What is wrong with this hen?

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

wow mcamden....that must have been some sight! Just reading it I could see it happening. Thank goodness nothing too bad happened! Bet you make sure the door is closed from now on though, huh? lol

Molly....I hope I don't see that again either! My eyes were as big as saucers I was so surprised!

I have to concur with all of you. The chickens have
found their way into the front yard, and that means onto
the front porch. With all this heat and no rain, I water
the front nearly every day, and they just love to hang
out where it's cool. I don't blame them, I would too,
but the messes is certainly that. So, I give the porch a
daily washing, too. I spray them a little sometimes-
I will exclude them at some point- somehow- but for now
with temps near 100, I will sacrifice a little so they can
be more comfortable.
I will be glad when DH has his 'Man Cave' space all
for him, the chickens theirs and my front yard is all
mine again.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

you have chickens. nothing is all yours anymore LOL

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

I have the same problem truest. Its getting better though....we have our little ornery dog chained to the porch now, and are training him to keep the chickens off the porch. It's slow going, but I am hoping not to have to spray down my porch so often.

I am jealous you guys are not drowning in rain like we are! We have had so much flooding that we cant even bale hay, and last year it was a drought! I guess we cant win for loosing. It is raining here....again, and all of my chickens are wet. Although Bob is standing out in the rain trying the catch the drops. Silly duck.

Should I change my screen name on here? Maybe I will just make it Melissa (Owner of Bob the duck) hahaha..

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

there is a rule on Davee's that you can only change your screen name ONCE... i don't know if there is one saying how many letter long it can be... LOL How about BobbiesMnM?

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

I'm thinking that 15 letters/numbers/spaces might be the max......I just looked at mine and it fills the whole username line......I don't think I could have squished one more thing on there...lol. You could use bobtheducksmom and then maybe a number. : )

.....or maybe bobtheducksmomm........or bobtheducksmomM.....the last m and M for Melissa. Just a thought. : )

Melissa, have you floated away yet?

Glenwood, IA

Hahaha...no. We are high enough up here that we will never have to deal with floods....until we drive down our driveway. We should put an elevation sign on top of our hill where our house is. I will keep thinking of a bettter screen name...I am no longer a Camden anyway...so sad. :)

Also, we have wild turkey eggs. OUr neighbor was out mowing, and he found the nest. The mother turkey went running from the spot when he got too close. He needed to finish mowing, and dint want to destrop them, so he called me. I put them in the incubator, but last night when I candled then I didnt see anything. They look like they are either not fertilized, or maybe she just laid them? I thought it was too late for turkeys to be having babies. We only see small turkey in the early spring around here. Any thoughts?

(Zone 6b)

My two month old silkies are walking right by the dog and into the garage. So far no mess, but I'm sure the messes will come if this continues. They don't seem to be afraid of the dog. Sometimes she runs at them and they run. I was thinking about maybe putting a toddler gate on there.

I have another question. Every night I have to go out and put them in the rabbit cages, one by one, all twenty-two of them. They are huddled together BY the cages, but not in them. After I build the chicken coop, will they go in there at night by themselves or is this an ongoing struggle? I mean I didn't mind at first, but this is getting old.

Maybe I need to make it more appealing to them. I remember reading, and some of you talking about, some kind of material you put in your chicken coops. I forgot what it was, or where to get it.

Karen

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

it takes a few nights to a week. it will help if you can put a little light in there, so when they get close to the cage, jthey see it and think, oh, now i go in THERE...

m, do you have a boat at the bottom of the hill?

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Melissa, we sometimes have turkeys lay eggs this late because their first nest is destroyed by whatever. This is not too late to raise a flock of them. Plus, they would be held until she finished laying before they would start growing.

hahaha...our chickens always go into the coop at night. we used to turn the light on at night, and they woudl stay out later...now we dont turn the light on, and they go home early.

Tamara- Yes...we have a boat half way between the bottom of the hill, and our house. :)

I have been keeping the turkey eggs at 99 degrees, and 60% humidity like I did the chickens. I was able to see movement by day 4 with the chickens...so guessing at day 5 or 6 with these since turkey take longer?

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Might very well happen. Hope so.

You can't do that! What will *I* do when I get my 2 Jersey Giant girls and I start signing myself here as 'Melissa, personal slave of Bob the cat'?!

Here's Bob, demonstrating irreproachable feline table etiquette. Does he look anything like the duck?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

personally, i am seeing a resemblance in the facial expression/attitude...

Chillicothe, OH

He does have a bit of a sneer, dunnee...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

so what is the nde on the end of your username for?

Chillicothe, OH

Spent the first 20 or so years of life being very unique as a Melissa, then suddenly the name got popular, melissas were popping up like spring grass, so when time came to choose a business name, I went with Melisande, a name which hasn't been well known since the 11-hundreds. I usually get just 'Melis' as a nickname anyway, and voila, I'm back to being a singularity again.

Clear as mud, eh?

Chillicothe, OH

Know anbody on this list that keeps Jersey giants?--Melis

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

I DO! check out my threads, you will see lots of chick pics...

Glenwood, IA

Darmit! And here I thought I was the only one! I haven't seen any other Melissa's on here...but here you are. I guess I could always go back to what I used to be called....'Missy' (which I hated). But my DH still calls me that because he was around when I was 10! Then my brothers started calling me Missy Prissy...and Messy Missy...and the names kept coming. So I went back to Melissa since they couldnt find anything good ad to it in hopes of making fun of me. :)

I will keep trying to come up with something else for a screen name. Maybe just my first and Middle? MelissaBeth. But I dont want to take over Tamara's screen name idea.

I think Bob the cat does have the same eyes of Bob the duck. :) Does your Bob follow you around the house playing with your toes too? My bob loves to try to eat my shoe laces.

Chillicothe, OH

he'll pat your ankles occasioally if he's bored and feeling a little ornery. But I've always taken his need to hunt things down and kill 'em, and played really hard with him when he was young and silly, so he knows I'm good for a romp when he needs to work some kinks out.

I think when we interact with our animals a lot they get that extra alert 'glitter' in their eyes, for two reasons: they understand more of what's going on around them and they learn watching us closely pays big dividends. My Bob's eyes are always on me.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Tommiami is a leg-cat. He like to bite them when he wants attention or is begging for something. He is finally "talking" to us when he wants a treat, or his nip, or even when he is getting his supper treat (they get 1/6 a can of cat food). Other than that, he is a cat that kind of says, "leave me alone". He won't let you hold him, and is just now allowing us to pet him. He's eight years old now.

Well Bob the duck doesnt mind sitting with us, but he does nip at us a lot these days. He mostly tries to get our feet, and I though it was just becaue they were closer...but when I put my hands down he doesnt 'attack' them like he does out feet. He mostly goes after our feet when we go in the coop. he runs up to us, and it is almost getting annoying now. I think he is just showing us how upset he is that we make him live with the chickens...although he runs that coop. If the rooster were the president...Bob the duck would be the first lady. Hahaha...
