seeds on prairie spider wort

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Can any of you tell me where to find the seeds on a praire spiderwort? I've been to the seed and seedling site everyone uses and have surfed arount trying to find the seeds. All I find of course is the plants.

It's the tradescantia occidentalis. They grow wild here but wanted to collect some seeds.

If its like other things in its family (Commelinaceae) the flowers bend down when making a pod that will form up to 3 seeds inside. One thing that make it difficult to collect seed from some of these plants is that the pod ripens and opens rather suddenly, expelling the seed, leaving behind something that looks like a three armed star. Try looking under the cluster of flowers, feel the pods as they swell, and pick a few of the largest and place them in a container where they can dry and the seeds won't escape if they expel the seed while drying. Tradescantias are also easy to prop from cuttings, including the hardy ones.
Good luck.

Thanks, don't have a lot of experience with cuttings, except the ones I can root in water!!!

At least now I know where to look,

Hi! Sorry so late in replying to your post- but I have many of these on my property and it is one of the few wildflowers I have actually had success in transplanting. You might try it too- I took some plants from an adjacent slope and put them into my rock garden in late June, and I have already had a second bloom and tons of new growth!

I also have seeds too, but I am a real newbie at this so I have no idea how many would be customary of a wildflower like this. If anyone can let me know I would be very appreciative!
I would go take a photo of them but it's raining here! Yippee!

There are tons of them growing wild not too far from me and I dug some last year, but didn't wait till they were dormant. (Thought they were some kind of grass, till they started to bloom) They just bloomed once. Do I need to transplant after they bloom or before? The ones I transplanted did well for a while, but then I'm afraid I got lazy and let that bed get taken over by weeds. Don't you think they'll come back next year? Now they are in the same environment they were growing in.
