Anyone want Sinningia pusilla seeds?

I just found Sinn. pusilla seeds I've had drying. Ideally, I would have offered them a month or so ago, but I think you'll still get a high enough germination rate that you'll have plenty of plants. I don't have a huge amount of them, because I always miss the pods and the seeds scatter before I collect them. LOL There should be enough for two or three people, though. Please post to this thread if you'd like them. :o)

is that the tiny little Sinningia? They're adorable! I'd love to try some seeds but probably wouldn't be able to sow them and really give them my attention until fall... do you think they'd keep in the fridge until then? If you're not sure, then somebody else should take them. :-)

Thanks for sharing them around!

Hi critter! It is the tiny little one. I'm not on my main computer right now, so I can't post a picture, but I posted one in the April What's Blooming thread, so you could see it there.

They'd keep in the fridge til fall. Some say germination rates drop quite a bit if they're stored for long, but I don't really know. I sow seeds no matter how old they are to at least give them a chance. ;o)

I have quite a few of these plants and they bloom all the time, so if you'd rather wait until fall when you're ready to sow them, I could send you fresh seeds then. Whichever you'd prefer is fine with me. :o)

Here's the link to S. pusilla in Plant Files in case any "Lurkers" want to see: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/142148/

I have this plant too from a teeny baby I got in trade from you last year Amy and it is one of my favorites! I had never grown a plant so teensy tiny before and Love it! My teeny ones are planted in little glass jars, one with a lid and the other I cover in saran wrap ... happily sitting under the lights on the plant stand!

I never thought I could keep a plant this small alive but it is a very easy one ... if it will grow for me, it will grow for anybody! ^_^

I was afraid of mine when I first got it! LOL I didn't pot it up for a day or two because I was scared to touch it for fear I'd smish it! I've come to find, though, that the micro Sinns are really some of the toughest plants I have and they bloom far more often than any of my other plants could even hope to.

Here's a link to the picture of the plant that produced the seeds I'm offering. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4741893

Yes! That's the one I was hoping it was... I got some sort of algae in with mine and didn't notice until the poor thing was nearly smothered. There's a speck of green yet, so it might come back... but I'd love to start some more of them, regardless! Mine has never made a seedpod, as far as I've seen.

Fresh seeds in fall would be great, too, and that would give somebody else a chance to try them now. I just know that with everything else on my gardening and propagation project lists, I'd better not add something else this spring, LOL.

Amy, thats so nice of you... I don't need any seeds.. I just had to comment on how gorgeous your photo of her is.A real blooming beauty for sure! : )

hi;
i would love to have some seed, i think that is the only micro i don't have.
mrsbonnie

critter, in my experience, and through some research I've done, I've found that S. pusilla always brings with it a very short layer of green moss. Virginie and George Elbert state in 'The Miracle Houseplants' that, "Almost invariably a very fine growth of moss surrounds the base of an S. pusilla plant." I've quit worrying about the green stuff. LOL I don't keep mine fully covered, either, so that helps to keep any algae down, as well. Don't give up on yours, though! It will probably sprout up soon! With any luck, by fall my 'White Sprite' will be blooming and producing seeds, too, so I can send some of both.

Thanks, Nancy! It's a true treasure! ^_^

mrsbonnie, I'd be happy to send you some seeds! Send me a dmail with your address, please.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm not giving up... but it's not a happy plant. I'm used to the mossy stuff, too, but this was algae... I think it may have been first too wet and then (as I tried to compensate) too dry. I'm embarrassed to admit it's nearly a goner, because as you said, it's really a tough little plant!

Aw, don't be embarrassed! Look at me and AVs! LOL Pull it out of the pot and see what's going on with it. If the tuber's still firm and there's a bit of a stem or leaves so you know the eye is still good, then I still think it will pull through. If it doesn't make it, I'll send you a plant and some seeds. :o)

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Do you have any seeds left?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I poked at it last week, and there does still seem to be a tuber there... and the tiniest bit of green... *crossing fingers*

Thanks, RG!

Hi Diane! Yep, still got seeds. Send me a dmail with your address and I'll send some to you. :o)

critter, keep us posted on how it does! :o)

Hi Lou how have you been. I don't think I have seen you for a while.

I will send addy.

