Do you have your lilies planted

Fenton, MO(Zone 6b)

I spent the day planting my lilies for the year. Glade thats Mostly done. Except the Orders From B&D and the Lily Nook. They always show up weeks after everyone else,s. I think I am going to stop ordering from both of them. My lilies are usually a foot high by the time they show , They don't get established before the Famous St. Louis heat kicks in.

Got all of my lilies in the ground from our society sale and my Faraway flowers are also nestled into their beds. Still have a couple to put in pots, but other than that I'm planted!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh my, any chance you could pick you order date? I know the Lily Nook starts shipping in early April. It's not enough time? Mine from the Lily Nook should come any day now.

You're better than I am Dennis. I could never give up those two sources. So much quality and variety. It's worth a phone call to them in regards to shipping dates, but that is just me.

Our ground is just beginning to thaw. I tried to dig in yesterday with a whole lot of trouble. The worms have just begun to move around in there. We are expecting warmth through the weekend, so hopefully my time is coming. I have a ton of work to do out there.

Hi
I meant on spring shipping. There fall shipping is fine. But people tend to think of St. Louis since it is in the Midwest as the same as some city in Minnesota. We do Not get winters like that. My Ground Seldom Freezes and if it does not very deep. The coldest Temperature I have had in 15 years is about 3+ and it only happens usually only once or twice a year and for a day or two then it warms back up . We do not get Snow cover it snows then It goes. We had a 11 inch snow fall this year and it was gone with in a week.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

As compared to our 100 plus inches this winter, some of which is still here. And most of which has stuck all winter long.

I'd give a call to them about shipping dates, especially to B&D, they have mild weather and start shipping in February and March. The Lily Nook might be under "cold constraints", as far as weather goes.

Fenton, MO(Zone 6b)

I did contact B&D and the Lily Nook.

He gave all kinds of reason why he could not ship . There just out of the freezer. Blah Blah Blah.He not Responsible if it freezes in transit Blah blah blah . Which as never happened to me since they send it express Mail (Air Mail/3 day max) . As i was writing I received My order from B& D With the accompanying Note This a is a Exact Quote " Had a guy work for nearly 3 hours to pull this together for you . All th Ot's were in the back as they went in first. Had to move 5000 pounds of bulbs. After Stacking everything backup he realized that he missed Owata and I told him to let it go. Will keep my fingers crossed that these make it for you in a thawed condition. Thank you for your Order. Bob

Apparently they have not shipped to anyone. I must be the first This Year . It will be my last spring order to B&D.
The Lily Nook order is in the mail. I understand why they ship Late There in the frozen North. Not in Coastal Washington.

The B&D thing is strange since the first choice to send is "Late March/Early April". The note seems like he kind of had an attitude about it, but it is always hard to tell in text messages. Regardless of whether he was whining or trying to impress you with how much work they put into it, I think the note was a poor choice.
The Lily Garden starts to ship late Feb.

Fenton, MO(Zone 6b)

The Lily Garden Ships year round. I had shipments in every month of winter.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I haven't planted any bulbs yet, they're all safely tucked away in the dungeon.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

I haven't even gotten any yet. LOL
That's ok I am busy scraping my house and dealing with other family matters.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL Dennis your posts were funny - because I totally believe that happened. I ordered from B&D for spring delivery this year (usually I only order/plant during the fall because like you and even moreso I cannot plant lilies much later than mid-April because of the heat and don't get good performance first year if I do). I did not get a confirmation email from them on my first order. Talked to Diana and she told me if I got an order number my order was confirmed. I asked about early shipping and she laughed and said "well you have about 500 orders in front of you". I was kind of annoyed by that remark. I called because three years ago I made an order, never received it, and found out they shipped it to another address by mistake in Massachusetts and it was never returned. Her attitude then was "oh well - sorry". Really! I continue to order from them because they do have a truly great product, but I can do without the"commentary" as well. I placed a second order this spring and they shipped both together, and fantastic bulbs with generous substitutions and some freebies. I guess I can overlook the snottiness since the return is great. I ordered my Lily Garden order via snail-mail later and actually received it sooner in late March. I had to avoid Faraway this spring as they ship too late for me to plant. Maybe this fall!

Gosh I should have proofread that! LOL

Yes Steve
It cracks me up too. (LOL) They get a few of the newer Dutch hybrids before any one else. Thats the only reason I will order from them. The lily Pad is Cheaper and there happy to have you business. I am Going to cool off for a couple of days and then I might have to give them a negative on Garden Watch Dog.

LOL you are too funny. I do agree it is annoying when businesses act as if they are doing you a favor by allowing you to buy their product!

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

Especially at 10-60 a bulb!

