I did it!

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Oh, it isn't just deer here, either. We also have those wild critters here. They stay away from the garden where it is surrounded with the snow fence. As for goats, no, we don't have them. We do, however, have chickens and I just found out these guys love to roam. We are going to have to watch them because they are roaming quite far from home now. We didn't have that problem the last flock we had. But they don't bother the plants either. They will in what I call the little garden because it is open on one side and they are already dusting themselves there.

Right now I have plants heeled in there for our plant sale which will hopefully be in about 3 - 4 weeks. This sale is for our local library. I am president on the boosters and so have to do most of the work for fundraising, like collect plants and keep them over the winter so we can have something to sell in the spring. After I take the plants, which are in pots, out of the little garden, I will plant tomatoes and peppers there. We will have to keep the chicks out of it then.

Well, I hope you can keep the critters out of your garden whatever way you choose to do so.

Thanks Granny. I will give the snow fencing a try but it will have to wait till next year because right now the stores are rid of stuff like that and loaded with gardening stuff. It's like finding a bathing suit in July! Very hard to do!!

MollyD

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

True, but you might be able to get some from a farmer that has some extra. We got ours from a contractor friend and it was used, but so what? It is still okay to use even if it isn't new.

Lodi, United States

Hi MollyD--I was going to say, that here, in CA, where we have no snow, they use the same fence on construction sites. Bright orange--we use it in our trial fields to discourage theft of the tomatoes. So maybe a contractor supply house, like Granny said.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Yep, it is the same orange fencing they use on construction sites. That is where our friend got ours from.

Thanks, Catscan.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Hadn't thought of construction! Rarely see it on work sites in my area. Will look into that.

Thanks!

Maybe. I can but ask but it's a bit doubtful.

MollyD

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

really? Our TSC guys are the best customer service people I have ever met.. for a national chain they seem to know what they are doing.. they work together.. they are helpful .. now, with that said, I never go on the weekends, so maybe I don't get to see the teenage help.

But I am sure my weekday guys would do everything in their power to get me what I wanted/needed.. thats why I try to shop there when I can.. even if the price is a little more.. can't afford if if its a lot more thought!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

We've always had friendly knowledgeable service from our local TSC. They've even called manufacturers for us to make sure we were buying the right item. It's too bad if your local TSC doesn't have the same service, molly. Is there another one a bit further that you might get better service at?

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Could be a matter of location or manager's approach. Here they don't like to get out of season stuff. Go figure but as I said I can ask . Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

MollyD

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

There is another one 35 miles from us.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

It's that NY attitude Sandy... LOL... out here in the midwest we are a lot more neighborly.

(hope ya'll know I AM joshin ya)

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

LOL don't worry frans530! We say the same thing but when we say NY we mean NYC!

MollyD

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

I have loved the stroll down memory lane. I remember
cartoons after school, and until noon or so on Saturday's.
I remember Ma Bell and if you wanted a touch tone phone
it was expensive. I also remember the princess phone
when it came out, I wanted one so bad. The phone
numbers down here were Listed with the first 2 call
letters first, CA6-3232.
I also helped my grandfather and the rest of my Dad's
family bring in one of his last crops of tobacco in Georgia.
They had 12 kids in his family plus their spouses, and
we would go through the fields and pick it by hand, and then
put it up in the drying barn, hand tying all the leaves onto
drying sticks. I miss big fish fry's and sitting around in the
shade shelling butter beans for dinner.
We spent every summer down there and then up to Ohio
for my Mom's family, which had 9 kids and spouses! I had
at one time over 72 first cousins! My Mom's family had a
dairy farm. I would help run cows through the milking chutes.
Those were the days.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Yep, Joni, those were the days. And, remember, in those days, gas was 20 cents a gallon. And, some of the gas stations would have gas wars and then it might be as low as 15 cents.

Going to the "picture show" on Saturdays. Cost us 10 cents + 2 cents luxury tax. Would get a quarter from the folks and had enough for tickets plus popcorn and ice cream on the way home.

Other things like that come to mind, but will leave that alone as I don't want to hijack this any longer.

GG

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

LOL do you remember when the gas stations use to give premiums so you would buy their gas? Glasses, plants and other gifts. Later saving stamps so you could get what you wanted. And they ran outside in any weather to pumped your gas, cleaned your windshield and check your oil and tires all at no extra charge! And the gas like Granny said was cheap.

Back when a dollar was a dollar (sigh).

