Anyone want Sinningia pusilla seeds?

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Oh Gail..I hate that had to happen to you...At least you are taking it pretty well...

(Zone 1)

Gail, that looks like my floors every day! ^_^ I hate when I dump plants on the carpet though ... if they would just listen to me and only tip over/fall off the stand in the rooms with tile! So much easier to clean up tile!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh wait! It is worse than I thought it was................I just cleaned out trays all last week and check these two trays with dirt and mud in the water.............bummer..........now I have to take all the plants off and clean them again...........(only because the violet club is coming Monday night or I would leave it for another week)

Well that sure don't look like its going to be a very fun job : (

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank goodness it was only two trays...........That is a job I can do........had it been more I would be really upset.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh no... Am I in the dog house now? I am so sorry this happened Gail...

It is not your fault that I can hardly not participate!!!!!!!!!!!!! (plus I have a knee that 'gives way' sometimes. I get to have some cortisone put in it tomorrow...........yeah!!)

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Its all YOUR fault Susan!! Just teasing ya girl : ))

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

ha ha ha!!!
nancy, I posted Jo's web address on the other thread. Check out her inventory!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

saw it gail..thanks : ))

makshi, I opened the picture in Paint and used that to make the boxes. It's a little button on the left side that looks like a rectangle, I think, that makes the box.

jsxtiger and Susan51, you're too late for this round of seeds, but I should have more soon. You're welcome to some of those. ^_^

Lin, I don't think it's possible to catch all the pods before they spill, unless you cut them off so they don't ripen at all! Those little seedlings are so cute, though!

Nancy, they're not that hard to see. You can see them at the end of the bloom stalk where the flower was. If you watch them, over the course of a few days you can see them getting more plump. I try to catch mine when they're brown, but before they split and spill. It can happen quite quickly, so you just have to keep an eye on them. I take a very small pair of scissors and just snip the stalk off, then, over a piece of printer paper, I gently squeeze the pod to break it open. The seeds fall on the paper and I fold it around them and put them in the cabinet for a week or so to dry completely. The seeds are like dust. Teeeeeny tiiiiny little things! LOL

Oh Gail, I sure hate that your shelf fell! What a mess! You're lucky it only got into a couple of trays. I'm forever knocking stuff over, though, so I know very well how easily it can happen.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Amy..Sounds simple enough..til I try and do it : o I am excited to try and see if I can collect some seeds now. I will keep a close eye on them until I think they are ready then. Thanks again for the help!!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh Rain I thought it was but it never hurts to ask...LOL I have to go get dirt today and will be planting a few seeds also... thank you for keeping me in mind....

Do you suppose that there might be a seed or two for me next time? It would be my first S. pusilla that I have tried. Actually I am still waiting on my 1st purchased AV leaves to arrive. I know I can grow an AV from a leaf...however I haven't ever used wicks. Where do you buy string of a certain size?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've used mason twine from Home Depot. I've also used synthetic yarn. But I think loops made by cutting half inch cross-sections from the legs of old nylon stockings might be my favorite wicking material... I've tried them a couple of times, and I think I'm going to stick with them. Just give them a pull and they stretch out into more of a "string."

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I buy mine from Academy , the fishing store. I can get size 36 at WAlmart, but with the new Volkmann's very light soil less mix I now have to use size 48..

Everyone has different wicking material they like. I don't have much luck with the old nylon stocking as they get 'stopped up' with I don't know what.........maybe algae?????????

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Maybe I haven't been using the nylon stocking ones long enough to have them get clogged... I started with them because the woman who writes the column on miniatures for the AVSA magazine said that's what she uses.

(Zone 1)

I used to use the nylon stockings but found they just sucked up so much water and my plants were staying too wet. If I had changed to a lighter potting mix it would have helped! I found the nylon hosiery worked better than the nylon twine for me. I had some with the nylon cording get so clogged in green algae. Also on some plants when I used the twine for wicking, I had roots growing through the bottom of the pots entangled in the twine. (Think I should have re-potted sooner?) LOL.

Yeah, I guess what works for one of us might not work for another. Variety is the spice of life.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Did you ever get enough to send to me?

Diane, I believe I have enough for you, too. I haven't sent any out yet. Several things I didn't expect have been plopped into my lap, but surely I can get them sent out this week. Sorry for being so slow, everyone! The good news is, I've harvested some fresh seed! :o)

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

That's okay I just thought you sent them already.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Got my seeds yesterday. Thank you so much for sharing.

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

I received my seeds yesterday. Thanks so very much for sharing. I hope they live and do well for me. I have admired your pictures of them and they are so cute. Thanks again, lou

Oh y'all are going to Love the Micro Mini Sinningia pusilla ... it has become one of my very favorite plants. I had never seen anything so tiny ... just adore it! Mine are planted in glass jars with either lids or saran wrap on the top and sitting on the light stands. They re-seed and I see little teensy green "ears" peeking out of the soil around mama plant all the time. I never thought in a million years that I could keep something so tiny alive but they are thriving in the terrarium like conditions!

I was looking at some web site recently and can't remember which it was, but they carried other micro mini and mini sinningia's too!

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

sniff............sniff! I asked for some, Please! In all the clatter, no one heard me. I've been good! Already got some containers together. sniff..........sniff!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

jsx you are going to make me cry. I have never tried them before so will keep my fingers crossed.

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

sniff............sniff!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Dundalk, MD? Are you coming to the DC area chapter's meeting at the National Arboretum on Sat May 17? Can I lure you with a couple of micro sinns?

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

Did not know anything about it, but would not be able to come anyway. No transportation at this time. So, sorry I will miss it. snif........sniff........but if I had know earlier, maybe could have worked out something.
I just think they are beautiful and unususal and wanted to try growing them. sniff......snifff...........but, thanks for the offer to lure!

Charlotte, NC

I'm not sure quite how many seeds pods are sent in trades/giveaways like this but I have 2 brown/dried pods I could offer you. I would just need someone to tell me how to ship them. I would think I could probably get away with a regular mailing envelope and a stamp but I don't know for sure.
Once someone tells me how to ship them and if only two pods would be enough for you to start with, I'll send them to you.

PM me your mailing address.

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

You have dmail.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Good it looks like you are going to get your seeds. I was trying to figure out how to share mine because they are so small.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Tiger! I know this is O/T, but if there's any chance you're free next Saturday (the 24th), post on the MidAtlantic forum thread about Becky's swap and see if somebody isn't passing by close enough to offer you a ride. I don't have any sinningia babies, but could try to lure you with an alsobia stolon or a strep baby... :-)

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

ckecking now......Thank you! Will let you know! And you really know how to tempt me!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Heh... for that matter, we still need to fix you up with a bag of Chocolate Peppermint & Kentucky Colonel Spearmint!

OK... sorry to veer off topic... we'll continue this discussion over on Becky's swap thread in the MidAtlantic forum!

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

yes madam.

jsxtiger, I'm so sorry I missed you! I was reading through the thread as I was getting ready to leave for vacation and in my rush must have missed your post. If you haven't gotten seeds from someone else, send me a dmail with your address and I'll send you some. I sent out all the last ones I had, but looks like I've got a couple more pods ready to harvest.

Did I miss anyone else?

Anybody had any germination so far? ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I wish someone could show me pictures of how to collect seed from anything other than a strep. I can do that but I have no idea how to collect seed from sinningias.

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Mone all germinated. They have four tiny leaves each now. Now What??? Thank's! Lou
