Poncirus trifoliata questions...

Indianapolis, IN

I have a flying dragon that is about 3/4" diameter and just over 3' tall that is showing great growth on top. I was wondering, how large the trunks become on the trees? Also, how well do they take to air layering and normal cutting and rooting?

So no idea on how easy it is to root cuttings on this flying dragon?

'Flying Dragon' roots 100% with 2000 ppm IBA treatment of summer softwood cuttings, according to Dirr. See his propagation text, authored by Dirr and Heuser.

I have not attempted rooting this species myself.

In my climate we don't get the hot sun that they seem to need to root. I use a 30% sand, 80% peat and 20% perlite in a flat with a cover and place the finished cuttings flat in the sunniest spot in the greenhouse. Just a word of warning, doing cuttings isn't the easiest because of the spines.

I take it that this Propagation text is here on this site and that it will help explain what you said...lol. "2000 ppm IBA treatment " that is Cambodian right?

growin:
Yeah I know what you mean about the spikes. I like that term, spikes, it really is more fitting then thorns because thorns just sound small.

Anyone have any idea about air layering this plant?

Herby:

Ask your questions over at the Propagation forum; there are stalwart folks there that will walk you through anything you need interpreted. Meanwhile, I can give up this much of the Rosetta Stone:

2000 (comes right after 1999; 20 x 100)
ppm (parts per million; also a Scottish power company)
IBA (indolebutyric acid; interior buffer area in landscape code)

You can thank me later.

Herby what are you using these rootings for? Just wondering becuase flying dragon root stock is something that is used in my part of the woods.

I just really love this little tree and I am not sure what I will do with all the cuttings. I want to use some to make into Bonsai, some I would like to give to people I work with to get them to love the tree too, and if I get to the point were I have a lot of cuttings that root I will offer them on here for postage or trade for other types of tree cuttings.

When I move out to the country I plan on planting different types of trees that are contorted and many types of trees that have thorns.
