Fragrance: Elusive violet fragrance; fragrance to aid memory
Hmmm violets??? Never thought of planting them...mercy...something else to go in search of...LOL You're incredible at increasing my list of fragrant wants... ^_^ Hugs!!!
Interesting articles! Thanks, Bedouin!
I do have sweet violets planted. My favorite is Queen Charlotte. The fragrance is fabulous, but be warned, she self sows quite freely. (That makes me very happy, I would love it to spread far and wide.)
I also have White Czar, but it never lasts long. I haven't found a place where it's happy yet. Royal Robe also has a nice fragrance and the blooms are larger and later(for me) than Charlotte. Dancing Geisha has great foliage, but hasn't flowered for me yet, I just got it last spring. I'll let everyone know about the fragrance of that one once it blooms. I also have Rebecca and Etain. They flower larger and bloom longer than the smaller violets but the fragrance isn't nearly as nice.
I haven't tried Parma violets, I don't think they're hardy for me. :-(
Fragrance1st, it must be delightful to have them! Lucky duck!! You have some I've not heard of. Are they all mixed together? How about some photos? I'd like to try the Parma Violets as I believe they can take more heat. Logees Greenhouse used to carry many types of fragrant violets, but their catalogue listing is sparce, to say the least. Maybe another visit to thier greenhouses in Danielson would offer some not shown in the catalogue. I've called them a couple of times about the varieties they used to have, but I think its been a bad season/seasons for them with the violets. Canyon Creek nursery is my best option, I think.
Isnt it interesting about the elusive fragrance and our ability to re-smell them within a short time!
A pic of one of the fragrant Zone 10 violets. I received it as an exchange from someone who told me these violets had been on his family property for 40 years!
That was a fascinating article, thanks!
