Is there a site where I can see a good picture of where the seeds are on the plant,so I take the right things off. I took what I thought were seeds from something and then found out it wasn't. Don't want to do that again.!!! I know there are places that show the seeds and the seedpods, but I need to see exactly where to look for them on the plant.
Thanks, ya'll will save me a whole of of seed sowing with something other than the seed
Where are the seeds on the plant
It's a bunch. That's why I thought I'd find a site, cause it would be a 20 inch post.!!! Some of the ones like oleander I could tell by the pod, cause it's not easy to miss I've been to the site with pictures of seeds pods and seeds. They just don't have a picture of the whole plant and where the seed pods are.
Lorraine ... try this one

Thanks!! I've been there but didn't really dig enough!!
yea -- and sometimes i find the images not clear enough ... but it's the most extensive site i think.
Thanks, I've already found some I can use there!!
If you look where the flower bloomed, your seeds will be there. A seed pod is just an ovary formed by the bloom. Some plants form pods, others do not, but they will all be located where the flower was. If you dead-head flowers, you are picking off your seeds, so you have to let them get scruffy and dried looking. Seeds will not be ripe until the flower head is dried and dead. If you pick them while still green, you will not be getting mature seeds, so they won't germinate
After a season of closely observing your plants, you should be able to determine what the seeds look like, even if you've never seen one for that plant. Seeds are pretty universal packages. It just takes a little time and observation. You'll do fine.
Thanks, I have been able to find some, just not many!!!. I was always looking for them to be like marigolds, so when I learned they weren't I could find them better. The ones I have the problems with are like hosta, lilies, and stuff like that. I can't seem to ever get to them on coleus either, but I'm learning. Learn a little more with each plant.
Hosta seeds are generally black and flat. Coleus looks like teeny tiny poppy [like on a hotdog bun]
Not too sure about lily seeds... as i've only grabbed day lilies ... and found them to be high gloss black and sort of round-ish.
sometimes posting an image of a seed will net you an answer. I've done that before when i wasn't sure what it was.
What's crazy is that I know what they all look like, just can't ever find them. I think the coleus I've figured out. Isn't it on the part that flowers.?
Yes, coleus has a 'spike' with lots of little flowers along it. the seeds form where the flowers have bloomed.
here is an image of hosta seed pods... they will turn brown, and crack open. you can harvest the whole pod, or wait til it cracks, then grab the seeds.

OH --forgot to add... the day lilies will have pod like things too.
Ok, now I know where to look. Has the one in the picture already bloomed or is it getting ready too.l Do they reseed? I take them up and halve them, but I've got some that I know I didn't plant there. Unless I was asleep at the time. Which would probably be possible. lol
That is a real help !! I knew those coleus seeds had to be somewhere around that spike. Course you can root them in water, so I guess don't need the seeds. Well, they are good in trades
Going to look at a lily
I've only had hostas 1 year now... and the pods develop after it's done blooming ... at least that is the way it looked to me. Same with lilies. After my flowers 'died', the pods were noticeable -- then they got dry, and i grabbed/harvested the seeds.
coleus i've never done... so can't help ya there.
Some of my lilies are gone and I did see some pods today, I think. Are they kind of like a bean pod.
I knew the hosta seeds were somewhere and you should have seen me last year after the blooms looking for them. Never saw them, course I could have waited too long or tried too soon!!!
Lorraine.... not all hostas produce seed pods.
and for lilies... Google "lily seed pod images" then you will get the idea.
I only have those Stella o"doro ones [i know i spelled it wrong - i always think Stella Dora, as in the cookie]
those get seed pods.... my day lilies, i have ditch lilies and burgundy ones ... never seen pods on those.
Thanks for the info . I wondered about that, cause last year on some I didn't see anything, but on others I saw what I think was a pod. But I figured it wasn't cause the other ones didn't have them. Now I know.
I have some Easter Lilies and Tiger Lilies. Do they make seeds. I actually have a bunch more, but have no idea what they are. Plant them one day, forget what they are the next. What? Be smart enough to mark them. Oh no, too much work!!! lol
I honestly don't know anything about lilies. I think they are pretty ... but not much luck in growing them... with the exception of ditch lilies [can't even kill them] I've tried Oriental lilies with not much luck... wonder why.
you could always wander over to the Lily forum -- i'm sure we have one and ask about seeds. Some of those folks are pretty serious into hybridizing.
The only way bulbs grow for me is if I just stay away. The lillies seem to be pretty tough, so I guess they are able to stay alive when I come to town. I've ordered a lot of bulbs this year, but who knows if they'll make it or not. I got some Cannas from my son's house today. My dil had them planted in the shade so that's what I did . Do you think that is ok?
All us bulb killers have to stick together. I ordered a book about bulbs, but I spend most of my time trying to find out what they are, cause it's all the latin names.
i heard from a gal that does a lot of lilies... they need sun shine. not shade. with the exception of ditch lilies.
and if you have the latin name... that is actually the best to have... just google it and other names will come up, but latin is best. IN many cases, when i order plants, they come with common name, and i'm looking up the latin name.
with common names, sometimes they will have like 5-6 common names to 1 latin name.... which can make things really confusing.
And I've noticed we call some of the plants a little different common name here and it gets confusing, especially if they are looking for a small plant and get an 8 ft one LOL
I'm getting better at the latin. When I see some of the latin names, I know the common name, I so proud!!!