MollyD

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey Granny, it's Molly's thread and seems she is
having just as much fun remenescing as we are.
When my Dad retired, he opened a full service gas
station and I worked there for a bit as a teen. Customer
service was a big thing to him, and not many care now.
My Mom gave my brother some food ration stamps she
had saved since the days. They are neat to see and
know what things were like back then. I miss going to
pick blackberries and plums along the dirt roads in
Georgia. If you didn't own a speck of land, you could
still eat for free. (as long as you had a bathroom, you'd
be ok. lol)
I loved helping my aunt make butter. She used an
electric churn in a 2 gallon jar, but you still don't see
those anymore. We pressed the butter into wooden
butter molds with flowers on top. Even then she made
salted and unsalted for my uncle.
I love reading about life for you before what it was
like in my time, Granny.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Yeah, that's true, it IS Molly's thread.

Some of the things back then were hard, but most were better. I remember my grandmother making butter in a glass jar just by shaking it. If you could get "creamline" milk (not homogenized) now, you could still make your own butter. I still do canning, but do like the convenience of the freezer. That is one thing that is better.

Maybe we should start a new thread of the things that are better now than they were then. Opinions please?

GG

Or, for that matter, what was better then?

Lodi, United States

My cousin recently asked her now-ex husband to whip cream for Thanksgiving dessert. He whipped and whipped and whipped until the whole thing separated into butter and buttermilk. He is a scientist, she is a nurse but neither knew what had happened---. She was furious that dessert was ruined I was thrilled with the fresh butter!

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

The last time I had whipping cream, it wouldn't
make butter. What did I do wrong? It never would
firm up like I thought it should. I also thought it was
neat that my aunt rinsed her butter. Does everyone
do this?
I also think a thread just for the good old and new
days would be neat.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

I have no problem with the way the thread has gone ^_^

Cream sold in stores now days often doesn't have enough fat in it to whip. That's part of the problem. Also it whips best if you start with everything chilled (cream, bowl and beaters).
The package needs to say heavy cream, not half and half or light cream.

MollyD

Lodi, United States

It was heavy whipping cream--it's all I ever buy. Not going to bother getting fat unless I can really enjoy it;0)

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

I haven't whipped cream in years! Use to make it for desert toppings for my boys. Neither Paul nor I need the extra goodness :-) these days!

MollyD

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks, girls. I did have my things chilled- I put
a bowl in another bowl of ice. I will try again.
And, for goodness sakes, you only put a tiny bit of
confectioners sugar in whipped topping! How fat
could that make you. haha, I know, sugar is non fat
but I tell myself that's the only bad thing in whipped
cream.
I usually eat a very lite healthy dinner if I'm in the mood
for something decadent for dessert. I can then justify it,
lie to myself, whatever it takes, promise to walk 100 miles,
eat tomatoes for a week, dial back the scale when no
one is looking. LOL

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Everybody who has ever had the tiniest extra weight around their middle knows if you eat whip cream while drinking a diet soda it counter-acts the calories!

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Gee, I'm sure glad I don't care for whipped cream or whipped topping. And yes I know, it surely tastes good......to some folks. And you don't have to yell at me just because I don't like it!!!

GG ^_^

Lodi, United States

Its Okay, Granny--I don't like whipped cream or topping much either. But I LOVE creamy things--especially warm creamy things like pudding and stroganoff. Or nice soft creamy scrambled eggs. Sigh.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Yep, those I can take. Especially creamy sweet potato pudding or rice pudding. Hey, I have some leftover rice in the fridge. Also some leftover bread in the other fridge. Guess it's time to bread or rice pudding. Got raisins too. Yum.

GG

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

That's ok Granny. If I can understand my niece
not being able to touch terra cotta pots, I can surely
understand you not liking whipped cream. LOL

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

GG i am offended i wasn't ivited over! you are making me hungry, i am not even done with my cogffee yet!

truest, you are one understanding AUNT lol. just wait till she sees an egg without the shell fully formed!

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

You put me in the mood to bake something, Granny.
I have all my goodies out for orange-cranberry bread,
and I've also got spinach thawing for spinach and
toasted almond dip. And, why not go whole hog, I have
some brown sugar cinnamon covered pecans in the
oven. I told DH I am making it as a crunchy snack for
DGD this weekend, but I know she can't eat all I'm
making!LOL.
I still wish I had seen Mel's recent egg with the spiral
twist at the bottom.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

me too...

now you ARE sending me the leftovers.... there WILL be leftovers...

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL TF! I better go make that bread, now. Can't have
leftovers if I don't make it!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

get busy!
