Found it last friday on a young leaf of my Acer japonicum.
It was sitting still for a very long time, so it was easy to take pictures..
CLOSED: Could this be Chrysotoxum cautum ?
I had it completely wrong!!!! It seems to be Epistrophe eligans, I got the identification from the diptera site;
http://diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=5&thread_id=12464
and it seems to be wright;

I meant to get back to this one but have been busy, and I forgot!
I see you have become a member, I haven't posted any there for a long time as I lost my pics! Plenty of dipterists there, and the only way to get a proper ID on many flies.
I feel embarrassed I got it sooo.. wrong, wallaby! I have been once more too hasty in conclusion! Sigh..
Been very busy too the last days.. It has been real summer here for more than three days, yesterday was more than 30 ° in the sun !!!but today it was cooler but still relatively mild , raining almost the whole day with some sun for a few minutes once in a while that created kind of magical diamants on twigs and leaves...
Yes I'm amazed at the helpfulness of the people of the diptera site.
That was my first attempt to send a pict. to their site, but made a fool out of myself trying and trying again, not really understanding the technical details acquired. Luckily they have erased it all!
Lol, look and look again is my motto. Some flies are so close in looks to each other it requires putting tehm under a microscope, then we can only hope for a genus, sometimes only a Family! It can make you feel a little depressed, lol, they are only flies.
We have had a couple up to 20C, today it was cooler but pleasant, one good rain only. It makes us feel human, it feels good to see progress in the garden even if it does my head in thinking of what I have to do yet!
