How do I save my Pagoda Dogwood?

Zimmerman, MN

I unwrapped the trunk of my Pagoda Dogwood and an animal (I think a rabbit) chewed the bark away at the bottom the next day. The trunk has a small crack where the bark is missing. I'm pretty sure it's not insects because there wasn't any damage when I removed the wrap. My question is: is there anything I can do to save my tree? Or is it doomed and should I remove it?

If it is not chewed all the way around the diameter of the trunk, your tree is not doomed. Can you post a picture of the damage?

It's chewed most of the way around. I'll take some pics and get them posted.

Try using some of the black, sticky, tree wound stuff. I use a product called Tanglefoot. You can find it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Don't get the spray on type, it's messy and gets all over your hands. If you don't seal up the wound, critters can get in under the bark and then you will have trouble. See if you can get some chicken wire and make a cage tall enough so Mr. Rabbit can't reach the trunk again, or re-wrap the tree for a while, so it can heal.

Just my 2 cents.

The best treatment for a tree wound is sunlight. Tanglefoot and other tree wound paints will trap pathogens and moisture, actually aiding rots or cankers. Take a look at this list of common Tree Myths. Tree wound paint and the problems it can cause is about half way down.
