14 DO Silkies Roos? or just cute

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Sorry about all the pictures, but I just love taking them. The silkies had their first short outing today.. it was only about an hour but they really enjoyed the grass.

I did purchase straight run so am prepared for any news anyone can give me. I have suspicions about two of them.. very bossy, chesty and mouthy.. lol, does that describe a roo?

Here goes my new line of photos,

They are really cute. How old are they now? I just got four silkies. They are 4 days old

I love the coloring on pic 3, such contrast in the colors! Should be interesting to see how it feathers out.

The 3 Black silkies, they all look alike, I can tell a difference, but thought it might be a bit boring to look at the same phot 3 times.. so:

Top left =1
Top Right =2
Bottom= 3

I just tried to reload it again and it didnt go.. I'm not sure whats up.. but I will try seperatly now.. weird.

Very cute. In your title, it says 14 DO silky roos, what does the DO mean?

Woodsville, NH

Day old!
I found that the silkies or any bird for that matter that stands up as tall as he can get is a roo. Of course this is just my opinion!!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

And their new home.. well when they get big enough to hold their own heat. The Silkies get their own place in the world.

This is just a small photo, I just started a photo albulm, haven't gotten very far yet but all the pictures of this coop are there.

fran, love every bit of it! DH has been earning his oats LOL

love the Jolly Rancher name, 2 cute ^_^

as far as sexing your chicks, i would watch for comb and wattles and larger feet...

Hey Frans, do you have chicks from Ideal? Mine are now 6 days old and look almost identical to yours. I have the same question about "what color is it" and "is it a cockerel or a pullet". Two of mine look like your number three picture, and I named one of them Tesla because he/she is always making eye contact with me. The other colors are no problem, but I can't figure out a red from a buff, and to add to the confusion, I have one red or buff with distinct partridge markings. They are all so adorable I don't really care, but it would be nice to know. One little blue one is the first in the feed and has to kick it all around. I have yet to figure out a name from him/her.

My dog and I sit in front of the box in amazement for hours on end.

Thank you all for your encouragement. I am loving these babies.

Hi Karen,
My chicks came from My Pet Chicken, from what I hear, their chicks actually come from Meyer hatchery. So far I am pleased with what I ordered, but then again, I am new also, so don't really know the quality of what I ordered.

Each breed that I received has their own breed quirks, then individual quirks.. it has been a joy to watch.
My Dh has been laid off this entire time and I must say.. I think we should get chick maternity leave placed on the ballet in every state, he is as addicted as I am.. and smiling and laughing the entire way!

Very nice chicken coop!

I have a black silkie that had me fooled until he finally crowed. They can be really hard to sex. I do know that the roos tend to walk on their tippytoes, but not always when they are young. I think when yours get older, you'll notice that the hens have a bigger fluffball on their heads and the roos have a more streamlined crest with little streamer feathers trailing off the back of the crest. Sometimes it's really hard to tell with the silkies and watching for combs and wattles is not always accurate.

Thank you, of course today was the first day we used it, so we had to make some changes right up..

we found we needed (wanted) a handle to move it around with. While we never really intended to move it on a daily basis, while the chicks are little we will try to keep them out of the wind, direct sun.. and so on.

We also added a perch... well a 3 rung perch.. I just happened to mention it would be kind of nice to have a perch and of course.. coops are much more fun than clean garages..lol

so new additions, dh, his dog cole and 27 chicks.. enjoying the fresh air..

Patch.. Thanks too, I just thought I had remembered someone "sexing" very young silkies just by looking at their heads a little while back and I thought maybe silkies were easier or something.. just nieve I guess.

I have a white one that is just a pistal... I am pretty sure it tried to flog me today... I just looked at this little thing.. and snatched it up.. stared right into its little tiny face and said.."say wahaaaat?" lol... too funny... then I let the dog lick it.. I think I will tak a few extra minutes a day with this one and make sure I make really good friends.

can you imagine.. 2 weeks... get real little chick... what testosterone...

Hutch looks great. What a good hubby! I drooling at how green everything looks there. Ours is only just starting to green up a bit outside. Still mostly brown outside! At least the snow is melted! How many chickens will be staying in the coop you made?

So far, all of my silkie roos have been nothing but little gentlemen. It's the bigger roos that I seem to have problems with. My silkie hens have taken to setting, and everyday I come home two of the hens switch places in each nesting box. So one day my white hen is in the right one and my red is in the left, and then vice versa the following day. It's funny!

love the pics and coop!! wish my youngsters would hold still for pics, lol. here is some partridge pics for you from my flock. these r all just born last few days.

Thank you so much for looking Silkiechick.
In my batch I did order 2 partridge rocks, their coloring and these chicks are nothing alike. Their not really red red.. They are very yellow with just a touch of red.. haily has a lot of stripes while the other is more like the paintbrush was out of paint. lol (of course I ordered 2 of everything.

I used coffee containers when I was trying to "sort" my order.

Those partridge colors look just like my partridge rock colors and my silkies don't even come close to that coloring.. so as amazed as I am.. I really think (these) my guys or girls are red.. tells how dahh I am.. I really thought a red would be just that.. red.. whats the stripey thing all about???

Edited to clarify my silkies

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

what breed are those fran?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

some red chickens start out as yellow chicks. look up chick pics for RIRs

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

they are both the silkies and that is where I ordered them from

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

hmm, OK. well i am no help. i hope you get partridge, but i am leaning towards the reds...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

I'm ok with them being red Tamara..
I had ordered both red & partridge.. they called the day they shipped and said partridge was back ordered till June but they didn't want to hold my order so they sent me 2 extra black.
But with those funny markings, I couldn't hardly believe they were reds.. but I think now.. they are really reds.. guess I shouldn't doubt the people that do the paperwork.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, i have been guilty of wishful thinking many times before. and people make mistakes, would be nice if they would make them in OUR favor more often LOL

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

hmm... after seeing those pics i'm not sure....

their reds look like how my partridge usually come out but this last batch i got some funky color shades with my new breeders, lol. i don't think i've ever had partridge quit look like their bottom pic. my origional partridge flock thows yellow chicks, with back being a brown chipmonk stripe with a thin white stripe on each side and about 3 black dots on back of the heads. the pics above r from my new breeders.

here is some close ups of one of the sg babies. it shows the best markings of my new hatchlings.

Thumbnail by silkiechick
Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

like i said i've never seen a red baby before but to me they look partridge but i'm not sure u got me stumped, lol. love to see pics as they grow can tell u when they are feathered in some.

mabe the red is some how derived from partridge wich would account for the markings but i'm not 100% sure on that theory. my reason for that is my exhibition whites throw cream colored babies w/ cinnamon stripe with thin white stripe on each side. they r white recessive and there is no partridge in them but yet they still have a light chipmonk effect. not all hatch w/ that alot r cream color but when adult those babies w/ those markings r my purest whites. i have hatched whites from others and they r always yellow but i can't explain it other than i know mine carry white reccesive genes. my point is mabe the markings r not a partridge only thing, usually that's all we see with that type of marking. mabe it has a relevance to something else since other colors aparently carry it, is that possible?
