I recently saw a strange procession of worms, writhing in a circle on my driveway. When I tried to research it online, the most useful thing I could find was here, on Dave's, with Gazania_in_pa's post from 2006 about almost the same thing. Our pictures are nearly identical! Yet the only reasoning anyone in the forum could find was that the worms were fungi that were crawling in a confused follow-the-leader type migration.
I honestly don't think these are fungi -- the ones on my driveway looked as though the ring itself was sealed in a membrane or viscous fluid that kept the worms stuck together. It makes me think that they were in some sort of larval state, and that the larger "worms" in Gazania's picture may have simply been more developed than the smaller ones. I'm also thinking that this circle was not just by chance -- especially considering that I have now taken a nearly identical photograph in a completely different state!!
If anyone can help, please let me know!
