Potted Lemon Tree

Ottawa, ON

Hello,

I am sorry if I have posted in the wrong forum. If so, please point me in the right direction.

I have a small potted lemon tree (less than 2 feet high) and noticed the leaves have a sticky substance on them and also see some clear sticky drops in places. I do not see scale or aphids on my plant. What could be the cause?

Thanks,
K

Do all the leaves have the sticky substance? Using a good magnifying glass check the underside of the leaves. Honeydew comes from sucking insects. Can you see any other damage?

Put the pot into the shower or tub and scrub the leaves with a soft cloth and a dilute soap solution and rinse. That washes off the sticky mess and helps to get rid of most if not all aphids and soft bodied insects at least for a while. See if the sticky stuff returns.

Thanks Bettydee.

Yes, all the leaves had the sticky stuff on them. I looked really close and did find a few scale bugs on there but didn't think so few could leave sticky stuff on all the leaves.

I wiped every single leaf and branch with warm water and paper towels but if it happens again I will do it as you suggest with soap and water.

I had found a lady bug flying around my house and read somewhere they like to eat aphids so put her (him?) on the tree as well.

Dear K,
I think you got some good advice, just wanted to let you know there is a tropical fruits forum and also a fruit and nuts forum.

Ok thankyou. I will check those forums out.
