I agree! The petal shape is what really catches my eye! Very, very nice bloom, dobra1629!

Mesilla Park, NM

I grew this one last year, dont' remember if the seeds were tan or black.. gotta check my notes. Were your seeds black? It is not the same shape, but they have that point I like.

Gourd, I really like that one too. My seeds are black.

except one tan one (?) .... That's a perfect bloom dobra.

wow! Beautiful!

Lake, MI

I just sowed the blue Picotee seed three days ago and they are up today. I sure hope I didn't get them going to soon:(

They are truly beautiful

Amos

Mesilla Park, NM

You know, I checked on mine and the seeds were tan on this one..

amos, just make sure that they don't get wet and cold, keep them protected as long as you can before they go outside. I've lost a couple of them already, I think it was the potting soil I used this year...it may have had some bacteria in it.

Unbelievably beautiful!

Was your blue picotee slow to bloom?

Houma, LA

This one was one of my earliest to bloom.

Dorothy

Mesilla Park, NM

Dorothy, did you get any seeds off this one.. and would you like to trade a couple.. .

some of the seeds from mine came out black this year, I planted the tan..

New Castle, IN

I planted blue picotee and the vines are 8-9ft tall and no blooms yet. I can't stand it!!!

Stewart, TN

I've never seen mg's with the shaped edges! Here in Middle TN we don't get out much. Would they do well in zone 6-7?

New Castle, IN

Mine are clear up above the porch roof and still no blooms!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Trying to get an ID on this MG I have. Looks similar to some of the above. The leaves are sure different from the usual MG.

Can anyone help me?????

Thanks, Gita

Here's another shot--seems I have 2 different ones mixed in this pot......OR--is it the same variety--just different colors.

I got the seeds last year from "Happy".....She has many, many MG's!

Then--I also have this one. Thought it was "Blue Rocket"?????????
Is it? If not--what is the name?

Thanks.....Gita

Hi Gitagal -

This is an Ipomoea nil type known accurately as a Kikyo (i.e., Romaji for bell flower which is star shaped) , although more commonly inaccurately labeled and called simply a 'picotee'
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/Gitagal_1220217104_966.jpg
looks like a single pink and a single purple kikyo here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/Gitagal_1220217220_51.jpg

the kikyo come in single and double forms, usually with a picotee edge and in a variety of colors ranging from white through pinks, reds, blues and purples...

This Ipomoea purpurea here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5491602
likely started out as a Grandpa Ott's and developed the progressive dilution to form the nice lighter star pattern seen around the throat...

Hope that helps...

Ron,

Thanks a lot! Of course it helps---especially since i am collecting seeds for future swapping.

I have had a Grandpa Otts now for 2 years. Of course--the bloom is beautiful, but it is way too aggressive for my limited bed spaces. Had too many volunteers also----It was hard to tell them from my 4 O'clocks "Broken Colors" as the seedlings look very similar.

Mt Grandpa Otts is, once again, climbing my house and is now twining around the downspout by the second floor. I think I may just cut the stem at the bottom. I do not feel like having all the seeds fall into my bed again. Besides--It may be choking out my "Multi Blue" Clematis that it is growing next to.....I'd rather have the Clematis.....
It also intertwined in all the stems of the Rose bush and the Azalea next to it.....
I am starting to hate MG's!!!!!!

Here's the Grandpa!

And--the top part of it.....Sure looks pretty......

Hi Gita - The Ipomoea purpurea are known to usually be prolific seed producers...

Perhaps some other Morning Glories that do not produce as many seeds would be better suited to your situation or MG's that produce seeds that are not very cold hardy ...

The Ipomoea nil
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=Ipomoea&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=nil&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=cultivar&images_prefs=with&Search=Search
are not as prolific re-seeders as the I.purpurea

Ipomoea tricolor
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=Ipomoea&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=tricolor&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=cultivar&images_prefs=with&Search=Search
are rarely troublesome as re-seeders...

Ipomoea indica
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/54966/
is usually too clonal to produce many seeds

Ipomoea pandurata
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/207097/
is a US native species that is rarely ever troublesome to gardeners

Ipomoea platensis
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/160923/
is usually grown in a container and the large root overwintered indoors

Merremia dissecta
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/87166/
will not self resow except in the hotter states

The species linked to above may work out well in your climate zone..

What does TTY stand for?

Gita

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Transgenetic topographical yureka...(!)

P.S. - aka as talk to you...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ron--you are making me blush......You mean talking to me gives you the long version of TTY?

WOW! ...But---We've only JUST met! ...:o)

Of course--the TTY meaning "talk to you" is not as exciting.....Bah! Humbug! But--it IS nice to talk to you...

Gita...:-]

Hey Gita -

Well,you 'got me there'...

I usually just say the first thoughts that pop into my head whenever somebody asks what those letters mean...something with a nice rhythmic flow to it...like an instant tarot card reading and with multiple possible interpretations...

Interesting word association...

My mind tends to think in analogies...and although philosophical 'flexible', nonetheless strictly Platonic as regards my interactions with the members of the Gardening forums...except when it comes to tinkering with the plants (!) genetics...

Everything is a Rorschach...

The yureka is possibly a 'spiritual' place in being...maybe like as alluded to in the
Beachboys song "Good Vibrations"

"I don't know 'where', but 'she' gets me 'there'..."

The 'where', 'she' and the 'there' could be any electrical impulses that happen to be cavorting about my brain at any given moment... any attempt to impart a definite stationary particular form to them would be as a transient fleur de lis...

Could be the solar wind tickling the petrocks in my head...

Perhaps a figment of my own imagination...it's an experience though...(!)

TTY,...

Ron

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ron,

You sure have some vocabulary! No biggie.....I understood all of it--even what you meant....

Eureka! G.
