Going AWOL

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 5b)

Beginning Sunday evening, when I wake up, (I work nights/sleep days), I am going to try and quit smoking again! Since I sit at the computer and smoke like an industrial chimney, I will only be logging in to recieve/reply to email till the worst of the cravings let up.

The dirty details:

I have smoked for 32 years.
I am currrently lighting 2 cartons of ultra lights per week!
I can't use even the low dose nicotine patch cause it's still too much nicotine cause I smoke the ultralights.
I have tried Wellbutrin, generic form of Zyban, I get insomnia from taking it.

SSSOOOOOOOO, I'm going to go cold turkey. Every time I have tried to quit in the past, I turn into the B***h from H**l. Please say a prayer for anyone who may come in contact with me, they will need all the help they can get. Since I do overnight stock work in a grocery store, the guys are on notice to "guard the candy aisle!"

My wish list:

A new car
Membership in a gym, so I can lose the weight that I'll gain as I try to quit.
etc. etc

If I have the strenghth not to smoke, I'll post some updates on my progress, other than that, I'll be AWOL for a while.

Wish me luck!

Sharon

Sharon I am a fellow smoker that is trying to quit smoking as well. I was smoking two packs a day and now I am down to one a day. I have tried the pills, the patches, and now I am trying the nicotine inhalation system. I can't stand them, when I take a puff of these things I cough until I think that I am going to die...they are nasty. I am going to go back to the NicoDerm patches, the problem I had with the patches is keeping them on my body. I would put one on only to find it laying on the floor, this time I am going to use a band ade to keep them on lol. I have been smoking for 45 years and I have to take medication to breath, so if I don't quit...I will die. It is hard to crave something that you know is killing you but you can't seem to stop.
I will keep trying and I know that we can beat this nicotine thing, if you need some support just e-me and we can support each other.

This will be one of the hardest things you've ever done. When I had cravings for a cigarette I used to take a Tupperware bowl to work with me and at break time I would munch on radishes, celery, cukes, or cut up cantalope.I wish you the best of luck. I know you can do it.

Maybe this should be the year all DGers give em up? Think of all the plant money you'll have...won't need that lousy Powerball..chump change. Easy for me to say...got a lot of bad habits..just not that one. Good luck all. Dee

Sharon, my thoughts will be with you as I am a smoker myself. Horseshoe is right, there was a great thread about quitting and it had alot of great tips from the folks here who have quit themselves. I've noticed that I smoke more when I am sitting in front of my computer, so I understand why you are going awol. I can't wait to see you back with a success story. Keep us posted whenever you have a chance.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I wish you luck on the not smoking but I think if you stay out of DG the withdrawels from that will be harder on you than the nicotine! If the hands start shaking and the tummy tenses up and you feel like you wanna kill something...it will be from computer withdrawels

Good for you Sharon. Wishing you the best of luck. I have never had the habit because I never started. I got scared of it when they started all the cancer scare reports back when I was a teenager. I have been so thankful that I was scared out of trying it. It will probably be my Dr Pepper habit that will kill me. LOL Hang in there kiddo. I am proud of you.

After suffering a day without cigarettes, I thought it would be wasted if I lit one up. After a week I thought I couldn't waste all that misery by going back to the cancer sticks. I'm now 4 1/2 years smoke free after 30 years of the curse and feel great. Everyone deserves that great feeling of being free of the nicotine addiction. Good luck to you.

Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and suggestions. They truly are appreciated! I'm heading to bed soon and when I wake up, my ordeal will begin. I will try very hard to carry all of your positive thoughts with me as I head to work and go through my first night without a cigarette.

I can do this, I can do this, I can do this....I want a new car, I want a new car....

Thanks again,
Sharon

Hi Everybody! I hope everyone is doing well!

This is an almost one week update: DH still smokes and I cheated with his cigarettes. But...on the positive side...I did smoke a LOT less than usual. I didn't smoke two cartons this week. My "record" is eight hours with only three cigarettes. For me, that is good! I shall redouble my efforts and positive thoughts. I have decided to think in terms of hours instead of days at first. I know, it sounds dumb, but with me, it just might work! LOL! I have also found that Altoids Wintergreen mints do help with the cravings. (Is there a dentist in the house?)

I will quit! I just have to do this hour by hour!

You go girl!!! To me that sounds like some success...pat yourself on the back! By the way, when I used to smoke on a regular basis and then decided to quit I ate juniper berries...from an herbal point the are known for helping people quit the nicotine habit. You can find them in a health food store. You only eat about 5 a day or so to reduce your cravings. Keep up the good work!

Sharon your doing great, keep up the good work and you will have this thing licked, just know that you are not alone.