Fenton, MO(Zone 6b)

I spent $150 and did not get any Bonus LOL. He teaching me a lesson to have the Audacity to ask for a order that I placed months ago and they charged my credit card at the time. I think I placed the order in January (-:

When were they going to ship, before you bugged them ;*)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Can I tell you?..... I can only imagine what B&D's cooler must look like. I have heard similar cooler remarks and I know B (Bob) is the muscles in the group and it sounds like a whole lot of work to get all of those bulbs moved.

If you ordered from the catalog (mail order), you got 10% off instead of the bonus. I think if you ordered on the web, you may have gotten a lily bonus, depending on your order total.

I still like them. If I got a note like in my lily box, I would politely call them on it (even if I was ticked off ;). Maybe because I just can't keep quiet when it comes to stuff like that.

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Magnolia...100 inches!!!. We were way below normal and only got 41 inches all winter, the bulk of which is gone...people imagine we have 100 inches on the ground here all year round...LOL

Steve...I've been in communication with Ramona at Faraway and she is probably going to do an early ship next spring. I start mine earlier indoors and successfully received a few from her as an early-shipment test. They arrived around March 19. I have a p.o. box so can receive earlier shipments up here than if they were sitting outdoors in a mailbox, but that shouldn't be an issue for you. Her original spring ship date was too late for me and I can't plant them in the fall. She said the earlier ship date may work for a lot of people...Like us, from AK to TX!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the information, Chocolatemoose! I will keep that in mind for ordering next spring. I really want some of the Japanese hybrids. If I could get them mid-March as you did in your test that would be perfect.

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

Since I am enlarging and redoing my island, I haven't planted my new lilies yet. I bought some more Casablancas and Sorbonnes that I want to add to the bed. I won't really have room for them until May, after I divide and move the perenials that are already there. Should I start the lillies in pots instead or just wait until the bed is ready?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Do you think the bed would be ready at the first part of May or the end?

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

Probably around mid May.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I imagine your established lilies are popping up already? If your new bulbs are doing OK and not sprouting then you could hold off a bit longer. I'd probably go ahead and pot them before too long. My experience with planting late (for my season) is that they're very, very stunted.

Perhaps others will voice their recommendations on the matter ~

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

The older lilies have shot up really fast, and they've multiplied!. Even the casa blancas that I moved this fall have multiplied! I was worried that they wouldn't make it. I think I'll either pot these or put them another bed.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

I agree with Moby. I am sure you can plant later than I can, but lilies need the cool soil to root well and establish and if not even planted until mid-late may in 6b I would think that might be pushing it. I'd put them in pots now and then transplant later into the ground.

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

If I order bulbs for spring planting mine usually don't get planted until mid-May (zone 4). The first year they are usually shorter but do bloom. The second year they are back on a normal schedule.

Tomah, WI

Stupid question_ You can plant lily bulbs in the Spring? I thought only in the Fall. But then, I'm just learning!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Either way is fine. There tends to be more available to plant in the spring. I think personally the fall planted ones settle in better before they get going the next spring. That's just me. Both do fine though really.

Tomah, WI

Where do you get bulbs in the Spring?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

My favorite vendors are mailorder. Many of these (not all) lilies are grown in the USA by lily growers in the northwest. They include guarantee of the bulb you receive that it will be what you ordered, not something else otherwise it will be replaced.

Places I buy from in spring include
Faraway Flowers
B&D Lilies
Pacific Northwest Lily Society (must have membership in order to enjoy twice a year sales)
The Lily Garden

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks
so much!!! I just had to check out the infamous B&D. Against better judgement (how am I going to hide this from Hubby) I ordered $100 of lillies. Well they're white and I have a white garden and w-e-l-l you know the empty spots and full sun and... Oh please come up with more excuses for me. Uh... I have to work outside you know the seasonal depression Oh! and if I work with Malki (our daughter) its good for her because... Oh G-d guys get me out of this one. No! I will not cancel the order I WANT them.

See Malki loves to garden. She's been pruning this Clematis Paniculata every spring since she was 3. I wish she'd kill it!

What a sweetie! Yes, you have to keep your daughter happy, the lilies are a necessity!

lilyfan

Yeah! that's right. He'll do anything for her. Yeah, you know she has developed this strong interest in gardening, and well you know with her hearing and working together with her I am improving her vocabulary....
You know if I really work at it I might even be able to work them into a tax deduction for medical purposes. I already am able to deduct the gas for driving my son back and forth from school, an I already can deduct alot of their games and toys. Yeah, this just might work.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Oh yeah, I can just see a reenactment out in the garden, a la Annie Sullivan ~

L-I-L-Y ..... LILY!
S-H-O-V-E-L.... SHOVEL!
B-U-N-N-Y.... SHOOT!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Glad to be of assistance :-)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

You are improving her and your physical and mental health by working in the gardens. Dirt therapy is the best therapy around. Who knows, she might become a great lily hybridizer some day. :)
