Stoke's Seed Swap Babies

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm wondering about planting one of my ornamental peppers with the lilac petunias since I have so many of them lol That should be a good combo don't you think that pepper of mine has some pink in it, won't look as good as yours Robin with the iris but it will be pretty :) That's a nice combination, you lucked out there! And I love your lobelia planted in that planter!

I was done sowing seeds except for the ones I want to sow in the dirt then tabasco sent me some more butterfly weed :) I just have to start that one it's cinderella 8^) Esp. since my butterfly garden is so bare this year lol

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I got extremely lucky with both :) And the lobelia is in my white/blue area, so it's working out perfectly. Now if I could just get Ms. Clean to finish putting the polyurethane coat on the old wood ladder I use to make a fountain, I can finish setting that up. The birds are really upset with me that their watering hole isn't there yet. Just up to the right in that pic is a half-round container on the wall of the house, and it has the trailing blue petunias that came in the swap. Here they are in the back yard in front of some False Blue Indigo that just opened up.

Thse petunias are really going to look nice in that corner when they fill out mine aren't that long yet and I haven't even planted mine yet :) My FBI has been in bloom a while.

I did plant one petunia so far in a rather small pot cause he was the odd ball, I only had three pink petunias and one turned out to be red almost. I have all kinds of plants to put in pots but not sure how I want to plant them, I still need to do the three pots stacked on top of each other and trying to find the best spot to put them, I just can't make my mind up lol

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

your petunias look great! I'm giving up on my raspberry swirl seedlings they are way too small still, but the lilac I have are finally growing up! All I need to do now is get them a body guard from the chipmunks!!!

The chippers run by all my seedling pots and pick a few and hop in, knock out the seedlings...bury their treasures...then I refill the dirt, put back the seedlings if possible....the little guys do it again. I can never figure out what pots they will hop into; very random. They are in full chippy swing at this time running all around with their chompers full of bird seed so I need to plant faster! I like all wildlife around here so I don't really mind, or at least I try not to let them bother me.

Yesterday I saw a HUGE hawk in our front maple tree ~ a group of black birds swarmed it and chased it away. I've never seen a hawk that large here before, the black birds are really fearless.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

wow - a hawk that big generally means a lot of potential dinner. It could be the birds and chippers have drawn his attention! This may sound goofy, but I'm sometimes afraid a hawk will get our smallest dog (she's about 5#) when we're out at my sister's place. In the summer you can hear their cries all the time so I try not to let her wander alone - lOL!

I've got a couple "odd' petunias, that are really from Weez seeds. one you can see in the earlier picture, the other is still in it's cup, I need to get it put someplace more permanent. Lea, I think it may end up with the osteospermum you sent me, which is doing-quite-fine-thankewverymuch... the colors are close enough they might work out nicely together.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Robin are you talking about the osteospermum going with your petunias and irises, I think the colors would match, it's kind of hard to tell if they are lavendar or pink :)

We have a lot of hawks around here too and they watch for voles in my flower beds which is a good thing but I have a kitten about 6 wks. old so you know I'm nervous about him too but his mother stays with him all of the time, it's so funny I can be over by my plants by the garage and the kitten is by the house and the mother comes over by me and I ask her where her baby is and she goes to get him lol

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Lea - I'll have to pot them up tomorrow and take a pic :) We lost electricity for about 12 hours from the storm, and had some really wild winds here overnight, so I've spent the day cleaning yards. Yippee!! I'm planning on spending time taking more turf out of the front yard tomorrow, and then I'll finally have enough space to be able to start putting some of these babies into the ground. I also have to dig out some shrubs and stuff in the back yard that we're giving to the neighbors so that I can get some other things planted!

I love that your cat gets her kitten, but it's a little unnerving that she understands that, but probably ignores you about other things!

Hi

I just posted the thread for the September Fantasy Seed Swap

[HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

I hope some of you join up

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

The link didn't come through, Michaela.

Here are my 3 Geraniums from the swa-op.

Suzy

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Kind of messy because I have a bunch of potas all jammed up together, but at least they're blooming.

Suzy, what is that planted with your geraniums purple tansy or cosmos? I got one pink geranium out of the bunch with some burgandy in the middle so they still match :)

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I bet it's cosmos, I don't think Suzy did any of the Tansy, and I *think* I see little yellow flowers on it....which reminds me that I need to get out the Tansy seed I have left and send some out, and start a few more. They didn't transplant well at all for a second transplant, and just up and died. So next time it will be straight into the ground for them.

I had to break down and give my sis the one geranium that survived (MUST NOT WATER AS MUCH NEXT YEAR......) and told her I MUST have seeds from it, and she's responsible for it. I got smacked on the shoulder :) In fact, I'm at her place now with two plant trays of things to put in her yard, as they're just not gonna make it into mine this year and they really deserve to get out of those cups. So she's getting some snaps, asparagus, cosmos, hollyhocks, coleus, rudbeckia hirta, rose campions (that really torques me, I wanted those in MY yard...), agastache, and WS dianthus, clary sage and angel's trumpet. But not until it's a bit cooler. I think we'll be out planting around 9:00 pm tonight - LOL!

Lea, thank you again for the osteospermum and the other things you sent up for me with Suzy - they look FABulous! And I've already gathered some seed from them......

