We just went to pick up my new baby chickens today. They are sooooo cute. They are White Leghorns and Light Brahmas. This Friday I will get more Buff Orpingtons, Black Jersey Giants and RIRs. Any advise?
Thanks,

New babies today!
Congratulations!

No advice, just congratulations.
Congrats on the new babies.
Congratualations! Only advice I've heard is to watch and make sure the Orpingtons and Brahmas aren't picked on by the other breeds. They're big birds, but they are so non-aggressive that the other breeds may start to bully them.
Congrats! I have never had any of those breeds, others that have had them can surely give you advice. They are beautiful chickies!
congratulation be careful with the jerseys they are a lot bigger than the normal breeds and they will tend to pick on the smaller ones
lol indeed how long did it take to establish a pecking order tamara
i think it is because they hatched together that they never considered a difference. certainly may not be the case when they are older. but actuaally the buckeyes and jersey crosses should be nearly as big as far as the hens go.
wasn't sure you could tell the difference in the brooder, since they are mostly black and the backsplash is black too...
i didn't have a problem with my BA and JG pullets and hens integrating with my Buckeye hens. but they were kept separte where they could see each other fo ra while...
the roosters are a different story. twice the JG roo has gotten out. the second time i coudln't find my Best Buckeye anywhere. got Jaco the Giant put up and searched hi and low and called him by name. he finally called back from in the high brush. Buckeye's are big, but Giant roos, even not full grown, are well GIANT!
;-)
nine day old JG
i guess thats were they get the name from lol how long have you had jerseys for are they hard to handle do you need a big pen sorry for all the question but i am considering getting some
we just got these a few months ago. they were already "raised", so they aren't pets [but their babies will be!]. But they are not skittish and lay VERY well. The roo is a good guy, just very protective. I have to remind him those are MY hens and therefore MY eggs... i carry a heavy fishing net when i go in his pen. The hens free range, since they are smaller they can get out a small fence opening and get out with all the other chickens. Jaco the Giant is actually my seven year olds replacement bird from when he lost his litte Black Cornish Bantam roo last fall. He wanted somethings still black but BIG. So whenever he wants to hol dJaco, i jsut go in and catch him, and he sits and holds him. i will see if i have a picture.
We really like this breed and are looking forward to having more for egg rpoducers, meat birds, and to show at the fair.
We have four black Aussie pullets that we are crossing with Jaco. So you sure might like this American to cross with your native birds!
yes i think iwould hey what do ya reckon a silkie gross jersey would look lik do you think it would be able to with height differences because that would be one intrestin lookin chickin
well, if you are gomma cross a silk, i can think of better ones. but i guess you could end up with something like a giany cochin? hmmm, JapXAmer=Asiatic? what color eggs would thy be?
light brown ima thinkin
As chicks, I would recommend gradually raising up the
feed and water to match their height. The sooner you can
get it up, but not too far for them to reach it, the cleaner
it will stay. Dirty food and water was a pet peeve of mine,
and I was always coming up with ways to raise it, and for them
not to be able to tip the feed over.
I hope you enjoy your new chickens, Chicknlover!
great idea! i use upside down pots or pans to raise it. you can also use bricks or wood blocks...
wood chips in water doesn't work well LOL
we would like to see your new chickens!
