Now that's interesting. Snuck onto the island in a car, perhaps.
Sneaky is right. I just hate to kill things. If only I could let the cats out, then they would do my dirty work.
So do think it's probably the voles that have eaten Heidi's Astilbe?
To Pull or Not to Pull, That is the question
I don't know if voles would eat Astilbe, or if they climb gallon size pots. They are different than mice, but similar (the tail is much shorter). My voles tend to feast on small vegetable starts planted out, as well as squash and pumpkins when they are ripening, and artichoke roots. They don't like to be out in the open, although their tunnels are sometimes no more than furrows in the ground. If you put out an apple half or piece of squash near the pots and get rodent-like gnaw marks, its time to set traps if that's something you do. If you catch something, then you will know what you are dealing with.
That's what mine look like after the deer eat them!
Can you see the one with the leaves and then the others are eaten. The deer have to walk into the middle of the nursery and reach over some hydrangeas and kind of under a table. I know we do have deers but this is weird. their are a lot of other things to eat in my garden.
I will keep my eyes open for the buggers. Thanks Heidi
Heidi when out and double check mine all is well, wonder what it could be? a Weevil, Caterpillar?
MHF, I have the cure for Voles, 4 cats, they always bring them to me, and say 'look moma, I brought you a present' LOL
My deer are kind of indiscriminate - I could see them eating one and leaving another, especially if they were on the lookout for humans. That looks like what my heuchera looks like much of he time.
I don't think voles would completely mow down a plant. They're nibblers . . but then I'm just guessing.
Frustrating!!
I think its a bug, I have some eating one Rhody and not the other thats 4' away and nothing else, go figure. LOL
Bugs and voles would not eat that much that quickly. If they can get in, deer can do weird things and they like Astillbe.
MMMMMMMMMM
