I know that if I have what could be an infected lily I need to dig it up and destroy it, and to soak my garden tools in bleach, but I have a few more questions I'm hoping someone can help with.
Firstly (and I hope this isn't one of those dumb questions), is it OK to plant a bulb in the same area that a bulb with the virus has been in? I have a small area of about 17 x 6 feet to plant my lilies because there are herds of deer in my neighborhood and it's too hard to protect them if I plant anywhere else. Since space is limited and I like to optimize any available area in that bed.
Also, I have had terrible aphid infestations and have always used Safer soap. If I were to do a one-time chemical treatment, what would you all recommend I use?
Thanks-
Bethany
Question about lily virus treatment
I just read that canola oil will protect against aphids. I haven't ried it yet.
Sorry, I don't know anything about the infected lily problem. I'm anxious to see what you are told. I've never had a sick lily, but since I just planted about 200, I need to know what to be on the lookout for.
I probably could have worded the topic sentence better... What I am really interested in reading about it what systemic treatment is best for aphids, and how long after removing virused lilies do I have to wait before planting in the same area. I ended up going to a local nursery/garden center and asking for advice on which systemic aphid control chemical to get. I can't remember the brand, but I applied it yesterday (it is granular and I put it around each lily). I'll probably continue to use my Safer spray for a while until the chemical appplication has time to take effect.
I ended up removing seven lilies that appear to be virused. If you look under my thread below entitled "reintroduction" there are some links folks have given with more info on viruses and lilies. If you planted 200, you'll definitely want to keep an eye out so you can nip any problem in the bud, so to speak!
Was that product Bayer or Grubex? That should probably do the trick.
