The birch tree in our backyard is dripping sap like its raining. We noticed this since yesterday. There are also some strange orange-red patches that look kind of moist and oozy (?) or maybe like mold, I don't know. I've added a picture. Does anybody know what's going on with our birch tree. We did have a really bad winter this year. This has never happened before. This tree does seem to have a lot of fallen branches throughout the year.
(Note butterfly sipping the sap.)
Dripping Birch????
Is that I neat line of little holes drilled in your tree? Sure looks like woodpecker damage. I have three live oaks they nearly killed. I looked online and found out what to do to keep them off our trees and, fortunately, they have all come back this spring.
Ach, so -yes! I did see a wood pecker the other day and thought how cute.... I'll have to see what can be done about that.
sundaisy,
Here's the site that had the most info on what to do about woodpeckers. Our trees are still just small enough that we chose to use the 1/4" hardware cloth (found it at Home Depot).

They can do a lot of damage to a tree in a very short period of time. Hope you can get rid of them.
