have fun with it for sure!
Repurposing is the "new" way to go!!
Thanks everyone,
Spider----I have morning glories planted on both side of it now. But not sure I really like the look of them as they just dont stand out enough for me. So looking for something else. I will check out the New Dawn rose. Hopefully it grows in my zone.
Crystal mobiles and bird's nest !! What a great idea !!
Katie---What is the PNW forum.. I would love to see another one !!
I was thinking of painting it white next spring befor anything climbs on it.
Mmm - if it's metal I don't know if I'd bother - won't it just peel off in a few years?
You just need the right Morning Glories - the volunteer I got this year was just a stunning blue...
New Dawn rose would be a wonderful background for morning glories. It has a very light pastel pink milky colour and the rose would look great next to vibrant coloured morning glories.
When my borther in law died I went to the rose forum and asked if anyone was selling vintage rose plants to plant in a little border I made for him. I got two. You can always go ther and aks for ideas for your trellis.:o)
The PNW is the Pacific Northwest Forum here:http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/region_pnw/all/
Here's NWGordon's trampoline trellis picture in the thread called Plant Swap. He has some great beds, too. One with an old bathtub that he's painted red. He wants to do the whole bathroom in that bed once he finds the other fixtures.

Wind, I'm glad you didn't take these pictures away. I came back to look at them, everyone a delight. Next year is trellis and vine year for me even if I have to make a trellis out of found objects.
I would say that's even the best kind!