I read a lot of the forums, just seldom post. I'm trying to be more outgoing and overcome my cybershyness, but I guess it is just my nature. Lou

I know they are tough plants when I don't kill them. Amy, I am going to run and take a quick pic to show you that yours are still alive which is a real feat for me.
These are the little bitty ones

Hi, are all of your seeds gone?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Would you like to try your hand at streptocarpus seeds I collected? They are from Iced Pink Flamingo................they have been in a sealed envelope for about 6 months.
Does anyone know if they stay viable that long??????? help.......Rain, Bonnie, Jannich, etc........critter?

(AnnaRuth) Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

gessiegail,, I don't know for whom that post was intended, but I'd love to have a few if you have them. I'm a newbie and am planting everything that's not tied down. If it wasn't intended for me, pls forgive....

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

No, it is for you.................dmail me and I can send you other seeds too for the garden.........

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've started strep seeds that were at least that old, Gail, but they'd been in the fridge in a sealed packet. I got some germination, but probably not what I'd have gotten if they'd been fresh. Still, if nobody sows them then they won't germinate for certain. :-)

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

they should still be fine, i don't always ref. mine, keep them on my desk in the plant room so i can sow when i think of it & they are all fine.
bonnie

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Bonnie, that's good to know. My only experience was with that one packet! :-)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, Critter and Bonnie!

By the way, Bonnie, I had given up on the sinnngia seeds but now I have babies, thanks to you and jan!

Charlotte, NC

So what's the trick to getting S. pusilla to make seed pods? I have the same one that I got from you (RainGazer) back around Sept. and except for one plant I started from a single leaf I put down, I have no babies. My plant flowers all the time and is still alive and kicking, and appears to be happy and healthy... what's the trick? Are you hand pollinating? Do I need to create some sort of draft to carry the pollen from one flower to the next? Release some bees in the house to help? Is there a "seed pod" god I need to dance for?

Also, do you have a close up shot of a pod? I'd love to see exactly what they look like. Who knows, maybe I've had seeds but just no luck with germination...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

If you come up with a successful seed pod formation dance (or even an unsuccessful one, LOL), we will require photos. ;-)

Lou, I do have enough for you. :o) Please dmail your address to me.

ginpan, let me see how many I have as I get the first three ready. If I have enough left, I'll certainly send you some. If not, I'll put you down for the next pod. :o)

MullettMan, there is no trick, they just self-seed. However, they need high humidity for the pod to ripen. Do you have yours covered to maintain the humidity? They don't need help pollinating themselves, but if you wanted to flick the flower gently or just shake the pot/glass, there's no reason you couldn't! ;o)

I'm not finding a good pod picture. Let me go see if there's a pod on it now I could snap a shot of...

ROFL See if there's a pod... There are 6. I put boxes around them in the picture. When the bloom dries up and falls off, don't cut that stalk off, just watch it, and usually it will form a pod. You have to watch it carefully toward the end, because it will spill before you realize it.

How did you put the boxes around the pods?

Hello. Please, I would appreciate seeds, if I am not too late. Thank you.

(Zone 1)

I just went and checked one of my S. pusilla and found all these little teensy seedling plantlets coming up in jar. I never saw the seedpods, will have to watch more closely from now on to see if I can catch some!

If I am not to late and if there are any seeds still floating around I would love to try to grow... Would send postage...

OK now that I know what the seed pods look like on the mini sinningias..next question..heres where I really need help..lol..how do you collect the seed??Also those seed pods look really tiny..are they easy to recognize in person or do you need to use a jewelers loop to see them well enough to work with them along with extremely steady hands?(that might foil my chances) I think I might have seeds....tried to get a pic but plants are in a deep jar and no way to get close enough picture to make it out. I would gladly share seeds but the trick for me is how do you harvest them??Amy???HELP!!!

Lin thats the neatest thing!! I can't get over all the sinn babies you have from just leaving nature take its course! I counted alot of little ones in there... Sooo Cute!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, how neat. I don't know how to harvest the seed either, Nancy!!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Well that makes me feel a little better Gail..Hopefully someone will tell us just what we need to do....

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I know that jannich and rain know how to to it...........we may have to wait for one of them..........look and laugh..........I was trying to take a picture for Susan of a violet when the whole top shelf started falling off onto the carpet!!!!!!!!!!!! I might as well laugh as cry.............now I have to wait until it is dry enough vacuum!

you can't see much in this picture as this is far away.......
