Tiny Owl

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Finally got a picture of a one of the little fellas that startled us one night. He? was one of three perched in the tree (in front of a tree light) next to our driveway, and they cast a shadow 6 ft tall on the concrete.
The mockingbirds were having a fit, and kept him occupied while I ran and grabbed a camera.

I posted this on the "sticky" too. New so I don' know exactly what that means..

Thank you for the Welcome!
If I can grab the camera (new at that, I forget I have it) I will try to picture the two types of red-headed woodpeckers we have had in One tree for the past 10 years. Last year it was the Huge one.(Very striking colors black/white/red and as long as your arm and the babies sound like a chain saw when being fed!The adults sound like something out of the Jungle!) One year the smaller one set up shop in the same tree about 3 ft below the larger ones nesting hole. It was one continuous round of fights and feeding. Now that I have the camera, of course, the larger one didn't nest here this year.

Whozzat...
Oh, I'd love to see an owl. I hear them in the woods next to my house so I know they're there... but have yet to see them.
it sounds like one of the red-headed WPs you have might actually be a pileated wooodpecker. Lucky you! They are quite a sight. I have one that visits from time to time and it takes my breath away each time. They look like something out of the Land of the Lost. From the way you describe its size, sound and eating habits, I think this might be what you have...
Look familiar?

That is it! The striking white under the wings when it takes off is beautiful to see. I know when they are back. You hear them long before you see them. Thanks for the link! Showed the pic to hubby just to be sure. Yeap! That's it.

That's true. They don't appear very often, but you can sure hear them. They do make a striking sight when they fly over.

Very cool! We saw a screech owl at the birds of prey show, and I've been thinking about making a nesting box for them...

Southeastern, CT(Zone 6a)

We put up a nesting shelf this year, but no takers yet. I've got mice in the garage for any screech that wants 'em!

whozzat, congrats on the pileated! I saw one many years ago and will never forget that sight. They seem too big to be real.

They had one at the Winter Park Garden Show a couple of weeks back - really lovely to see, I haven't uploaded that yet.