Thanks for the info on the watering system Tuink, I'm going to keep my eye out for one of those.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hey Robin :) I've planted about four of the tansy so far still have like three more and you know what, I bought some osteospermum of the darker purple that I wanted and haven't even planted any of the ones that I grew yet lol They don't look so good either cause I haven't planted them, but the ones I bought are looking good LOL I haven't gotten any seeds yet, I've been deadheading for now, I want blooms :)

I learned my lesson about watering the geraniums last time I grew them but I'm wondering about the seeds has anyone ever gotten seeds from the annual ones before? I grew some before and watched for seeds but never got any.

Here is the thread for the Monthly Mayhem - September Fantasy Swap

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

you know, I never thought about whether or not that things would set seed, Suzy will know!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I grew both white osteospermum and mixed giant osteospermum from seeds I received in trade. They are fabulous! Unfortunately, I didn't realize the mixed giant would be orange and yellow, so they were planted in the wrong spot - so I am collecting the seeds for it now. Once the flowers are finished, I will remove them and plant something pink in their place.

Anyway, I definitely want the orange and yellow ones - just in a different garden (no room this year)

I bought the seeds for the Passion mix osteospermum from T & M seed sale - just 10 seeds in a package. Believe me, I am going to save seeds from these and see if they come true.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

The geranium seed is that little tail thing in the bloom. It needs to get real dry before you pull it out. I started to save some last year but didn't because I was afraid they would not germinate. One year I had one fall down in the pot and grow during the winter. It was the same as the parent plant but that proba bly does not always happen.

Did some of you grow the Martha Washington geranium? I think that is what I saw at Whipker's in Columbus earlier and they were $15 each. Very unusual and beautiful. Is that the correct name?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

What have folks done with their fairy snapdragons? I have four of them in pots - but I found them so hard to start and keep that I am terrified to put them in the gardens. Can I just keep them in their little pots and bring them in during the winter?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Are those little fairy snaps purple/blue Seandor? I got a couple of stray plants in the sightseeing mix, and it may be those I ended up with two plants I have one bloom right now and it's so cute! I'm guessing they take sun, I have them in the morning sun until I figure out what they are I thought they may be snaps or pempernil (sp).

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Seandor, is this the fairy snaps: Chaenarrhinum origanifolium
fairy snapdragon ‘summer skies? I had babied mine too and finally planted a few clumps into a pot arrangement and our chipmunks keep digging in the pot!!! I'm hoping I get to see them bloom...that is if they don't get dug up :0 I have them with ornamental oregano, lilac petunias, and nolana.

Nice blooms Suzy on the geraniums :) I only have 2 blooms so far and one is sort of bug eaten and not photo worthy.

Indynanny, glad you mentioned how to pick the geranium seeds. I was just looking at some we have and was wondering when to pick them

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

I had trouble with my fairy snaps and none of them lived to see the great outdoors. :(

I think my geraniums need to be moved into more sun. I don't have the first bud yet let alone any blooms. Double :(

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, the fairy snaps are Chaenarrhinum origanifolium fairy snapdragon ‘summer skies, wind. Should I plant these in the garden? Or?????

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Seandor I wish I knew myself!!! I've never grown summer skies before either and not sure what would be best. I was thrilled just to get seedlings because last year my seeds didn't even germinate. I planted this years in a pot on our porch but they have not bloomed yet.

I've been still planting and transplanting seedlings. They really take off once they get into larger pots or direct sown. I would plant your fairy snaps somewhere asap :)

lala, if you move them to more sun you will get some buds and blooms! Mine in the sun are blooming and those I put in our hanging baskets that get partial sun/shade (more sun if they would cascade out) are doing nothing. I may have to pull them out and pot them up in more sun too.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Lookie! Now THAT'S blue.

Edited because it's late and my poor typing skills are even poorer now.

I ended up with two seedlings I think of the fairy snaps. they have little blue snaps on them, I planted each one in a 5" decrative pot do you think those pots will be big enough? The plant is so small I figured they would look cute in those pots. I'm not sure how big they are suppose to get.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I have four of fairy snaps, all in bloom and all in 4 inch pots. I guess I could pot them into something more attractive . . .

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I just looked those up, didn't know they were a perennial but I have no sun that is moist lol I'll have to find a spot for them and plant them in the ground or I could just keep them in the pot I guess, they are cute little flowers :) That will be pretty when it fills out!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

wow, lala_Jane VERY NICE!!!! Congrats to you...I love the blues :))))

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Did we get the amber waves gaillardia from this swap? I have some seedlings and can't find a picture of them does anyone know what they look like? I figure they were new seeds because I had such good germination lol

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I got gaillardia, but I don't think it was Amber Waves. Did we order gaillardia from Stokes or did it come in a swap?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Every time I look it up I get Amber Wheels and the coral bell Amber Waves so I was just wondering what color it was going to be, they are gaillardia because the seedlings look like that plant, I don't know where I got these seeds from lol

I'm getting ready today to plant the 'ring of fire' sunflowers from this swap :) I bet those are going to be pretty! I may actually get some seeds from it at the end of the season, I didn't get to feed the finches this year because of the cats, the mommy loves to kill birds and leave them on the front porch so didn't want to take that chance with my finches so I'm actually getting to see blooms on my sunflowers that the birds planted for me this year, first time in eight years lol
