Beware of a frost in NE Texas

Paris, TX

FROST POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT
A SIGNIFICANT FROST IS POSSIBLE LATE SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY
MORNING AS A COLD HIGH PRESSURE CENTER SETTLES INTO THE REGION.
TEMPERATURES WILL FALL INTO THE 30S ACROSS MUCH OF NORTH TEXAS
SUNDAY NIGHT DUE TO VERY LIGHT WINDS AND CLEAR SKIES.
WHILE AIR TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN ABOVE FREEZING AT MOST
LOCATIONS...FROST CAN FORM AT TEMPERATURES AS WARM AS 38 DEGREES
UNDER THE RIGHT CONDITIONS. FROST CAN DAMAGE OR KILL COLD
SENSITIVE VEGETATION THAT HAS NOT BEEN PROTECTED. RESIDENTS SHOULD
PREPARE TO PROTECT ANY TENDER PLANTS THAT HAVE RECENTLY BLOOMED
OR BEEN PLANTED. COVERING THEM WITH A LIGHT BLANKET OR MOVING THEM
BENEATH A COVERED PORCH SHOULD PROVIDE ENOUGH PROTECTION FROM THIS
LATE SEASON COLD SPELL.

Thanks for warning North Texas gardeners. i just came home from Allen, Texas (near Plano). I had never realized the big difference between temperatures in North Texas and the San Antonio area. I was amazed that the crepe myrtles were just beginning to leaf out in Allen. Before my visit with my daughter, I had thought that we had some really bad storms in San Antonio. The storms in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area this past week made my think again. They were really violent and much worse than most of the storms we have in the San Antonio area. It was still really cold when I left and in the lower 90's in San Antonio when I arrived home. I had better tell my daughter to protect the plants that I planted for her when I was visiting. Thanks again and good luck with your plants.

Thank you for the warning!! I'm new at gardening & I wouldn't realize til too late! Although, my fiance heard the weather & warned me this time. But when he told me I had to protect the plants from frost....didn't realize that can happen here in East Texas in April in zone 8b. But the weather has gotten crazy everywhere! At least it's not snowing! (sorry to those, where it may be snowing...) I just want my first shot at a garden to be a success or semi-success!!! And, happy gardening to all the other gardeners here at DG!

good thing I have a big rubber tub of blankets and old sheets will be pulling them out and covering everything outside ...DH just loves me when we do that LOL

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

How far south and west do you think it'll be? I saw where it was supposed to get down to around 40 here Sunday night.

Well from what I did catch of the news on channel 7 tonight they are sounding like it will be Sunday night and Monday night and they go as far down as Jacksonville in talking about it

Paris, TX

Hopefully it won't freeze. I imagine by late this afternoon all of us with the gardening sickness will have yards that look like "trashey folks" with anything we can find to protect our treasures.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL Raggins ~ DH has often wondered what others think... I would think Oh that poor gardener. 8 ))

For some reason I thought it was going to frost last night and "trashed it out" a bit early.lol Oh well, I can think of it as a test run.lol

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

My babies are lookin' so good. Now this. The EE's have been burned 2 times already. Just now putting on a really good leaf. I don't know if I have enough blankets. Just got a small greenhouse put together but almost everything is in the ground. Over 45 years ago it snowed in late April. I remember because I had a new baby girl. (ok. that's enough. quit counting)

Do you think it would hurt to put small tea cups (the kind you buy when you are traveling with the name of the place on them) on the seeds that are just coming up like zinnia and cosmos?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch was just here. Advised not to let the glass touch the plant. Other than that , it is ok. I am going to use some plastic glasses too. Have to be creative.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I ma using sheets, blankets, rubbermaid tubs that are empty, buckets, paint tarps..DH said I better start now to get everything covered LMAO..but he will help I know and am gonna have to sue some rocks to keep things in place with the dang wind that has come up

KETK NBC 56 says:

2:00 PM Update:

**FROST ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR WESTERN COUNTIES FOR TONIGHT THROUGH 9 AM MONDAY**

Skies are mostly clear this afternoon with temperatures only warming into the low to mid 60s. More widespread frost may be found early Monday morning with even a light freeze out in the country. So take the proper precautions to protect those sensitive plants. We'll experience a warm up by the middle of next week and right now it looks like the first chance for showers or thunderstorms will be Thursday afternoon.
http://www.ketknbc.com/weather

the map they show on the site shows the warning from Shreveport to Tyler and above... lowest is Palestine then to the west back towards Dallas..Jascksonville is not in it

Thanks for the idea about the rubbermaid tubs. Just planted tropical hibiscus last week and they just about the right size.

DH asked about turning on the sprinklers when he leaves in the morning to take son to work ...thinking it would get rid of anything on them before the sun comes up but not sure if that would save anything from the frost???

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Need to water now. Tomorrow is too late.

