Oooh--Candyce--an indigo bunting--we usually get them this time of year along with rosebreasted grosbeaks, but I haven't spotted any yet.
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 19
What good news about Grant.
Sorry to hear about DH, though, Robin.
Loved the picture of the bird! I've never seen one here, and am extremely jealous!
Than you for the update about Grant, ROBIN. Such good news about his impending homecoming. I had some leaves on my JMs get hit by the frost, but it's still early in the season and things should turn out just fine.
Yes, great news on Grant, Robin.
Robin, hope Grant is home in your arms very very soon!
The weather here today was tired (lol).....which is what I am. Planted about 50 plants, including a few from last year that I overwintered and forgot about. It was my kind of day. Sunny, warm, and I'll only go inside kicking and screaming. The weather here was the sensational type of gorgeous that we all love.
I thought kicking and screaming were part of your workout, Weeze!!
LOL, if you include kicking him and screaming at him....actually I don't scream at him, just a little low voiced swearing. I haven't kicked him either, but I have punched him. He laughs.
This is the second year that we've had the Indigos visit our feeders. I do feel truly blessed, as they are such a beautiful brilliant blue.
Temp 59.1° Wind SSW 0.0 mph. ☺
Planted 10 caladiums, 7 trillium, 1 Tiarella, 1 begonia hanging basket, & took down (1) 15’ oak branch today. Bought a Yellow Delicious apple tree last night as a pollinator for my Jonathan Apple Tree.
Sounds like a good day, WC. You never seem to have any wind!
Not too much wind on good days but on bad days it sounds like an airplane 500' overhead and the house seems to shake! - I even go to the window sometimes to see the tractor trailer that has been 'passing by every 2 minutes' only to find out its the wind! That's why I cut down a branch today and one yesterday... I'm thinking of their possible trajectory! ☺
Celeste, I hope your DS is doing better.
GE - I love Austen and the Bronte's. I actually just bought a book that is a continuation of Emma. Masterpiece Theatre just recently had a run on Austen. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/austen/index.html . I was in heaven!
Someone had mentioned the Full Moon and frost. That got me to googling and I found this http://www.gardening.cornell.edu/weather/frost.pdf . Very interesting.

That is an interesting link, Anita. Thank you.
I am so ready for a few rainy days! We've had a very lovely spring and I am thankful but I am also tired and sore from 8.5 hours working outside almost every day.
53 and sunny. That is an interesting link, Anita. Not surprised at all at what they say.
Pixie, look at that gorgeous soil! Nature's bounty!
It is a perfect day. And the garden survived last night even with a jury rigged deer/rabbit fence. Loved seeing the bunting, jealous. Had one 20 years ago, none since. Hooray for Grant. Out to do battle. Patti
Yes, that looks ideal, Celeste. Did you amend it?
The only thing we put in it is manure....very seldom have to add anything. It's been over 10 years since we've added anything and the soil test we do each year comes out perfect.
Don't be jealous, Patti.
It was a good twenty year span between my very first sighting of the bunting and last year's flock of about 15 of the little darlings. I was so surprised to see him last night that I almost scared him away when I grabbed the camera. If he comes back, I will count myself very lucky.
It's a gorgeous morning!

Yea for Pixie's patch. Funny how the good time techniques always gets the job done better. We won't argue the point but it does produce better quality produce that tastes better. Doubt that there would be any international pathegons in that patch!

Yes, plenty of salads come out of my garden! Also my greens beans have to go in a pot with a ham, and my squash is always on the table at Thanksgiving.... you get the idea!
All in that plot? How big is it?
20' X 50' for this one....the smaller one is 10' X 18'
Nice!
Let me know if the harvest gets to be too large.
I'll take a trip to your 'farmer's market'!
pixie62560, I know where you live and I am taking a truck off island tomorrow, so I could swing by and snag a load.
I am beyond happy as the fence post are going in right now. And, I just got some plants in, so I have come inside to print out tags as they are going in the ground today. Not happy to not be able to give them a couple of days of recovery time before planting, but I am leaving tomorrow ( with maybe a side trip to Maine) until Tue night, so no choice. We are suppose to get rain over the weekend so that will make them happy. Mostly roses and day lilies so they should be OK.
Candyce, We have our tree swallows back and more are nesting than ever, so we are going to put up more houses on top of my new deer fence in the morning if we have time. They are our favorites.
It is so nice to have everyone so happy about playing in the dirt again. Patti
I just watched the tree swallows checking out the two houses we put up last spring. I never thought that ANY bird would go near them, but there they were. I almost got a photo of them, but they were too quick for my camera. I'm going to sit out a bit later in the afternoon to see if I can catch them at it again.
And, I am so HAPPY to have dirt under my nails again!!
Tree Swallows are people friendly. Move slow and talk to them while they get used to you. I have commonly been able to get within ten feet or even closer when mowing as I ride by.
That's great to know doc.
I will try to be patient as I watch for them again.
My tree swallows are nesting in one of the birdhouses on the barn. Today they were sitting on the dwarf japanese maple and looked so lovely. Wish my camera wasn't inside. I'm praying they stay. They often look like they are nesting, then cut out. I was about 5 feet from them and when I was 10 feet away I realized they were watching me!
Not sure I've seen any here. Just checked google images.
Patti, that soil is DH's pride and joy.....you'll have to deal with him. He's the one who goes gets the manure in the back of his
Toyota(can't beat it to death!) every year and tills it.. 2 years ago he smashed out his back window with a load: I didn't ride in that truck for a looooooong time!!
Because of the smell or because he was angry?
We used to get the swallows where I lived before migration in the beginning of Sept. We lived on a lake and they'd constantly be diving down to get sips of water. Really fun to watch them play catch with feathers. One would fly real high and drop a feather then 2 o3 would swoop down to try and catch it then the one who caught it would bring it back up and drop it, it was the neatest thing.
79 degrees today, sunny and breezy
