Spring Hoya Swap 2008?
OH YES!!! Sugarplum Hoyas dancing in my head!!!
So, question ?? Should I wait to cut the cuttings until time to ship out,
or cut them and put them in water, or start rooting them ??
Seems like I should wait until time to ship but just wanted to make
sure. This is my first swap ! Yayyyy...
Well...for me, I will send cuttings!
By the way...I have no trouble receiving hoyas I already have.... There is a Hawaiian custom of always taking a 'gift' when visiting...(from the days when guests would bring their own food to not cause scarcity for their hosts)....and I love sharing my passion for Hoyas with others. They become special in that way....
Carol
Will plants going from the Mainland to the Islands and back require one of those phyto certificates?
You folks keep mentioning epis, what qualifies here. I wouldn't mind getting in but I have no Hoyas, I do have some nice Bromeliads and other things though.
It is very simply to ship to Hawaii...just don't write all over the box "CONTAINS LIVE PLANTS' but even then it is likely to go unnoticed. Shipping OUT of Hawaii is another box of cats!!!! It is not easy to understand (I kinda do but kinda don't)...but Hawaii Ag. is driven by the rules of California Ag - and they follow the rules to the letter. None of the other states do, and they really should but who has the manpower? i know there are some areas of Florida where nurseries can't ship to Hawaii (????) and Oregon requires some wierd stuff....IF you want to be legal.
Who wants to be legal?
PAULA....Ag. here says to go to the Ag. office at the Airport.

Looking at the above posts, it seems like it might be okay with most people to receive some non-Hoyas.
How about if we say that Hoya and Dischidia are the best choice, but for those without a variety of them plants with similar cultivation needs are okay? How about Orchids, Bromeliads and Epis only?
What say ye?
Excellent choices, Mark. I'm good with that if everyone else is.
Barb
Me, too. villaluna
Sounds good to me.
If Broms are ok, I'm in, and I promise only to take 1 or 2 cuttings, and not fill the box with broms.
Pretty much anything is fine with me as long as it is healthy. Lotsalilys, I think you might be thinking of a round robin. I'm pretty sure that this is a swap where everyone is assigned a name of someone to just send one box of plants to. There is no need to only take 1or 2. What ever is in the box is yours to keep. At least that is my understanding.
Doug
Oh ok, I was confused, but I got it now. This sounds great!
I would like to participate.
Mark, I have a question for you. I have never participated in one of these and really appreciate being a part of it. When my swap "partner" is assigned, is it okay to D-mail them and let them know what Hoya and Dischidia I have available to strike cuttings from and ask which three they would like? Seems to me it would eliminate duplicating something they might already have.... or prefer one over another if a choice were available. I don't want to open a can of worms here. It's just a thought I had and wanted to ask.
Thanks again for organizing this for all of us.
Barb
Are we limited to sending 3 items?
I want to be your trade buddy!! lol villaluna
::raises hand::
I wanna play with you guys!!!
sadly, all my gifts from last year kicked the bucket, but I'm always willing to kill, er, try again!!!!!
Barb, it would probably be more practical to do it that way, but a lot less fun. Sort of like asking what someone wants for their birthday?
LOL! Gotcha! Surprise it is, then. ;)
Barb
Repeating question: are we limited in the ## of cuttings we can send or is it the number of choices of genera we can send????
Limits? We don't need no stinkin' limits.
Good question Carol, especially for those that don't know it's not a "limit" type thing.
The way it was done last year is that you can send however many cuttings you'd like to send. NO LIMITS. But don't feel bad if you only have 3!!! The fun is the surprise! Also, if you want to throw in fun gifts (ex: the dream catcher that Carol got), go for it!
Gabi
Good....that's what I thought!!! Just a note to all....Bob love oatmeal cookies with raisins...just in case you haven't any hoyas!!!
Mark...you are a dear to start this up...it is wonderful to feel BACK to friendship, sharing, supporting and FUN.

Okay, the signup thread has been updated with all the names I have found so far. If I missed anybody- sorry! It was an accident. Just let me know and I will add you.
