I'm still juggling dates... need to hear from my brother's family what their schedule is for that weekend. They get so few chances to come down, especially for holiday weekends, that if they can get down here for Memorial Day I'm not about to tell 3 nieces & 1 nephew, sorry, have to run off and play with my plant friends, LOL. DH's birthday is the 24th, but he says he's fine with the idea of having a celebratory cookout on the 25th, so that's not a conflict.
I'm wondering if it's too late to start more peppers... I don't have half as many as I'd like, due to the predations of a mouse I haven't yet caught. Knock wood, at least he is leaving the tomatoes etc. alone!
Anyway, unsettled plans and uncertain seedlings are why I haven't been posting on the plant swap thread yet! :-)
Here a Swap, There a Swap, Anywhere a Spring Swap?
Gita, you are talking about lilies, right? If so, I'm interested!
I am talking about the "Naked Lady"--aka "Resurection Lilies".....
This time of year they send up just the leaves--then in August the stems with the flowers come up. The leaves are all gone by then. I think that is why they are called "naked ladies".....
Did you see the picture i posted above from them?
Gita
Hmmmm re date....wondering if Becky realized that was THAT weekend...we'll need to chat about that. She's on vacation though - so unless SHE calls me I'm going to wait till she comes back to hit her up with questions. Hope that'll be ok for everyone
Yep, I saw the photo and loved them -- but I wanted to be sure that I didn't lose track of the conversation.
I am expanding my lilly bed this year.
[Gita: I'm raising my hand and waving it wildly for the naked ladies.]
My Mom has a neighbor that lines her walk way with them. They are the only flower down the walk other than the ground cover. They look so cute standing there all by themselves in all their naked glory. Put me down for a small one if you have enough. Hey if you want the rest from the neighbors house just go over at night dig a big obvious hole and then tell her about those bad groundhogs you had last year. LOL
ROFLOL! I remember that big-hole-digging critter you were trying to discourage last year! I don't know if you ever figured out for sure it was a groundhog or what, but I think you got rid of it finally... I agree, great excuse! LOL
LOL the big bad ground hog!!! Gita - I'll pass on these since they're limited - let the rest that really want them - have them. :)
i have some up for grabs....forgot to go look back at the haves/wants to update that i have another clump up for grabs....i'm pretty sure both clumps can be divided into two, so that is four & i know someone mentioned wanting some....i haven't had any caffiene today so i can't remember anything!
Sorry if I sounded greedy -- I didn't mean to. It just slipped out! I do have some now (or at least I hope I do), so please don't pass over Chantell for me!
Nah, Happy - it's all good...I favor those with scent...i.e. Orientals etc. I did cave last year during Bluestone's 1/2 price sale and put a few day lilies out back...but unless they smell great I can pass without much hesitation...which would be why I'm stalking you and your mystery vine..didn't notice eh? ROTFLOL
I'm definitely getting to the heart of that vine! I just hope it is still in bloom on Saturday so I can take a good photo. Unless (OMG) all the other pedestrians have taken a piece of it and it has been hacked to death. What an awful thought.
That's it...I'm sending up the "girls" to stand watch for you..."Save the Vine" Rottie patrol
Hey you! All this chivalry!!!!
I am sure i will have plenty! I will let you all know how many 1gal. pots I end up having once I separate them out into pots.
As for digging up "clumps"---they are NOT in "clumps"! As you dig--all these bulbs just sort of fall apart from each other. At least that's what mine did....
I sure hope that Ground Hog doesn't come back! I finally dissuaded it by 'refreshing" all the rags around the filled in hole with Ammonia every few days and i also dug in some Moth Balls in the soil I used to fill the hole. How long do Moth balls keep their scent?
Been meaning to pour a few down in that area--just haven't done it yet.
Gita
moth balls gradually evaporate, I think... I wouldn't worry about it unless you see new evidence of digging
Jill,
These Moth balls are buried in the soil--but i still pored about a hand full around the place and scratched them in. Just to be sure.
While I have you---Here is a picture of the Alpine Strawberry plant you gave me. I had to put it in a huge pot, as i have no place in the sun to plant them in a bed. I think they will be just fine. besides--I have a slew of these coming up from seed...I got this little 3" clay pot that was a kit to grow Alpine Strawberries from my Secret Pal (a Best and Worst Forum thing...). We all get a new Secret Pal every 2 months. Sharan started it.
What should I do now? What do you fertilize these with? How about some good manure or Humus? Fish Emulsion? What????
I have Fish Emulsion coming out of my ears! Just bough a gallon of it by mistake ($32) thinking it was Liquid Seaweed. BUMMER!!!!! I did not need FE! I wanted my gallon of Liquid Seaweed. That usually lasts me 3 years! I always use it to water in EVERYTHING I plant. And EVERYTHING always "takes".....Love the stuff!!!!
Gita
Here's my Tomatoes!!!! The tray sitting, royally, on top of my trash can for this picture....
Mamma Mia!!!!! Wish i could just plant them outside NOW! How much longer????????
Too tall for the light set-up, but I still squish them under there. Take them outside if the weather is nice. Then back inside.
What a "live and learn" lesson this has been of WHEN to seed Tomatoes! I did these on march 2nd.
OK! Here is the huge clump of the "Nekked ladies" by the kitchen door of my new neighbor's house. The one I am NOT going to dig up.
It has been like this for, all tall and flopped over for a long time already. Funny how some of you are saying yours are not even up yet....
Anyway---------------
I potted all the bulbs up that I dug up in 1 gal pots. Each pot has about 4 bulbs in it. I also made sure at least one of the 4 is a good sized bulb. Got a total of 9 pots out of it.
This is the spot I dug mine out of. There were 2 sprawly clumps there. As I said earlier--one was for my neighbor's daughter, Judy, the other one was M-I-N-E!
I just spied another clump--totally behind this Holly bush--on the other side--right in front of the Gas meter. VERY, VERY bad location!!!!! Might have to do "something" about it........I mean....they just CANNOT stay there! They are not even visible!
....Hum-de-dee.....My wicked thoughts are raging.......
I love when you talk wicked!
(I didn't realized naked ladies had leaves like that -- I thought it had strappy leave like an amaryllis.)
Gita, the alpine strawberries will do fine in a big pot like that... my brother's kids have a pot by their front porch of ones that I gave them a couple years ago, and they're doing great. I'm not sure they get fed with anything on a regular basis, LOL, although the kids are very good about keeping them watered... whatever kind of fertilizer you're giving anything else, just give them a little too.
Depending on when and where the swap is it may be a possibility.
Shirley: I hope you can come -- it'd be great to finally meet in person!
Agree with happy, Shirley. I think we need to wait for Becky to come back from vacation to make sure the date is set in stone. But I CAN tell you it will be at Becky's townhouse which is about 15 southish of Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge VA. Here's the thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/833268/
