Every year (late winter early spring) I cut back my smoke bush to the ground to promote darker foliage and upright
growth --coppicing. If I do not cut back the smoke bush this year will it flower (plants do not flower if they are cut back in this manner) and can I go back to cutting it severely the following year without causing any damage?
Smoke bush Cotinus coggygria
One source I found states that coppicing works best on shrubs that bloom on new wood, but this link says you can coppice after the shrub blooms.
