Grafting Supplies

Pineville, LA(Zone 8b)

Where do you purchase your tree grafting supplies?

Thanks

I buy from a nursery about 180 miles from my house. I go to that town once in a while so it's not a big deal.
I heard that www.mellingers.com was pretty good for grafting supplies NOT live plants. I have their catalog and they sure do seem to have a pretty good selection.

Hi Grits. In TN it's Farmers Co-0p, they have grafting wax, etc. Or you can make your own stuff. What's your favorite graft?

Pineville, LA(Zone 8b)

DH is the master gardener here - he has really been successful with his pear trees. He grafted a large, sweet and juicy eating pear to one that is known here as a canning pear - kinda small and very hard. Talk about great pears!!! I don't know the names of them, forgive the "dumbs". But the new fruit is fantastic for eating or canning.

He wants to graft another pear tree to one that he is "threatening" with one more year of life! lol

We can't find any supplies here, just need a place to order them.

Thanks, Grits

Try www.bearcreeknursery.com
If their site isn't fully operational, you can request a catalog. They are a great source for root stocks, scions, and trees--as well as supplies for home grafters. I have been very happy with them.

Thanks Scott! Is the grafting wax just bees wax?

No. I bought a grafting collection that included a knife, special rubber strips and this grafting paste (reddish, smooth stuff--don't recall the brand name) I know Bear creek sells it separately

You might also try A.M. Leonard. http://www.amleo.com/ They have a nice selection for the professional, and they do carry smaller quantities for a larger home gardener.

I really liked AM Leonard's prices - ordered form them. Thank to all for your info,

What did you buy from AML Grits?...and what great grafting projects are you planning?

Pineville, LA(Zone 8b)

Hi Scott: Bought the wax and tape. DH is going to graft a soft eating pear to a hard canning pear. He did one several years ago, and the new pear is really great for cooking or eating.

Mmmm--now I'm hungry for pears! Sounds like a new variety--"Grits Favorite", better than Clapps Favorite!
Thanks Sunflower for recommending AM Leonard.I sent for their catalog.
I visited the Seed Savers Orchard last summer--over 700 different varieties of apples. I wanted to go home and start grafting my own orchard! I have successfully whip grafted one apple tree and would like to get better at it. Anyone have experience with bud grafting or with other methods?
