I want to grow some nastrutiums in some hanging baskiets. I have a LOT of pro mix. Is this soil too "rich" to germinate and grow nasturtiums. Any suggestions on germinating these pretty flowers is welcome.
Pro Mix for Nasturtium?
I find they are best direct seeded in soil on hand. No babying. I grew them like weeds in Zone 1 seeded directly into the ground. Fill your baskets with regular potting soil or soil from your beds and go for it. Note they are aphid magnets so take care on that. Hope this helps.
I would think the Pro mix will be fine for hanging baskets. I have grown them in it before without any problems. If you have alot of it-use it
I agree with Tigerlily; it will be perfect. Let them dry out between waterings and stay away from any fertilizer with a high first number. (Too much nitrogen = too much foliage.
For the aphids, get more birds, like hummers. I had the fewest number of aphids last year EVER. and can only assume it's the birds (unless Japanese beetles eat them -- had a bumper crop of those devils last year. hahaha)

I am kind of determined to grow nasties this year. I really like them. I have some old seed that seemed viable. However, if they don't sprout, I am going to buy a couple more packets and try again., I am also going t put some seeds in peat pots and plant them directly in the ground--unless that's a bad idea? I know they don't like ot be transplanted. It's raining here again today., In the last 6 weeks, we have had 20 inches! I am so anxious to get out in my yard and get some things done.
My opinion is they'd rather be transplanted than be in a peat pot. I started some today in a community pot; once they germinate and get a set of leaves on them, I'll take a look at the forecast and I'll plant them out if all seems well (no deep freezes).
Peat pots have the ability to hold too much moisture, even when they are in the ground, I don't think the Nasties will appreciate it. I have a huge bias against peat pots, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

Thanks Suzy. I hadn't thought of the peat pots from a moisture stand point.
