Well, that's inspirational.

Michaela, we definitely need to see pics. Your containers sound great! I can't make up my mind on mine. But you're right...things are going to have to get planted or potted up. And I don't believe in doing things twice. It almost seems like we are safe from that last frost, and yet...

I'm still looking for the $%^$#^&() cord that let's me upload pictures to the computer!!!!!

I want to show you the containers, my make-shift "greenhouse" my itty bitty zinnias and all the stuff splaid across the driveway!

I made a mistake today . . . . I went to Walmart, Lowes, and a local nursery looking for fertilizer for my rhododendrons (DH decided to give them some lime while he was applying lime to the lawn; he simply presumed it must be good for all plants!).

Anyway, I saw all these fabulous plants for sale - all at least three times the size of mine . . . sigh (and I won't even discuss these itty bitty perenials and poppies that are just germinating . . . . )

I keep telling myself that by July, the annuals at least will look fabulous and in three years the perennials will be worth $12 each . . . .

I did escape with only the fertilizer. Gasoline at $3.41 a gallon does that to you.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Michaela

Oh, I am in the same boat! I look at all the gigantic things at the garden center and then come home to my stunted things and wonder why I even bother!

Can't wait to see your pots, though...they sound really pretty.

Suzy

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

OMG! If even you suffer from disappointment, what hope is there for the rest of us, Suzy????

Now I know from last year, how extraordinary everything will be in July . . . we just have to support each other during this crisis of the spirit. We must have faith! (the alternative is that we win the lottery and can buy whatever we want ^_^)

Currently, it looks like I have about 15 Veronica Sunny Border Blue (I didn't even sow all the seeds!). So, how ridiculous is this - I already have six that I can subdivide for the Terrace! I guess I will pot up the little guys and give them as gifts when they get bigger

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Michaela, You will love that plant, though....one of the bloomingest I've ever seen. In fact, it doesn't change much the whole summer and is just 'there"

Suzy

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

None of my Veronicas came up. Gonna have to try again. I think I have a few seeds left somewhere. lol I just lightly covered them, was that correct? I may have overwatered the seeds when it was cool weather, and they probably drowned and rotted.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Grampapa - I feel so much better seeing your petunia. That is exactly the color of my Supercascade Lilacs. My Salvia viridis came up gangbusters via WS, but I'm not too sure on the penstemons and veronicas - still keeping an eye on those.

Seandor - put down that plant and step away from the window....... I just got back from picking up some potting soil and had to literally remind myself time and again - don't pick up any plants....it became a mantra...

All we have to do is start ours indoors in December and they'll be big and fat and sassy this time next year :)

dryad, I was just looking at all your pots of seedlings. : ) I think you need some more. lol

I'm planting as fast as I can, and still have plenty to go. What was I thinking when I joined up with you gals? Is it still cold up there? It's 82 here. (snicker) I now pronounce Spring for Indiana, get those plants in the ground. : )

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

BUWAHAHAHAHA!! And here I was worried that I wasn't starting more! Seriously though, I am about to start a second round of seeds in the basement so I can have some June/July stuff to roll out. I've already foisted a tomato on someone!!

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

I go outside and say, DO NOT plant anymore seeds. Then, I come in here and read, and I go back outside and plant more seeds. It's a lost cause. I'm sick, I tell ya, SICK. They will have to pry seeds out of my hands at the morgue. I just know it. : )

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Lucy, you're a riot! That's exactly how I feel.

Today is a GREAT DAY! We finally have been approved for permanent residency! This is great 'cause my work visa ends in August and can't be renewed.

Did you hear me giving a HUGE sigh of relief?????

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

That is wonderful news. : ) No more worrying. Now, you can just relax, and concentrate on your beautiful garden. YIPPEE! : )

Yep . . . only took 4 years! It is a great relief. ^_^

Seandor, I have flowers on my mini purple petunias!!!

(I chose this thread because I think the seeds were add ons to the Stoke's order that Seandor purchased for herself)

Plus I wanted to see that cool container picture again....I love it and I have none of those plants except the purple petunias. Durn it!

Suzy

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes! I now have some blossoms as well - the blooms are tiny but cute

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, all-- I'm lurking a bit here and enjoying the chat. LOL Just had to say I feel your pain/worry about the tiny WS seedlings after visiting the garden centers! So far I have been a good girl and haven't bought a thing at the nurseries, but I just saw a thread on the ORV forum that WVDaisy is thinking about doing a small co-op from Terra Nova Nurseries and I may have to succumb to that one!

Seandor--I am so happy for you that the permanent residency has been approved. I know that's not easy to get these days! Congratulations.