Kilgore, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks everyone. Good ideas and very resourceful! I'm not used to normally even worrying about weather for this reason. But after all the time I've put in (and not done yet!), I have a greater appreciation for gardening now. I'm listening to all of you & protecting my precious plants!! Or I'll be back at Lowes 1st thing Monday morning!! Hehe

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

From the way the map showed on KETK it didn't' look like you (Latelybloomin77) would get hit but better safe then sorry in my book and usually out here at my place west of Tyler we are in a lil bit of a down hill so we don't get it as bad as in Tyler does.
I even took the pots some of the plants came in and put over them.

DH and DS took plastic tarps and bamboo poles and covered alot of the garden like a tent
Do ya think I need to cover the cabbage plants and peas?

as for watering he watered alot of stuff already during the day today LOL

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Cabbage and probably peas will be all right. Yes, to turning the sprinklers in the early am if it is frosty. I got an electronic thermometer and am fascinated to watch in the the am. The temp always dips at sunrise so the timing on the sprinklers would be good.

Every one tucked in? Good luck tonight!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Wasn't expecting to try out the little greenhouse until next winter. It got so hot inside, even with the vent and door open, that we borrowed the canopy from an EZ Up to cover the top. It's gonna be dandy. Everything else is covered the best we could. Did not expect another cold front this late so lots of tropicals are planted out. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't get as cold as the prediction.

Supposed to get down to 38 here tonight. Wish this Texas weather would make up its mind.

Kilgore, TX(Zone 8a)

Hoping our plants stay happy & warm!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Uh Yeah could y'all explain this to me please.....hahahaha..Here I move to Texas last July/August and I am told it usually doesn't' rain that much as it did last year from July on then I am told this last winter it was nicer then usual it is colder most of the time, March is when the last frost is and to get everything going in the garden for the first season and now this....what's up??? can't make up your minds??? ...hahahahahaha
If I didn't know any better I would almost think I was back up north in Illinois.....I'm just teasin y'all

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Mibus ~ maybe it's all your fault!!?! LOL

I stuffed Hibiscus and Brugs in the plant shelter but can't close the door tight. A wren is nesting in there. Most of the rest of the tenders are pulled up against the house under the porch roof and covered. The bloomers in beds are on their own after a good drink.

34 degrees declared for tonight and tomorrow night here.

Paris, TX

I used every sheet, pillow case, some towels, buckets I could find. I did water good first. I have done all I can do to save my peonies, tiger lillies, zinnias, cosmos, holly hocks, potatoes, and banana tree. Just hope for the best in the morning and the strenghth to clean it all up.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Raggins ~ are you getting the hard winds in Paris too?

Paris, TX

Yes but I went outside just a few minutes ago and it is beginning to stop. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it doesn't freeze. All the TV stations say it is but Acu weather and Noaa says it is not. I have been trying to decide if I need to light the heater in my greenhouse. I never took out my big ferns, nicatinia, palm trees, rubber trees and misc big pots. I have been too busy getting my seeds going.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

You are fortunate things haven't been moved out. I got started and couldn't stop. All mine were outdoors. Our weather forecast was lowered from 36 to 34 for tonight. Clear sky here so it will drop. The hummers were tanking up at dusk.

For weather, I go to wunderground.com and type in the zipcode. Pretty accurate for here...

Paris, TX

I just went to wunderground.com and have made it a favorite. Thanks.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Well...good luck to all of you up north of here...I am crossing fingers and toes that it doesn't get that cold here. We're predicted at 38-40 like Anne said but I am always colder due to being in a valley here. We are normally at least 3-4 degrees lower than in town. Unfortunately I did not have time to cover things tonight as I have a big test tomorrow and have been studying since I got home from a wedding in Houston at 6:30pm. I went out and covered the veggie garden but that was it. Everything else will just have to tough it out or croak. The seedlings I just put in will be the most vulnerable. Geez...with the late frosts/freezes these past two years I am starting to feel like we will need to wait until May-and that is what we do up north so good grief! Lol....

:) Kim

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I didn't cover anything either Kim. So if we guessed wrong we can boo hoo on each others shoulders.

Anne

Paris, TX

Just went outside and we did get the frost but it is 37 so that is good news. Forgot to turn off the sprinkler system and it goes off at 4:30 am so all the coverings will really be wet.

Kilgore, TX(Zone 8a)

Did everyone make it through last night okay? I'm hoping so.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

35 here right now....grass looks more wet than frosty but I will go out in a little bit and investigate further. Guess the weather forecasters were wrong again here...

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

32 at 6:30 this morning and I have been spraying hundreds of Brugs for hours.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh man, what a job that must be. Hopefully you are set up on a sprinkler system.

We only made it to 38 here. I haven't looked at the forecast but they said we have one more night ahead...

It frosted here, but only in a part of the garden that is prone to it. Mostly roses in that area. Like Kim said, they just look damp. The mulch looks like it's covered in icing tho (pretty if it wasn't annoying) Will take a few days to see if the rose buds are affected.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Kim there was frost on my car at 7am. We may have to get together for that boo hoo session after all.

Anne

Kilgore, TX(Zone 8a)

40 degrees here. Should I wait until 50-55 to put plants back out?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

At 40, I would uncover plants but you know, it is supposed to do the same again tonight?
