Before and After

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

I thought it might be fun to photo record some of the changes going on in the garden during this season. Pix taken from the same vantage point or of the same border or patch. To kick it off, here is my little veggie/cutting patch. The first pix taken the first week in April, the second taken yesterday.

Would love to see others through the season...might be fun!

PS: I hope the DG crop works for this long horizontal!

Nice, Daisy - and good idea. How do you keep the critters out of the veggies?

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

There are buildings on 2 sides (shed and barn) and a fence all around the rest of it, and so far, Bambi hasn't seen any need to jump the fence, what with all of the other delicacies I provide elsewhere on the property and all. Somebody told me the deer won't jump into something so small and enclosed.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What about rabbits and others?

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Knock wood, so far, so good, and I can't imagine why with all of the bunnies and woodchuck we have. I am going to take some of the invisible deer fencing that you talked about and wrap the outside of the fencing with it., but just up to height of the fence for the little critters. And I keep saying I'm going to dig chicken wire down a foot or so along the periphery, but so far, I've been too lazy. I guess it'll take a midnight rabbit attack to get me going in that way.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, they might bite through the plastic. Chicken wire is the recommended way to go.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I too think this is a good idea. Here's one from me. This area is always a work in progress. The grass did well last spring and then went down hill from there. Another reason why I feel grass is for garden paths...

Here's another shot - I'm still working on the path, but you get the idea.

Yes, it's tough for grass to do well under those large trees.

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

That's a pretty walkway. One of the things I'm trying to get started in places where the grass won't grow is moss. I wonder if that would work for you in that area?

Planted 7 Colorado Spruce and 2 Silver Maple trees. Sorry did not take pics but will get them tomorrow, as there is none of that Nasty Days of Rain.

Silver and blue.

Yes and now the colors will come in. JM, dogwood etc etc.

Sounds like a plan!

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Guys, those yards are looking pretty good to me! Clem

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Great job, you two.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I thought I would revitalize this thread. I plan on taking a few pictures once there's less harsh midday sun. Anyone have updates on their yards?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I'll have to look at my photo stash and see what I have. That should be an interesting project!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Here's the update on the front. Excuse the mess. I'm trying to teach the squirrels manners, but they are not too quick in catching on...

TODAY THE GARDEN

Very nice... I envy all your full sun garden space!

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh I'm green w/ jealousy! I want that little backhoe you have- I imagine I could get into LOTS of trouble w/ that!

Your garden is beautiful. It reminds me of the soft drink commercial that's out- where the lady goes out to her beautiful garden to find everything eaten by bunnies, then goes indoors to discover the bunnies have taken the soda in the fridge. I've screamed like that often!

Southeastern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow, Sherrie, those are great before & afters. I'd like to see the deck when those mg open up. Your garden is beautiful and looks like a manageable size.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have a question about geletin stuff that came with plants.
Looks like clear jello particles.
Do they go into the ground with the plants or do I rinse them off.

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, that stuff is GREAT!!! Keep it; don't wash it off. I bought 40 lbs this year. It is "Soil Moist" or other brand name hydro-crystals. They absorb water and make for much less watering. It will break down into the soil w/ time.
This was the first year I purchased wholesale amounts and worked it into the soil of my annual beds to keep the seeds evenly moist (not wet). I would not have been able to grow a whole garden of from-seed annuals w/o that stuff!
It works re-seeding lawns, too. Um, you have to be careful how much you use, though- you might inadvertently turn a lawn into a slippery swamp. Not like I would ever do something that dumb ;0)

Dumb you have not even come close to dumb as, I have been dumb - serious. The mini excavator - I have driven it but I have not put the levers to work digging or smoothing out ground.

If I can drive a dump truck I should be able to drive that. Give me this summer and then we will see what I can do with it.

The veggie garden is managable. Weed 1 row a day.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks there isn't much as far as crystles go. The plants came with it in the root soil.

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

Speaking of dumb, a guy on the next street blew his house up w/ a mini-excavator. He didn't call the utilities; went to dig his garden bed and hit the gas main. He luckily managed to get his mother out of the house in time b/f the biggest explosion I ever heard! His house was absolutely gone- vaporized. The news crews arrived, but there wasn't anything to film! Just debris in the trees...
It's expensive, but I'll take oil heat, thanks.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - scary! Good thing no one was hurt. Talk about before and after!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Yikes!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

What a dope! He's lucky no one was killed.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's so scarey! I'm so thankful no one was killed or injured! My goodness!!
