Recommend good small shrub for cemetery plot?

Brooklyn, NY

Hi,

I have a winter blooming sarcococca ruscifolia and love it. I wanted to put it at my cousin's headstone in the cemetary because it isn't too big and doesn't grow too fast. I have had mine for 3 years and it is only 3' tall and 2.5' wide. The fact that it is winter blooming, fragrant and has great evergreen color is good too. However, I just found out that it isn't good in the colder zones and my cousin's plot is in Northfield New Hampshire.

Any ideas of good shrubs that would work in that zone that have the pluses that this one does?

You may want to find out if you are allowed to plant anything at a gravesite. My Dad is buried in a cemetery where no permanent plants are allowed. It makes maintenance too difficult.

Yes...we have confirmation that we can...as long as it doesn't grow too big and infringe on anything around it.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Plant Files lists Sarcococca confusa as hardy to zone 6, but I'm pretty sure most of NH is in zones 4 & 5 so it may not work either (if the location is in the zone 5 part of NH though I think it would have a chance). It can get a little bigger than yours, I've never grown it so I don't know how easy it would be to keep it really small http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/81925/

I did an advanced search in Plant Files for things that are hardy to zone 5a, bloom in later winter/early spring, are evergreen, and have fragrant flowers, and are 24-36 inches tall and came up with a big whopping 2 plants, 2 different varieties of Pieris http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/advanced.php?nn%5B16%5D=12&nn%5B1%5D=5&nn%5B2%5D=0&nn%5B3%5D=8&nn%5B4%5D=0&nn%5B5%5D=0&nn%5B6%5D=0&nn%5B7%5D=1&nn%5B8%5D=2&nn%5B9%5D=3&nn%5B23%5D=0&nn%5B10%5D=0&nn%5B12%5D=0&sname=Plants&Search.x=34&Search.y=9
You can always play around, let the height go up to 36-48 inches instead, take away the evergreen or the late winter/early spring bloom and you might find yourself with a lot more options.

Thanks!! I will try that. Appreciate the suggestions and help! Cheryl
