I found this very large fly on my pier. It is the largest I have ever seen. It also seems to have a hood ornament Any ideas?

Hi Trois,

Closest I got was a horse fly at this site: http://insects.tamu.edu/fieldguide/
The site describes horse flies but only has one picture for over 100 different species http://insects.tamu.edu/fieldguide/cimg224.html
The description sounded like your fly probably fits in this category

ETAdd - Great picture!!

Thanks, Stacey. I am sure it is a horse fly, but I have never seen one with the hood ornament. I will keep looking.

Horse flies are usually close to an inch long. If it's about a half inch it is probably a deer fly. They also bite people.

It was at least an inch long, maybe a bit more.
