I just got a bloom from a lilac I'd been wondering about! The top died back a couple years ago, and it resprouted from the base, but I wasn't sure if it was own-root or a grafted plant. It's the same pale lavender bloom and rich scent that I remember. :-) It's put off a number of extra shoots, which I should be able to dig up with some scrap of roots to pot up. I've already potted a couple of shoots from my great-aunt Erna's favorite deep purple lilac, which my brother has spoken for, but if I can get an extra shoot or two from that one I can bring them also. Seems like there's interest in sweet-scented lilacs! :-)
Haves, wants and oh please, please help me get a....
wyldeflower, no problem on the willow oak seedling, I think! I will dig them up today and hope they survive.
Can I have one or two of your bleeding hearts?
Here's my promise list so far:
Wydleflower ---willow oak seedling
Critter---shamrocks, trailing rosemary, greek oregano
Hart----sweet woodruff, Rose BLush Mums, Willow Oak seedling
Larlienda---Shamrocks, willow oak seedlings, sweet woodruff, Brug and Dat babies
Chantell---Trailing Rosemary, purple Dat baby(ies?)
Jody, I know I was piggish about your list, do you see anything on mine you would like?
Dragonfly, I just potted up a couple of divisions of what I think is 'Hot & Spicy' Greek Oregano (I'm a bit of a collector when it comes to herbs, and we love oregano... this one is extremely peppery, and despite its being tagless, I'm pretty sure of its ID)... would that interest you?
I found the tag on my pale, yummy-scented lilac! It's 'Belle de Nancy'. I can't swear it grew back true to name, but it looks similar to some of the photos I've found (some photos make it look brighter or more deeply colored, but that might just be an enhancement of the reality), and the scent is luscious. I got 3 larger and 3 smaller shoots (rooted side branches) from it, and I figure a couple of them might go to my brother and maybe to another trader I'm working with this week, leaving 3 or 4 available for the swap. :-) I took a photo of the bloom, will download this evening along with the photo I took of the chocolate peppermint & KYC spearmint.
I've also got a creeping sedum with tiny, pointed, bright green succulent leaves and little yellow blooms... would be easy to pot some up. There's a ton of what looks like Perilla coming up (again!) in my side bed; if anybody wants some, LMK, otherwise it's getting pulled up before it gets too big. As an experiment, I potted up a few shoots of Geranium 'Biokovo' (cranesbill, white blooms)... they don't have roots but seem like they should root readily from their sprawling stems... we'll see.
I wintersowed columbines again this year, and they're starting to come up. Lots of them. If they're big enough to harden off & transplant before the swap, I'll bring some to share. If anybody is really dying for some, LMK and I'll try to find you some volunteers or divide one of my larger clumps.
dragonfly, not piggish at all! ;) :) I've just been so busy then when I do get on here I peek in a few threads and run with not much time to respond. I would love some of your oxalis and mums :)
hart I would like some mondo grass and mums
OOOhhh critter! I was just getting ready to find some creeping thyme to buy. Do you have the fuzzy one? I forget off the top of my head the name. Doesn't matter I'll take what ever you've got and already have the spot ready to plant them :) :) :)
I'm sure there are other plants listed here I would love but I've gotta run again.
I've got a bunch more plants for my list but just may have to show up with them if I don't get the time to actually put them on the list. I'm quite sure I've got passi's incarnata and incense both (and may not be able to distinguish which is which) in the MD garden. I haven't looked for sprouts but they have come up with no problems for the last few years. They spread a LOT! I'll look around when I'm up there next and dig some up if they've made an appearance yet.
Jill--
If you think that some of your lavender would dig up and grow--I would love to have some. We have nice sized pots at HD of some kind of lavender--but i am NOT paying $15 for that!
I know that your lavender almost has no beginning and no end--so where does one dig? Could you find a spot where some new growth is coming up?
Maybe I should blow the $$$ and buy the one at HD. The "leaves" on this seem really succulent and it has long spikes with some bloom on them. Don't know the variety.....
Holly----HELP!
