what kind of paint works the best on plastic?

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

I'll probably just hold off on the painting, then. I just put one plant in yesterday, the other two are Japanese Maples that I put into the pots last fall. I want to avoid moving them around too much : )

In another thread I saw a "pot" that was trimmed along the top with that foam meant to surround pipes for insulation. When the whole pot & foam trim was painted, it made the foam look like a bulky rim on the pot, it was REALLY a nice touch!

Illoquin, my sister who is an artist helped me with that pot and used about 5 different colors on it. She gets her ideas from Jacosta Innes's books. But I think you can get the same effect from kits available for purchase at Lowes--get the 'verdigris' kind for the weathered copper look. She is going to help me do some more pots and I will pay closer attention to what she uses.

I just went to the Cincy Flower Show today and saw lots of pots, didn't buy any though. Very good time there today!

Illoquin, That's one my sister helped with...a 'verdigris' finish. (Don't know what exact colors went into it.) I'm glad you like it. Now I have to get the fountain part working. Not so easy as painting it because I think the problem is in the electrical outlet or the fuse box! Makes me pull my hair out!

Gorgeous day in the garden here, and I'm going to pot up some of my vines into my new painted pots with trellises. I am very enthusiastic on these projects now that I toured the flower show and saw what could be done with a little imagination! (-:

I'm looking in my storage room for more pots to paint today! So many pots, so little time!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, well, artistic I am not! Darn! It's gorgeous!

Do you have pics of trellis pots? Either yours or theirs? I am getting desperate.

I have one with about a 40 x 40" trellis in it. All the vines I have, though are way bigger (longer, taller) than that. The only thing I can think of that would go up the trellis is Nasturtiums.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Illoquin, get a NEW plant started to go up your trellis. Take a cutting of something existing or plant a Morning Glory seed? I had the opportunity to get some Twisted Willow branches. I am going to paint them wild colors and incorporate them as vine supports. Gardening can be such a wonderful creative outlet. I LOVE IT! Part of my garden will probably be more Art gallery than "flower garden". Nothing High Brow, just whimsical garden art, mostly out of recycled stuff like Bowling balls, old kitchen chairs.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Illoquin, I'm just starting out with vines so mine are still minnies. I have a few trellises but nothing like you are talking about. Just the ones from Big Lots.

I did meet a fellow at the Farmers' Market who makes trellises and I may get him to do a few for me. First I have to cut down my backyard trees to get some sun though, and that may take some doings....

psychw, your f'lower garden' as 'art gallery' sounds fun! I'm not that creative (yet) but I am working on it!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Psychw, The vines I have are all new. Every year they are new (annuals from seed). They still get too big in the season for a little trellis.

Big Lots had a walk through arbor I thought I might like. Does anybody know if I can stain redwood a lighter color?

Suzy

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I don't think you can "stain" redwood a lighter color. On the other hand you can give it a "white wash"... or maybe the "pickling" treatment with a lighter color.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Will it look okay, do you think? I was going to use an almost white stain, but I understand it is probably not stain at all. We did the trim of the storage shed in it and it's a light gray.

OR, I saw one extremely similar to it about 30 miles away in white, but my car was too small. With the cost of gas, I hate to drive that far to go back & get it.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

You could try a little bit of the white wash/stain on a hidden strip and see if you like the 'look' of it. http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:jdnUV2Eaf-EJ:www.gardenstructure.com/exterior_stain_wood.html+cedar+staining&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=4&gl=us

I don't know though, I saw some 'red cedar' chairs at the farmers market and they were pretty 'red'. Maybe if your trellis is white cedar it might give you the look you're after...

Great link Tabasco, I enjoyed reading it.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

They do sell opaque wood stains--they're a little less common than the transparent and semi-transparent sorts, but since they're opaque they ought to cover up the redwood color. I think redwood is one of the harder woods to stain though so I'm not sure if it'll take the opaque ones well or not. You could also just let it age naturally, it turns a more muted grayish color over time.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It turns grayish? I didn't know that! :) Thanks, Ecrane! Tab, thanks, too, but I wanted assurance it would work BEFORE I bought it. LOL!

I bought these tonight

jlp, we're looking forward to seeing pictures of your projects with your new paint. I really like the "hammered" finish one.

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Me too! I was suprised it was the same price. They were each about $4.75 at Wal Mart.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

do you have a special project all picked out for the paint? I've seen some mighty fine work here on DG done with paint for plastic, layered & antiqued with colors. There was some kind of shiny metal container that got a foam edge etc & spray painted. If you can find that thread on T to T, it might also give you some cool ideas.

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Ooooh, that sounds cool. Honestly, I am going to spray some one and three gallon black plastic containers from the nursery. They are nice and new, and don't really look like your standard nursery pots. I'll keep my fingers crossed and post pictures (good or bad :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

jlp - The Fusion is the one I also bought at Wal Mart. I know someone said, earlier on this thread, that there are many paints available for use on plastic but Fusion is the only one I've seen and I've been to many paint stores as well as WM.

Sounds like an interesting idea for that pot, psychw2. If you find it please post a link for us. Thanks.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I found one of the threads I mentioned but I did NOT see the foam edge that I mentioned so it must have been on a different thread! (not the one I thought). There is a link on this thread to "stoneffects" that is really cool too. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/798069/

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That hammered copper Rustoleum came out beautifully!

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

This thread TALKS about the foam edge but did not show pictures. I KNOW I saw the pictures somewhere... see the post by Daisyavenue, down a short ways. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/789444/

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Ooooh, that is pretty!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

She mentioned Garden Gate magazine. I do get it so one of these days I'll have to actually open it and read it.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Someone mailed me a box of their older magazines, Garden Gate was one of them. I REALLY liked the magazine.

Someone posted a great idea they had for decorating stumps.

That is cool. I used an already hollowed out one to plant flowers, but I never thought of using the basket & moss etc. I scooted my hollowed out one close to the bird bath so my cat & other "wildlife" could use the stump to access the water in the birdbath.

I have also used a stump as a pedestal for yard art. I had a metal cat that was mid-air after a bird (on a spring), it was very nice looking on the pedestal!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good idea!
