Soulja, that's a lovely blue, unusual shade. Do you have a name on this one?
Can't remember if you've told us or not.

Louisville, KY

That's Matsukaze, "Wind In the Pines", and if it's labeled wrong I hope Sensei Convolvulaceae will do his thing and correct me. I don't mean to be lazy, but I do like that about him. =)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL Shawna, hope Ron likes his new name. It does have a nice ring
and very apropro.

Shawna - Well, pooh! I posted a Birthday Greeting on the other thread, but I bet you haven't seen it yet ...

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4838570

I wish, I wish, I wish ... I had a greenhouse! LOL! I am drooling looking at all the beautiful MG blooms! Mine are taking far too long to grow and bloom! LOL!

Louisville, KY

OH MY GOODNESS! I let out a little yelp when I saw that one! WOWZER it just keeps getting better doesn't it? holy cow I love it!!!! Feed it and love it for all it's worth.

Thanks Becky.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Shawna - OH YEAH! I am thoroughly enjoying that vine! Everyday it blooms and each bloom is unique! It has some very beautiful traits that I haven't seen on other vines. But that blue, purple-pink color and varying patterns is what makes me do a double take every day. I really like it a lot! Now if I can just get some seed pods to form. So far no pollen in the blooms. But I'm not too worried yet. My Yaguruma Blizzard did the same thing until the plant aged and then it made plenty of seeds. This vine is such a tease!!! ;-P~~~~

Louisville, KY

Good for you! It must be very satisfying to see the fruits of your efforts in assisting Mother Nature in her quest for the coolest Atomic Flower ever. I wonder, Can one capture and "store" special pollen to use later? On the Love Child's Baby Daddy?

We have GOT to get these two together!

Absolutely!!!! I believe you can save pollen to be used at another time. Sensei Convolvulaceae (Ron) would know about that. I recall that being mentioned on one of his posts last year.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Here's another bloom from the same day. Can you imagine what the blooms would look like if we crossed your vine and mine! Ohhhhhhh yeahhhhhhh!

HA HA! I hope that my nomenclature for O' Sensei CONVOLVULACEAE sticks.

He's earned it.

And yes, who needs E Harmony when you got the DG MG Hook Up !!!!?!!!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I found it, I found it! Karen (bluespiral) rocks! She did list his post on the sticky:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=1661670

If you read down Ron's post, I am quoting from him:

Quoting:
When I ask someone to collect and send me pollen,I ask them to do the following;
1) remove the entire corolla by carefully snipping it off by using a small cuticle scissors
2) cut the stamens off at the base and place them onto a plastic plate to dry in the sun for several hours, because if you don't do this, the pollen will be too moist and will get moldy
3) place the partially dried pollen loaded stamens into a small plastic or glass container,I use these materials so the pollen does not run off and get absorbed into materials like paper...
4) secure the containers by wrapping them securely with large packaging tape, place them into an appropriate protected container, preferably a small box adequately padded, and ship it overnight or as fast as possible, and after opening use the stamens to paint the stigmas of the flowers you want to pollinate

Any pollen that you want to store for future use ,should be stored in a cool relatively dry place, but I don't like to use pollen that has been refrigerated or stored for over a couple months at most...

So what do ya think, Shawna? Want to give it a go? Mine don't have pollen on them currently and I know your vines may still be small. Shall we consider swapping pollen to fertilize each other's vines in the very near future when yours blooms more and mine starts producing pollen?

And here is a weblink photo of MG bloom/vine parts:

yes for sure! I'm slightly afraid right now that I might have hardened all mine too quickly. They've spent many 70 - 80 degree days out in partial shade, but they have all spent the night out for the last couple nights (mid 50s). I'll have to see how they all do, but it looks like blooming has slowed a little. There are no freezes even close forecasted for the next 10 days. (after which time it is FINALLY safe to plant out). I will keep you posted on how this one does and collect the pollen according to Sensei's careful instructions. (I hope I'm worthy and up to the task.... )

okay off to look at ebay for japanese mgs. told my self was gonna stay away as no money but i love those purples and that blue above oh my.

and hope you had a wonderful birthday

imzadi - If you can wait ... I will share seeds from mine in another month or two when I get seeds. If Shawna and I cross ours, I plan to grow out seeds right away and will share seeds of that one as well. :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Shawna - Your vines should be fine. The I. nils do like warmer temps, so they will slow down in growth. My NOID above did the same thing, but you should see my vine now that the temps have risen during the days. It has grown like crazy!!! It is in the 50-60's at night here too currently.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

cool i can wait as hubby would probably have a hissy if bought anything else anyway hehe. but i am looking. window shopping and its hard as they so pretty

thanks Marie

thanks imzadi. It was GREAT! My husband had a big old fashioned surprise party for me, I was shocked and amazed and danced with all my friends to the Chili Peppers mostly til 2:30. Not bad for an old lady ((((42, (the new 32? I hope not. I worked hard enough to get here. LOL)

update #2:

I spy 3 big ol' green seed pods on this....

Pardon the newbie ignorance but does the vine always go to seed nearing the end of its life? I remember gerris saying when the vine thinks its dying it goes to seed which is what most plants do, but still continues to flower.... AAAK! now I'm scared.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Shawna - Awwww ... you are still just a "baby"! :-) Well ... maybe more like a "teen" ! LOL! How nice of your hubby to surprise you with a party! Sounds like you had a rockin' good time! Gotta love the Chili Peppers! ;-D

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

cool you had a great time.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I know most of mine will produce seed pods right away "IF" they are pollinated. But perhaps Gerris was talking about the blooms producing pollen. Mine currently is NOT producing pollen. I know ... I tried to pollinate by hand (brush) some of my blooms with NO LUCK! I see no pollen yet! But as soon as I do ... look out!!! Got my trusty brushes ready!

Added to say:

Is your vine root-bound in the pot? Sometimes the vines can be tricked if they are cramped for root space. I wonder if that might motivate them to produce seeds?

right on u know this! dream of Californication, with birds I share this lonely view & yes I'm cryin now my Lovely (Atomic) Man.... i need to stop....

so, i think this one should just stay inside here with me and get ready for the wedding....

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh! And such a wedding it shall be! LOL!

I wonder what kind of container to save the pollen (stamens) in? All I can think of is a test tube! LOL! We are truly getting quite scientific about the merging of these 2 vines. But I so want to see what we can make from these 2 gorgeous vines!

Just call us the MG Fertility Docs! LOL!

Louisville, KY

okay. one arranged marriage coming right up!

Talk to you all soon. and Thanks for all the Bday wishes.

Hope you had a wonderful day!