The OSP starts you sent --SO extremely well packaged--I put them in water right away--are losing leaves. Other than the tips--the leaves have just shriveled up, one at a time, and fallen off.
Should I pot them up in soil? Would that be better? The ones you sent potted up are doing OK. Still have them on my windowsill.
Gonna be 38* tonight, Folks! I have brought all my seedling flats back inside (they have been outside under my Patio for a week) and have covered up all my basil seedlings, and have put BIG plastic pots over my already planted Tomatoes. Some of them are starting to bloom already! I know I was early planting them--but I had to, as they were over a foot tall and wide....Didn't know what else to do! AND--We DID have a stretch of really warm days! I know better--but I still succumb to the same "eagerness" that every one else does.
My dug up and potted "Naked Ladies" are yellowing/whithering all their leaves (having been disturbed by me digging them up) so you will all be getting a pot of dirt--with MY WORD that there IS something in there........Four bulbs in each! I have plenty!
Happy--You get 3 pots, as you asked FIRST! I have about 12 total. NO sweat! New neighbor is slowly moving in--so NO more digging......Have NO, Nada, Zilch clue if they are interested in gardening at all.....We shall see.................
XoX, Gita
I don't think I've got any extra of the really fuzzy silvery 'Wooly Thyme' (mine has been struggling in its current spot), but I should have some 'Hall's Wooly' that I can get for you (somewhat less fuzzy but still pretty) and probably a couple others just for fun.
Gita, sorry, I know you've asked me this before. The lavender, believe it or not, are single-stemmed shrubs at their base, so there's no such thing as dividing a plant. They seldom "layer" voluntarily, and I haven't made the concerted effort that cuttings would require (I've tried just sticking a few from time to time but they haven't taken; probably I need to rig one of those misting "cloner" devices.)
I'm guessing we'll get down to DeBaggio's before the swap. I can pick one up for you (for less than $15) -- 'Fat Spike' if you want one like the ones by my driveway; otherwise take a look at his website and LMK.
Thanks, Jill---I do understand! Maybe i will buy one at work--even though last Sunday, there were only about 5 left! I always procrastinate! They DID look nice!
Do you know, by any chance, WHEN Red/Purple Fountain Grass becomes available? I NEEEEEED at least one for my big flower pot in front of the house.....
Thanks, Gita
well, LMK if you don't find one... DeBaggio has some nice varieties!
Gita - the Provence Lavender has the best scent, by far. Unless you're specifically looking for a "showy" bloom. Walmart carries the Bonnie herbs and has had 'Provence' the last 3-4 years. They're only $3ish per 3" pot. I also found 'Spanish' Lavender at mine - not strongly scented but has the pretty blooms if that's "your thing."
Jody - please tell me if your passis are coming up...I'm like a mother hen hover around where mine were. Last year was my first year for them...and I adored them. I'm not seeing any "life" thus far.
THESE temps at night are killing me (along with filling up my gas tank !! $62 !! - at Costco, no less) Brought in ALL my seedlings last night and they will remain there (so much for that hardening off & my MG were already getting stronger vines)...till, looks like, TH....UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gita, the nursery in Woodstock always has several kinds of lavender. Grosso has been very reliable for me and is a pretty plant. I think they would have provence too.
They usually have them in small pots for around $2 and larger pots for around $4. I haven't been able to check the prices this year but that shouldn't be off my much.
Would you like me to get you some and bring it to the swap?
Grosso is another name for Fat Spike -- the big lavender that lines one side of my driveway. Province may have a better scent, but L. grosso is tough!
My main interest in lavender is to harvest the "leaves" and the blooms for my Potpourie.
I have a Wall Mart nearby. Will check there......Thanks for the variety suggestions.....
I wil;l let you know if i don't find any, hart----then you can pick some up for me, if it is convenient.
Thanks, Gita
just skimmed through quickly....critter, ming toy is yours :-)
Thanks! I'll have to find you something special in return... :-)
Critter, my wooly thyme is struggling too, it's in a sandy area of the yard. I wonder if it needs a heavier soil?
