Angelica gigas.......i so want this plant

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

please, if you have this plant i want it too. i had some seeds and i have just a few more that i am going to sow again but so far no plants. lmk what you want in trade. thanks.

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

hi mama.....i love this plant to. we were up in alaska when we saw this the very first time. its huge! but very cool. from what i read on it it has to be planted when its cold... below i think 45* and probably wouldnt hurt to chill them for two weeks before trying to plant them. they dont like to be transplanted from what i understand. i got some seeds to but never got around to planting them. the info also said that they need to be sown fresh. i believe there a biannual.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i believe you are right on the biannual part but i read that they do reseed. ALASKA? that doesn't sound compatible to texas, ya think? i got my seeds from marjolein from the netherlands and had to look it up. someone on daves described it as sort of prehistoric looking. have you never seen it growing around you? and how far is it to alaska from you? any chance you'll be going soon? that's a joke but think about it anyway. lol.

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

lol..... well when we were there it was warm and sunny like it is where i live. but it does get very cold and snowy. they were about 6+ ft. tall and gorgeous. it is very unusual looking and thats why i like it! i love the weird and unusual. here is one of my weird babies... a gunerra or dinosaur plant. this is still 'coming' out of dormancy and hopefully it will get 6ft this year if im lucky! it gets bigger and taller every year.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

that likes water too, doesn't it? and what is that pineapple thing in the middle?

Warren, OH(Zone 5b)

if no one has it on here, Big Dipper farm has it for $5.99.
Kathy

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

kathy thank you. i never even looked for the plant from a vender.

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

hi mama.......
that 'pineapple' looking thing is the flower!! so far this one has 3. its full of tiny little buds that open and the whole thing turns a powdery yellow and pollen (im presuming) goes everywhere. its a really easy plant to grow and at least around my parts it goes dormant in winter and leaves a fuzzy knob. they have a very high water need as they are a bog type plant. during the summer here i will water it every day, nice deep soak. the leaves get so big theres so much evaporation. but they are such cool plants! give it lots of good mulch to live in and lots of water. it can get as tall as 8-10 ft high. the leaves on mine have gotten easily 4 ft across.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

shokami, one of these days i'm going to have soil that i can at least keep a plant like that watered thru the summer. and when i do i'll come looking FOR YOU. go on and get me a gigas while we're waitin'. hahahaha

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

lol.............. all i have are last years seeds and i dont even know if THEY will grow! have to wait until winter to try again....... :P

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Shokami - awesome Gunnera picture. Post it in the PNW forum and you will be the envy of everyone up here. We have so much freezing and thawing and rain at around freezing that it's hard to keep them from splitting at the corm in winter. Beautiful picture.

Good luck on getting your angelica, mamajack.

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

wow katie....... were basically in the same zone and yours split? woooowwww....... we have had some pretty good arctic snaps that has lasted a few weeks (which is unusual here) but everythign seemed to do ok. did or do you cover or mulch yours in the winter? all i do is take the old leaves that i cut off when its through for the year and stack them up and cover the corm..... makes a nice lttle tent! i ahd read that soemwhere so i did it... worked fine.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

That zone thing is a little deceptive. I'm in the foothills, so I lose some of the warming maritime effect on temps. But I also don't get the wind that those closer to the sound get.

That having been said, most people I know in the Seattle area protect their Gunnera in the winter - especially when they're young. Typically, people just protect the center from frost and excessive water, so they make use of plastic, rather than relying on the heavy mulch.

We also have some trouble with plants like salvia rotting and splitting. We get freezes at about the same time that we get rain and the pooling water (if your native clay hasn't been amended and your salvia doesn't have good drainage) freezing and melting (it doesn't have to be that cold of a freeze) frequently spells the end for the plant.

I have a baby Gunnera that was given to me last year in a pot. I actually had two, but one didn't make it through the winter, even though I had it under overhanging shelter. We had some extended cold temps. So I'm a novice at actually growing one of my own . . .

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I usually have seedlings from gigas and....dang can't remember what the other one is
stuff is only just coming up

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

CRESTEDCHIK..........please, oh please, find those seedlings. i'll be very patient. and what do you mean you can't remember what the other one was? something else i might like? oh goody.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Still not sure which angelica this one is

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/641307/

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

it's beautiful chik. do you still have just one plant? and how many years have you had it now? does it bloom every year now?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

not just one plant
they reseed
some take 2 or 3 years to bloom for me but make up for it in the spectacular blooms
I let them reseed where ever they want

not sure I can tell the difference in the seedlings

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

do you have the purple stemmed one as well?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

gigas?

yeah
but thats what I'm trying to say
I can't tell the difference in the seedlings

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey CC, how have you been doin'.. You still have that grapefruit that I brought to you. I haven't been here for a couple of years, but I finally was able to come back. OMG I will never forget the look on your face when I brought you that tree on the plane, LOL

Dee

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Dee you silly girl
I have really missed you

and YES
I still have the grapefruit

and I gotta say
boxes of plants instead of luggage...
Love it ....but its still strange...ROTFLMAO
wonder what security would say these days......

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

I don't think I could pull it off now. I have a hard time getting my shampoo through.

I dropped off the site after my daughter got real sick and then I was pretty sick for the last 2 years. But hey, you can't kill off quirky, just knock it back a bit.

So I guess that you got your greenhouse finished. Do you have it crammed full?? I bet you do. So what are you into these days??

Dee

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

oh, i gotcha cc. at what point can you tell which is which? i love it when old friends unite. lol.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Yes it was great. You see she wanted this grapefruit tree. Well I found one with a grapefruit on it - well of course - I live in FL. Well it was to big to mail so I just boxed it up and took it on the plane with me as a piece of luggage. You should have seen her face when I got there with this big box, and the grapefruit never fell off either. Geez we had alot of fun.

CC those puppies are sooo cute!! Kinda makes you want one but they look bigger than my cats.

Dee

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

yeah
they are 2 days old and close to 2 lbs......
your cat would be a meal for them soon

Dee
is everything OK now?

Mamajack
I looked this am
there are leaves coming up
but I'd have to wait till they were too big to ship to see whats what

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i love those puppies. i want to kiss them all. you have all those little colored tags on their necks...is that their birth orders? i just want to hold them.

how big is too big to ship? and if it's tall you could use one of those triangular mailers?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Puppies!!!! Congrats. Is it eight of them? The collars are just to tell them apart when they're little, right?

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Well if I remember correctly is was about 5 ft tall and about 1 ft wide. I kept it in the pot so as not to
loose the grapefruit. It would not have fit in one of those triangular mailers.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

lol. not you dee. i thought cc said the gigas could get too big to ship. so i was thinking it could go in a triangular mailer.

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

what beautiful pups! sure theyre not sharpeis! he he..... guess they will grow into their skin....... so cute!!!!!! ((((((((puppies)))))))))

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i know shokami. they are gorgeous and cc you take such lifelike pictures. that one ought to go to the photo contest this year.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

CC! You have big babies! They are gorgeous!

Just to be on topic, I beg CC for her Angelica all the time. LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

All I know is it was like fireworks when it bloomed
Its gorgeous,huge,but gorgeous

'Chele

I thought I had stuffed some in somewhere

I posted this on the other ID thread

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL CC! We were waiting for them to come up last year....

I think you did stick some in a box before I moved, maybe with some water plants? Maybe it was in 2005. Seems like I remember one in the back yard.

I know you sit still about as often as I do. ;)
