Hey Todd,
Thanks for the pics. Spring is a bit further advanced in Chi-town than it is in Mpls (which is normal). We are expecting high temps in the 30s and 40s this weekend. Winter will just not loosen its tight grip on us.

Ha! Finally got a chance to load some pics up from a faster computer.

Here's a freak of nature for Todd...

...and here's what it wants to become.

Nice. What is it???

How'd you like this crawling up your back?

OK - it's Quercus dentata 'Pinnatifida', the ubiquitous cutleaf Daimyo or Japanese Emperor oak.

Really?!?

There's all of one 40+ year old specimen here in KY. Common as hen's teeth, they are.

Another oak - there are lots of these on the ground at work. I wonder if the lack of rain here is making them fall off.

There's a lot to master in this posting photos process. I appreciate your patience. A better Spring budding photo of the cornus alternifolia.

Claypot:

That looks like a twig girdler working on your oaks. That's a relatively common pest that nibbles around the twig, which then falls as you have observed.

bacarney:

Keep at it. Eventually, it'll be like falling off a log...

Is that a Cotinus in your first-ever posted pic?

I think we may be done with the snow here, finally, so I went out today to see how things came through our cold snap last weekend. Here's Aronia melanocarpa 'Autumn Magic'

Some kind of white-flowered lilac - I don't know the variety.

Euonymus alatus - I know they can be invasive, but I do like the wings.

Finally, a Hydrangea paniculata 'Unique', that's barely starting.

Does anyone know how you get a hold of a unique hydrangea?

Thanks, all, for posting the pictures of new growing things when its barren in Minnesota - it helps to get through to spring

Yes, thanks for posting the pics, everyone. Spring is really, really late here in MN. Everything should be leafed out by now, but most plants are still in tight-bud, with a few exceptions. Snow is expected again for this weekend, but not enough to accumulate. I am hoping that the trees have leaves by the end of May, but I'm not holding my breath.

Ginkgo biloba 'summer rainbow'. If it doesn't get any branches this year, I might have to change the name to 'lightning bolt'.

Very nice. No bunnies? (no wire cages to protect against the little beasts?)

Gosh, I haven't thought about that. Any particular trees they favor?

Here's the one I've been most anxious about after the brutal winter. Taxodium distichum 'cajun snowfall'. Looks like he made it....

The bunnies go out of their way to get to a ginkgo.

I have found that bunnies will eat anything and they sometimes just cut the plant off to try it and then leave the stem there.

I keep all of my small trees protected until they get big enough to fend for themselves. Spring and summer is not too bad, because of all of the fresh grass, etc., but come winter, I would get 3' high chicken wire to put around each plant or group of plants. I used 2' chicken wire this winter and the bunnies just walked over the top of the wire cage due to all of the snow and chomped on a bunch of my stuff in pots. I am not a happy-camper.

The little beasts all-but-destroyed a B&B Fagus sylvatica 'Asplenifolia' I purchased in Wisconsin last summer. I hope it re-sprouts this spring - but with this cold weather it might be July before I can tell if it survived or not.

You'll need to post a pic of that 'Cajun Snowfall' once it leafs out completely. I saw that offered by S&S, but it was 50.00 for a one-gallon plant.

I have had bad luck with S&S stuff recently. Some things don't survive for even a few weeks after receiving them and this winter I lost almost everything I purchased from them last summer. My other stuff is fine, so it's not the conditions that are killing the plants. I'll just need to wait and see if anything sprouts after it warms up.
