Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi Wallaby,

Yep, they breed in the Med and winter in Africa. There's an average of about 15 or so recorded in Britain every year, but mostly on the south coast, this far north only one every few years. The last one in Northumberland was 6 years ago. You're right that they tend to arrive on southerly winds in spring; when migrating birds go past where they normally stop to breed, it is known as 'spring overshooting'.

Ha. i was WONDERING how your feeders were doing

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Got a new taker in the woodpecker condo this year. Seems like a different woodpecker nests in one of these two dead tree stubs every year. Many different size holes make a nice variety for every breed.

Not a very good pic, but it looks like feeding time.

Here is another picture. I thought it was a red belly woodpecker.
Other condo guests in past years have been Pileated, hairy and downy.

Not really a good pic, but it shows the how much bigger a Grackle is over a Red-winged Blackbird.