Illoquin, Dryad and LeBug-- why don't you come down to Cincy for the RU first weekend in June? The picnic location is close to my house and you can come over here and refresh before you head back to Indy. It's only a 2 hour drive. A pretty one too.

Blueglancer, I had to laugh about your comment "no more seeds", then you read what everyone's doing on Dave's and run outside and sow more! Me, too. You are all a bunch of enablers. And you all set pretty high standards to keep up with!

I wonder if the Betty Ford Clinic has a program for garden addicts. Maybe we can get a DG discount!? I'll call 'em--The place is like a spa but nicer, and it has nice flower gardens, too (cuttings, anyone?!) (-:

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Tab, I don't know how you do it. I have to fight my steering wheel every time I come close to a nursery. Now, you tell us that there might be a co-op from Terra Nova Nurseries. Now, who is the enabler? Huh? Huh? lol : )
~Lucy

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I was thinking about it, but I can't. I'll be gone the weekend before digging daffs in Michigan and Mr. Clean might have a hissy fit if I go two weekend in a row.

However, if you are able to root a cutting of a purple lilac with a long panicle, I would be highly interested ;)

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Look over on the Ohio River Valley Forum for the TNN co-op info. Some nice things for very cheap! I will pick up your stuff and take it up to you or mail it.

Why a whole weekend? Just drive down for the afternoon. I drive up to Indy at noon to shop at Nordstrom and come home before dinner. Bring DH along. He can hang around with my DH or they can play golf while we schmooze.

I want that same lilac with the long panicles. Mine are all so short. I remember from childhood big puple lilac bouquets that were stunning, or is that my imagination?

I am discovering so many more kinds of plants I wish I had sown seeds for... although my garden is full up pretty much. )-:

Wrightie, If you're still reading, there is a thread in the CG foum about a lady who wants to build a patio like yours. The corner one. You should post your photo.

Tab, Nope, they were long panicles at the end of each and every branch! Smelled heavenly, too!

Is that a hibiscus or malva in your photo? Do you have hibiscus blooming now? I thought it didn't bloom until June or July. What kind is it?

This is the first Mother's Day I can ever remember where I do not have enough flowers to make an enormour flower bouquet. I vividly remember Crab apples in the early 1980s, Parrot Tulips,

I don't really want enough TNN plants to skew the results of the survey, but I'll put it on watch and if Heuchera Lime Rickey or Heucherella Sunspot are chosen, I can help fill out the flat with like 5 plants. Not enough to even worry about.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Yes, that is a hibiscus, but no it's not blooming. That collage was originally for the seeds, bulbs, and cuttings I have to swap at the ORV RU trade post.

The hibisucs is called 'Plum Crazy' by Flemings in Iowa. I really like it.

My crabapples are finished. Magnolia is about done. I've got iris coming on strong now. And one bachelor button (I think maybe), it's a cornflower in bloom.

Nothing from seed to speak of except my little white mystery flower that may very well be a weed but I like it.

I am planting out some of my seedlings today if it gets a bit drier. They need to go into the ground since they are dying under my care in the peat pots.

This is what I've got blooming plus some iris:

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ooh, lots of pretty photos! You've got that bicolor lilac, I should remember the name because I've admired pics of it often enough... something Sensation?... anyway, the big question for me is, how sweet/strong is its scent?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Article from "Fine Gardening" about lilacs and fragrance:

http://www.taunton.com/finegardening/plants/articles/lilacs-time-for-fresh-look.aspx

Critter--I just went out to smell the "Sensation" lilac and stuck my nose right into it since it's still small and only a few blooms on it now. The fragrance seemed strong and florid to me (although the article above says it has light fragrance). Then I went around to 3 other lilacs of different cultivars and smelled. Some were light and delicate. Others spicey. None were as strong to me as Sensation, though. Sorry I don't know the names of my lilacs any more. I got them about 4 years ago and they were just twigs (from Spring Hill--one of my first plant purchases for this house). They have been slow growers for me and the deer regularly chomp on them so they are only about 4 feet tall and kind of straggley.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Lilacs take a while to get established, with or without pruning by deer. Thanks for letting me know that one smells as pretty as it looks! I shop for lilacs with my nose. :-)

That's a good article on lilacs... thanks for the link!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I am a happy camper tonight . . . finally finished the last of the grading . . . now I can concentrate on planting things for two days, then we fly to Vancouver for 2 weeks. I hope we make it back before really hot weather starts!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, good, Seandor, just in time for the weekend! Do you have a lot of helpers? At least a few?