Re the "hot & Spicy" greek oregano, thanks I'll try it.. Did you still want some of my regular greek oregano?
Thanks Critter!
LOL Chantell! Don't fret, I'm sure yours will show. They are slow to come up in the spring, they like it warm and like to sleep in ;) I probably won't be in MD before Monday to check on mine. They definately were not up when I was there last Tues/Weds, I was working in the area they are planted and I would have seen them.
They come up all over the place in that area, so theres your "warning" about them ;) they can be a bit aggressive when happy. I planted the incarnata, but never actually planted the incense; it planted itself. I had it in a pot and it rooted in the ground, next thing I knew it was coming up a few feet away from the pot. It's been coming up ever since and that was 3-4 years ago.
Ahh Jody...thanks for the encouragement - I really enjoyed those last year!!
Obedient plant, anyone? It's coming up in about a 4 x 4 ft. patch this year -- way too much! I'm going to hoe most of it up unless people want some, in which case I'll let it grow a little more to pot up. It's the regular lilac colored one.
Updated my list a bit: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4793142
hey critter, i like the obedient plant.....hart gave me one last year....only thing around here that listens :-)
Updated as well....dang it - posting link did not work
Silver Lace Vine
Siberian iris - purple and white
Alaskan/Shasta Daisy
Black Eye Susans (of course LOL)
I can start some MG's if anyone wants me to
Columbines - blue/white
A white hydrangea (I believe it is a peegee)
A pink Hydrangea (NO idea what)
Rose of Sharon
Geraniums - Rozanne/Johnson Blue
Sedums - at least 6 different types
Hosta ("generic" type)
Day Lillies (no idea)
Oriental Lily - white - Casa Blanca
Do ya notice a trend here - all of these are established plants and didn't use markers :-)

LOL... the way Obedient plant reseeds, I think it's like Black-Eyed susans... once you've got a clump going, you don't need any more of them! But if anybody needs either obedient plant or BES, please speak up! :-)
If you are really going to compost them, I'd love a handful. I've killed every obedient plant I've tried. For that reason, please don't give them to me if anyone else wants them!
Critter, it doesn't reseed, it spreads by roots. I would suggest that you pull it instead of using a hoe or you'll just make it spread more. It is very easy to pull the extra plants, though.
I have plenty of the Vivid obedient plant if anyone wants any. It's on my list above. It's very easy to contain it - just take the bottom out of a coffee can and bury it where you're going to plant them. The roots don't go very deep.

Really? It made so many of those little seeds and scattered them around, I assumed that's where all the little ones were coming from. Happy, you can have about a hundred of them. Good golly. You wouldn't believe how big that patch is. And I'm not letting it get into the lily bed! :-) I should have planted it like Hart suggested.
Once you start pulling them, you'll see what I mean. The roots are thick - that's why they're so easy to pull - and you'll be able to pull right back to where they rooted from.
I pull mine back drastically every couple of years. You could do it every spring instead if you want to keep them really contained and have fewer to pull. It's so easy to pull them, I never bothered to bury anything to contain the roots. It takes maybe 15 minutes to do. Maybe a bit more if your patch is huge.
critter, i would like some black-eyed susans too if you have them to spare....they've always been a favorite
OH PLEASE take some of mine! I was just out front and realized my BES and Daisies are spreading rapidly!!!
Bec, could I get some of your siberian iris, daisies and columbines?
You shore can....:-)
Thank you, ma'am. LOL
Becky, do you think you've got enough BES to go around? If anybody wants them in quantity (like dozens of little plants), just LMK!
As long as I have a couple of small clumps left I'll be happy to share the rest & someone helps me differentiate between the BES & the daisies
The leaves are really different... BES leaves look almost (but not quite) like plantain, the broad-leafed lawn weed.
Hmm, if you have extra BES to spare, I might try a clump in front of my house. . ..
I'll bring some to make sure there's plenty. :-)
Looks like a few of the American Honeysuckle cuttings might be rooting, too... Lonicera americana
Jill is that the one everyone fusses about being invasive...???
No. Japanese honeysuckle is invasive.
