Yep, they breed in the Med and winter in Africa. There's an average of about 15 or so recorded in Britain every year, but mostly on the south coast, this far north only one every few years. The last one in Northumberland was 6 years ago. You're right that they tend to arrive on southerly winds in spring; when migrating birds go past where they normally stop to breed, it is known as 'spring overshooting'.