Suzy

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Hey everyone, sorry for the long silence, but clients rolled over me. I was all set to get caught up yesterday and got nailed with a migraine - a complete waste of a perfectly good day! I was even going to be a good girl and go weed a client's back yard for her veggie garden, but begged off for a couple days. It's supposed to be nice here and then rain tomorrow, so I want to get some plants into my own yard - LOL!

Congratulations Seandor - that's truly wonderful news!!

Here's a shot of the supercascade lilac petunias that are REALLY tired of sitting in the greenhouse, so I have to get them into a container today.

Thumbnail by dryad57
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, dryad, sorry about the migraine... mine have been mostly under control the last few months, but I can sure sympathize about wasted days! It'll be easier to weed after the rain... that's what I've been telling myself, LOL.

I have lilac petunias blooming in a flat that really need to be potted up also... I think I'll harden them off this week and get them into window box planters. :-)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

GUILT ROCKS!!!!!!!!! ^_^

DH and I did practically EVERYTHING in creating the terrace gardens - DH rototilled, and then a crew from the city park and recreation department raked some of the clods out and put a proper edge on the gardens. Then DH raked it even more, removing even more clods. He then formed the paths.

Then it was my turn to plant lots and lots and lots of itty bitty annuals (including lots of zinnias!) A couple of neighbours came over and helped for a few minutes . . . .

But everyone LOVES the new gardens! And they have been giving me money! One woman gave me $100. to buy shrubs and perennials! Two other people gave me $50 each. Others have given twenty bucks or so. . . . and everyone smiles and waves to me!

I don't have any pictures only because I have been way to busy! and tomorrow at 4:30 am we start our journey to British Columbia to see our eldest daughter.

So assuming that everything doesn't die in the next two week . . or isn't totally overrun with weeds, I will take pictures and post them.

I am a happy camper!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Whoa! WTG! I am so sorry you didn't have any volunteers, though. I was sort of hoping it would be like block party or something.

Were you able to mulch it? I guess mulch wasn't in the budget, was it?

Suzy

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

That's excellent news Seandor!!! I can hardly wait to see the pics....I wonder if you could get folks to each "sponsor" a bag of mulch for the area?? My petunias are going in the containers today - too much rain and wind the past few days and I didn't want them to wash out or get all beat up (it even hailed here...), and of course, the good days were in someone else's yard. But not this morning - it's all mine for my garden - which, of course, is why I'm on the computer - ROTFL!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

There are way too many little plants for any mulch! This fall I hope to take out the annuals and replace them with shrubs and perennials - mulch with leaves for the winter and get decorative mulch from the city in the spring!

Weather in Victoria is grey and overcast.

I am going to the Buchart Gardens and I am going to buy seeds there!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Seandor sounds like your gardens are a success! I'm so glad for you, good job! Have a great trip 8^)

Robin, good to see you here too, so glad you are getting to work on your beds for a change lol It's wet and windy but I'm pulling weeds the only good thing about this day and oh yes getting some plants outside with the overcast. I think it's going to be like this for a couple of days.

Wind, he's so pretty! I have about four ornimental peppers and really shoud plant them, they are getting buds for the peppers now and they aren't much bigger than those :) I like the variegated one that I had because it had some pink in it too and can't wait to see the f. blue one cause I think it's suppose to get taller. I have this problem of wanting to put everything out front lol Can't do that and hate to put them out back where no one will see them. Wish I had more sun out front!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

ooooo - I LOVE ornamental peppers!! I'm checking in to let you know that I've not got a darn thing potted up or put in my yard yet, but darnit, this weekend is MINE! My clients are laughing at me, they know my yard is the Cobbler's Child - LOL! I'm off to finish weeding out a spot for a veggie garden, and to do battle with a wildly overgrown wisteria (it's about 50' up in a beautiful beech, not sure how we're going to deal with that part of it.....).

Hope y'all have a great sunny day!!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Sounds like you need to climb a tree Robin :)

I don't have anything potted up yet either been too busy trying to get these weeds under control which I don't think is ever going to happen!

Enjoy your weekend and be careful in that beach no matter how you decide to do it, are you getting rid of it or just trimming it? I think I will get a few plants in the ground this weekend out front and pray for one calm day to spray the back bed and the new herb garden part.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Heya gang, quite here so I figure we're all dealing with plants rather than seedlings. As for that wisteria, it's up in a 60 year old beech tree that's dying, so I think we're just going to take the whole tree out.

FINALLY got the supercascade lilac petunias potted up and on the front porch, and they ended up being right next to an iris that mimics their color - yippee!! Now to keep an eye out for seeds - LOL! The caraway came up and is doing fine, although I won't get seeds until next year. Now I MUST get over to the other thread and catch up with you!!
