How fast does Nishiki Willow, Dappled Willow Grow?

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

I have a gallon pot I got for like 2.00 at Lowes last year and was wondering how fast this pretty shrub will grow when I finally get it in the ground?

Fast - about a metre a year until it is 5-6m tall, then it slows down.

Thank you so much.
Exciting, well have a big beautiful one in no time!!

Fast, fast, fast! We have a dappled willow planted next to a pond in a group with a japanese maple, fat albert blue spruce and contorted hazel. We whack the heck out of that willow about 3 times a year to keep it in size and to encourage the pretty new pink growth. It's glorious when covered with pretty pink branch tips but rapidly gets too bushy, wide and unruly. Be brutal with your pruners . The shrub will reward you for it.

Ill keep that in mind.
Im gonna take cuttings as I can and root them for my Bonsai.
It'll be so pretty!!!

If you consider a telephone pole sized tree a candidate for Bonsai then the dappled willow would be the equivilant shrub. That "thing", when grafted onto a standard and supposedly grown as a small weeping tree, (don't you just love commercial growers' talk) grew 12' in a season. Despite several rounds of hard pruning. Please post pictures. This I hafta see.

As soon as I get one going I'll post pictures in the bonsai forum. 12 feet in a year?! YIKES!

Mine have been slow to grow in drier soil. They remained about 3' high the first year and 4' the second. The area they are in is good soil but little irrigation. I hope they take off like yours this year. I have a fence to cover.

Those would be lovely as a living fence. Hmm, got me thinking now,LOL.

Not really! It is very broad and lax, and distinctly untidy.

You couldn't trim it up to tame it a bit?

I would have it draped with virginia creeper on the top and the base is invisible due to it being recessed below a rock wall and Carl Forester grass in front.

It LOVES the pruning loppers. The response here was like nothing I've ever seen. It would produce large numbers of enormous whips reaching to the sky. Down right freaky. It had one moment of beauty. I always gave it a hard pruning in late winter. The spring leaf out was a mass of green foliage that was nearly completely flecked with white and shrimp pink. It was really quite stunning. But then the rampant growth and battle to keep it shapely began. It was sold as a cultivar likely to reach 8 - 10 ft both in height and width. In three years the whips actually would get 16' to 20'. Year 5 it met with the chain saw.

I hate to say I got rid of mine here. I really did like the foliage - it just wasn't meant to be living on my small city lot. It did grow 10' a year - my mistake not it's.

I think I am going to like this plant alot, lol.
Weve got about 6 something acres so if it grows this fast I can get alot of cuttings and have a mass planting of it.
Famous last words, haha.
Thanks guys!!
