Spring Hoya Swap 2008?

San Francisco, CA

((Now 100% RottenEggRobin free!!!))

Now that spring is sprung, what does everybody think of having a spring swap?
I know that Becky on Epiforums has a spring round robin in the works, and a lot of people here are members there, so perhaps we could do a straightforward swap here, where each person sends a number of cuttings to one other person?
Let's hear opinions! Who's game?

There is always a lot of discussion about "rules". I don't particularly like rules, but I would suggest just one:
The swap would be about sharing and community building, so how about everyone who has, oh, let's say 3 different kind of Hoya or Dischidia (any variety, any species, carnosa is great!!!) can participate. How does that sound?
I hosted a swap two years ago- if someone else wants to organize this one, by all means say so! It's really pretty easy. If no one has the time, I will do it again.
Go!

Sounds good to me, Mark. I think this forum could use a dose of friendship and what better way than a Hoya swap! You did a great job last time and if you are willing, you have my vote.

I'd participate! We could use some friendship building and fun around here! Mark, you have my vote to organize it, if you are willing.

I've never done a round robin before, but it sounds like so much fun! Please count me in. (you will explain the rules, right? lol) villaluna

Sighhh.... I wish I could participate. Living in Hawaii isn't ALL that :(
Far away, and agric. rules....

San Francisco, CA

Well, it looks like there is some interest- good!
I would say everyone is welcome to participate IF they have at least three different Hoya or Dischidia to trade, whether they are labeled or not. If you don't have at least three, it probably isn't worth mailing a package with a single cutting in it, you know? I think the cheapest rate for a USPS box is about $9, and so...
Everybody who is interested and qualifies, please post here and I will start a list of the names.

Moon, VA(Zone 7a)

Mark, could you explain how large/long does the cutting have to be? thanks, villaluna

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

Mark,
A couple of questions for you:

(1) Is this a round robin or a swap where names are assigned for exchange of cuttings?

(2) Is it open to residents of other countries?

San Francisco, CA

Villaluna, cuttings should be as large as you can spare.
If you are cutting from young plants, at least two nodes (groups of leaves) for larger leaved plants, maybe 10 nodes or so for very small leaved plants, like H. lacunosa or bella. If you have larger, mature plants and can spare a couple feet of Hoya, that would make someone very happy!
The stem of the cutting should not be very green and tender still, those portions of vine don't generally root well. Very old, woody parts of stems don't root well either. The stems of the cutting should be old enough to have mature, full sized leaves.
Probably the best age for taking a cutting is into portions of stem that developed last year?

San Francisco, CA

Oh, those are good questions too.
US only, sorry. We had a lot of discussion on that point before, and the consensus seemed to be that it was too risky sending plants across borders without phytosanitary certificates. The packages could be destroyed, and there are potential fines for violating the rule.
I was thinking a straight out swap? My reason is that there is already an Epiforums round robin in the works, so this would be something different for those who are participating in both trades.
So each person would get a randomly assigned name to send to, and would receive cuttings from a different, also random person.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I think a trade sounds like a swimmingly good idea!!!! ^_^

I am in. Paula...put them in a box and send them!!!! Take the box, wrappings, cuttings down to Hawaiian Ag. and they will stamp them as clean....easy. Or send them over to me and i will ship them out with my stamp!!!

I think whatever you think is "friendly" is fine to send...I wouldn't mind epis...... :>))))

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I particiapted in the last one and had a blast...so count me in Mark!

Question?Would small rooted plants and already rooted cuttings be alright too? I have a few I started over the winter. For the ones already potted would I just wash all the dirt from the roots and wrap and send that way?

Thanks for hosting this swap^_^
Nancy

Moon, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok, I can do that. Please count me in! villaluna

San Francisco, CA

Nancy, I think that would be fine.
I should have asked this before I spoke- would it be alright with people here if there were other types of plants were offered from folks who want to participate but don't have enough Hoya? I'll leave it up to you all to chime in, and then I will count the votes.
Rooted plants should be fine- be careful if you are sending them to California, Texas or Hawaii though. All of the dirt must be removed from the roots, and even then if Hawaii USDA finds it it's over!
Yes, Paula, take Carol up on her offer. Are you in?

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Mark....in that case I will rinse..rinse..and rinse some more..they will be squeaky clean^_^

I do have a few dischidias and epis so I wouldn't have a problem adding them to the mix..but whatever everyone else decides is fine with me...

Moon, VA(Zone 7a)

I have no problem with other plants; in fact, I think it's great to be inclusive (I love all plants). I just want to be sure that everyone is on the same page so that there's no disappointment. Thanks, villaluna

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Actually...cuttings are the best to send to California. No one bothers in Hawaii but cuttings are great.... Hey....this is going to be fun!

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

Mark,
I would like to participate in the swap.

North Central, ID(Zone 6a)

Yes !! Count me in ^_^

Knoxville, TN

Epi's or other aroids get my vote too. This is totally in the spirt of friendship and healing, regrowth and renewal.
On a side note, my Son is getting married the first week of May. They have chosen to get married on the beach at sunrise and we are planning to make a week long celebration on the beach. My DH Paul has agreed to take care of our animals and plants and he is a fisherman with a brown thumb. With any luck, I will still have a plant or 2 left when I return!

I'm in!!!

As for plants other than hoya - do you mean that people would be able to send different plants *in addition* to hoya cuttings? That would be completely fine. I personally don't collect any other plants besides hoya, but if an epi cutting or something was in the box, that's fine. Last year I sent a few succulents and whatnot in addition to a bunch of hoya cuttings. Now I have nothing but hoya and a spider plant - I had to get picky because of space issues, and of course I chose hoya!

I'm so excited to do this again!! Last year was really fun!

Gabi

Gee, and here's me way up in "untradable" Canada with 117 varieties of hoya, quite a few of which I could make someone very happy with. Hmmmm...sounds like an all-Canadian swap might be in order. Any Canadian takers? (Silly question, eh Leanne?)

Hey Mark - I'd love to join!

I hope it's still keeping the bad dreams away Carol ... 8-)
