Is this a Bromeliad? IF so could you name it?

Orlando, FL

I posted asking about this plant in my yard in another place. Someone thought it may be a bromeliad and suggested I come over here and ask. So here I am. This is in my front yard by the gate...been there 5 years that I know of. It has never bloomed for me. First on got this bright orangish pink in center and then it got the bloom. Now the other one is doing the same thing. I realized I may be able after all these years to find out what it is. I will add two pictures one of plant and one a close up of flower. I would be grateful for any help I can get. Thanks

Here is a picture of the flower. It is odd and beautiful. The flowers are a burgundy red color and creamy white.

Definitely in the Bromelia genus. Bromelia pinguin tends to be the one you see the most; check the internet for pictures and see if that looks like your plant. Try going to www.fcbs.org and browse through the picture index.

Oh wow...I need to look more. Three of them look similar to me. So I am going to have to look into it some more. But definately looking in the right area now. It is Bromelia. I have several kinds and do not know the name of any of them. This one is so large I never thought once it could be a Bromeliad. IT had some kind of fruit on it last year. I wish I had a picture of that now. SO many of them get fruits? Are they edible? SO much to go learn. Thanks Melanie

The only edible bromeliad I know of is the pineapple, but maybe someone else on here knows more.

I recently harvested some berries from Aechmea recurvata red. When I squeezed the berries to get the seeds I noticed how sticky the juice was. I tried the juice, it was very sweet.

I love the thought of edibles in the yard. I have 6 pineapple plants and want to start some more. I am going to be looking into more info on my Bromeliad, I an still surprised at it being one. But very excited too.

Thanks for the infor

You don't mention the very sharp thorns that are on the leaves they have a curve to them i have them in my yard too the spread and become very thick.no one can walk through them for sure. At first I thought they were pineapples but trust me there not.
