I've got a few seedlings at the point now that they need to be transplanted. I started them in jiffy pellets, and they are now almost at the cover. I don't want to just remove the cover, because I've got others in there that are just starting, or haven't germinated, yet.
Do I move them to a slightly larger pot until they are a bit bigger, or should I move them straight to the pot I want them in. A couple of little 2" high seedlings would look lost in a pot 12" across, but it would save the risk of any transplant shock later.
They are in a 10'X10' greenhouse now, but shelf space is at a premium.
Any ideas??
Thanks,
Deb
Transplanting Seedlings
I move the ones that sprout into a slightly bigger pot first..there will be no shock just taking the pellet anddropping it into a pot...and covering it to soil height... Gordon
Deb -- we're obviously the same zone ... especially since we only live about 20 min apart... and i too am getting ready. Mine are quite tall already.... I'm still concerned that the nights are too cool, and was going to ask if they are ready to be "hardened". I put them out in the sun today, and they are currently on my front porch with some other seedlings, including Hyacinth Vine .... I'm thinking of leaving them out side tonight... but the 'Maters are coming in.
I just checked the long range forecast... and tonite will be about 46°, but 50's after that for a few days. The Mid40's make me a bit nervous ... but i would think after 3 days and nights outside, they should be able to handle that.
my MG's are currently in 4" peat pots.

I have a plastic 10'X10' greenhouse set up in the backyard. All my trays of seeds are out there, and I have a few MG's that have germinated so far. There are two that need to be moved out of the jiffy tray thingie with the clear dome, but I just don't know if I should put them into the big pot they will end up in eventually, or if I should go for something smaller until the plants get a little bigger. Whatever they go into, they will have to stay in the greenhouse for probably another month.
I have several trays of seeds out there, plus at least a dozen oriental lilies that are potted up, and some phlox I got from a co-op, and some mums I was sent from Alabama. So far, everyone seems happy. I open it up during the day, and close it at night, and it seems to stay warm enough.
I absolutely cannot grow anything in the house, but this greenhouse has allowed me to get my seeds started a little earlier than I would have outside.
I WS most of my seeds... only second year doing that.. .but i have 1 heat mat ... so i start a few things in the house.
but MG's do winter sow very easily as i did tons of them last year.
this year i did Split Personality and Star of Yelta in the house... and they are at least 18" tall.
I haven't winter sown anything. Just set up the greenhouse about a month ago, the oriental lilies I had were sprouting and had to be potted up, and the co-op phlox needed potting, too, and they have done great. 2-3 weeks ago I put 6 trays of seeds out there, all annuals, to get a jump on the season. They'll stay in there for another 3 to 4 weeks.
